Carson refinery fire will likely fuel price hikes at gas pump

The Marathon Petroleum refinery looms in the background behind a Shell and Chevron gas station in Carson on Monday, Mar. 18, 2019. Gas prices will probably rise following the fire at the nearby Phillips 66 refinery on Friday. (Photo by Scott Varley, Daily Breeze/SCNG) A partial shutdown of the Phillips 66 refinery in Carson — when combined with temporary closures of two other facilities on the West Coast — began driving up pump prices Monday in Southern California, according to oil industry e...

Beverly Hills man sentenced to 14 years in prison for embezzling $2.4 million from El Segundo company

A Beverly Hills man was sentenced last week to more than 14 years in state prison after pleading no contest to charges he embezzled $2.4 million from an El Segundo company. Adam Reed Zucker, 42, pleaded no contest to 35 felony counts, including grand theft by embezzlement, money laundering and filing a false income tax return, on Aug. 27, prosecutors said. He was sentenced Friday, March 15 by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Jose Sandoval. Zucker was the vice president for sports licensing at Ar...

With South Bay Lakers, NBA vet Spencer Hawes wants to prove he won’t quit

During his one campaign with the Clippers four years ago, Spencer Hawes found the place that he now calls his second home: the South Bay. The 7-foot-1 center and Seattle native was smitten with the sunshine and laid back vibe – enough so that he bought a multimillion-dollar property in Manhattan Beach. It’s tempting to imagine the cushy transition for Hawes, who has been working out in Seattle since he last played NBA ball in 2017, returning to his posh beach house in Southern California as he e...

The Method Fest film festival is returning after 9 years away

After being dormant for most of the decade, The Method Fest Independent Film Festival returns to Southern California, from March 22-28. Centered at Laemmle’s Ahrya Fine Arts Theatre in Beverly Hills, the 13th edition of the film festival that focuses on acting performances opens Friday night with “Stockholm” starring Ethan Hawke and Noomi Rapace, a comic/dramatic recreation of the 1970s hostage situation that inspired the term Stockholm Syndrome. Around two dozen features and loads of shorts wil...

Kurtis MacDermid brings fists, energy to Kings

EL SEGUNDO – There aren’t as many fights in the NHL as there once were, but that doesn’t mean big, tough guys like Kurtis MacDermid are obsolete. Not at all. The 6-foot-5, 233-pound Kings defenseman dropped the gloves with defenseman Josh Brown of Florida in the second period of the Kings’ 4-3 loss on Saturday afternoon at Staples Center. MacDermid seemed to be almost enjoying himself as he put Brown on the ice at the end of the scrap. MacDermid wouldn’t quite go that far, but … “I wouldn’t say ...

Whicker: Young Kings are the rulers of 12-year-old hockey

EL SEGUNDO — The 12-year-old Junior Kings came to the Tournoi International Hockey de Pee Wee de Quebec last month. The best part was leaving with the trophy. The worst part was leaving. “The whole city opens up to these kids,” said Brett Beebe, the head coach, as he sat on a bench overlooking the ice at Toyota Sports Center. “They roll out the red carpet. The parents don’t have to go. The families play host to two or three kids from each team. The kids learn a little French, they get immersed i...

Reel in tasty seafood at San Pedro Fish Market, Pier 76 Fish Grill

The original San Pedro Fish Market is indeed in San Pedro, is indeed a fish market, and does indeed seat 3,000 fish lovers at any given time. They hold the Guinness Book of World Records title for serving the most seafood, during their annual Lobster Festival. They’re an icon, one of those Los Angeles destinations that, like the Original Farmers Market, every Angeleno should visit. San Pedro Fish Market Grille, which has four locations including Harbor City, serves a variety of seafood dishe...

Kings defenseman Paul LaDue knows consistency is needed

EL SEGUNDO — Kings defenseman Paul LaDue has shown promise. But like the rest of his team, he’d never write home about the season he’s had. LaDue, 26, had gotten into just 27 of the team’s 69 games ahead of Thursday’s against Nashville at Staples Center. He’s missed nine games because of injury, but he’s also had 33 healthy scratches. That’s not what LaDue had in mind at the outset, but it’s the way things have gone. To him, the remedy is obvious. “I’d say just consistency – defending well every...

Kings captain Anze Kopitar sings Carl Grundstrom’s praises

EL SEGUNDO — Immediate reviews on Kings young forward Carl Grundstrom are in, and they are good. Not just because he is only the second player in franchise history to score goals in his first two NHL games, either. Grundstrom turned the trick when he scored in Saturday’s 4-2 loss at Arizona and Sunday’s 3-2 victory at Anaheim. To team captain Anze Kopitar, the 21-year-old from Sweden has been impressive. “Well, he’s certainly made an impact on our team and he had his name all over the two games ...

Lakers sign NBA G League veteran Andre Ingram to 10-day contract

EL SEGUNDO – In a Chicago airport lobby, Coby Karl put the phone on speaker, and Andre Ingram leaned in to listen. The gray hairs that grace the oldest player on the South Bay Lakers sometimes make Ingram look even older than he actually is. But a flush of youth came to his face when SBL general manager Nick Mazzella told him the Lakers would sign him to a 10-day contract later that day. As his grin spread, teammates mobbed around him and cheered, in a video released by the team. Andre Ingram i...

Lakers signing NBA G League veteran Andre Ingram to 10-day contract

EL SEGUNDO – In need of depth and maybe just something to feel good about, the Lakers are signing 33-year-old Andre Ingram to a 10-day contract. It’s the second time the Lakers have brought in Ingram, an 11-year veteran of the NBA G League, on a 10-day deal. Ingram has spent the early part of the season with the South Bay Lakers, and will meet the Lakers at their first stop of their upcoming five-game road trip in Chicago once his deal is finalized. Last spring, when he played his NBA debut afte...

LeBron James to have minutes reduced, while Lakers cast doubt on Lonzo Ball’s return

EL SEGUNDO — The rollback has officially begun. The Lakers (30-35) have stopped realistically shooting for the playoffs, and with that shift comes changes: LeBron James will officially have his minutes “monitored,” as the franchise’s goal becomes preserving the 34-year-old’s health for next season. Coach Luke Walton acknowledged after Friday’s practice that he had a conversation with James, who has not missed the postseason in 14 years, described as “pretty open and easy” about keeping his minut...

Quick study Jack Campbell showing Kings, others he’s ready in net

EL SEGUNDO — Going by the numbers, it seems Jack Campbell has proved he can be a No. 1 goalie in the NHL. But he plays on a Kings team that has Jonathan Quick, and Quick is signed through 2022-23. Then again, Campbell, 27, will become an unrestricted free agent after next season. He was asked after practice Friday about the possibility of signing with another team so he can fulfill his dream of being the top dog on a team. A friendly sort, Campbell was obviously uncomfortable with the inquiry. “...

Kings’ Alec Martinez: Poor season a ‘humbling reminder’

EL SEGUNDO — Alec Martinez is in his 10th season playing defense for the Kings. There have been ups and downs, but far more ups, as he was part of the Kings’ 2012 and 2014 Stanley Cup title teams. Still, he said he’s never been through anything like what’s happening this season. With only 56 points with 16 games left to play, not only will the Kings (24-34-8) almost certainly miss the playoffs for the third time in five seasons since winning the Cup for the second time, they will finish with the...

Lakers, after crushing loss to Clippers and more injuries, attempt to regroup

EL SEGUNDO — The first day of the rest of the Lakers’ season was quiet at the team’s practice facility, as the team attempted to heal its aching bodies. LeBron James, Rajon Rondo and Josh Hart went to a film session but did not practice on the court. Kyle Kuzma, who rolled his ankle during Monday night’s loss to the Clippers, received treatment. Brandon Ingram, Tyson Chandler and Lance Stephenson – all of whom missed the matchup with the Clippers – didn’t practice either. Coach Luke Walton had j...

Kings’ Drew Doughty: ‘It’s been a (expletive) season’

EL SEGUNDO >> It’s been a season the Kings would love to forget. But it might be better if it remains etched in their minds so they’ll never forget what it’s like to be a last-place team. With 17 games left ahead of Tuesday’s game against visiting Montreal, the Kings (24-33-8, 56 points) bring up the rear in the Pacific Division, as well as the Western Conference. Barring a miracle, they will miss the playoffs for the third time in five seasons since winning their second Stanley Cup title in 201...

Kings’ Brendan Leipsic setting table for new contract

EL SEGUNDO — Brendan Leipsic is on his third team since the 2017-18 season, so it’s understandable why the 24-year-old forward is doing all he can to make sure he sticks with the Kings past this season. Need a net-front presence? He did that Thursday when he deflected in a hard shot by teammate Drew Doughty during the Kings’ 4-3 overtime loss to Dallas. Leipsic is also a fast-skating, hard-working, skilled playmaker. According to interim coach Willie Desjardins, he’s only gotten better since the...

Upland mother charged with assault on child causing death after 6-month-old dies

A 25-year-old Upland mother was charged Thursday, Feb. 28, with assault on a child causing death in the skull-fracture fatality of her 6-month-old daughter, found inside her apartment after police were called to the complex when she hurled her 19-month-old son from a second-floor landing. Tierra Rose Ortega, who leaped from the same spot where neighbors said she threw her son Tuesday morning, also was charged with attempted murder by the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office. Authorities on Tuesday filed a murder charge against a man accused of fatally stabbing his wife in their North Hollywood apartment over the weekend. Nick Vedol Lopez, who is also known by the moniker Cheto, was covered in blood when police said they arrested him in Azusa after he walked off of the 210 Freeway. 19 horses died at Santa Anita in past 2 months, rain suspected as a cause

Santa Anita Park has closed its main track for another day to give equine investigators time to determine whether heavy rains compromised its racing surfaces and led to the death of 19 horses in the past two months. Of the 19 deaths, 14 sustained fatal injuries while either racing or training on the dirt track at the legendary Arcadia facility, according to Mike Marten, a spokesman for the California Horse Racing Board. “The principle focus is on the track where the 14 deaths occurred,” Marten s...

Culver City police study where to search for potential remains of infant in landfill near Corona

A Culver City couple suspected of killing their infant son and tossing his body in a trash bin remained jailed Tuesday awaiting a possible murder charge, while police studied where to resume a search in a massive landfill near Corona in hopes of finding the child’s remains. Investigators on Monday began searching the El Sobrante Landfill in Corona for the remains of 6-month-old Jacsun Manson, but were unable to find any sign of the infant, Culver City police Capt. Jason Sims said. Jacsun’s par...

Week 12 of our RV Road Trip: Learning to Love Los Angeles

Sometimes you have to visit a place a second or third time before you can appreciate it. I think it’s because we change so much. Through those changes we see the world through eyes that have different values and interests. My opinion of Los Angeles has always been that it’s overrated. If I HAVE to pass through here, I head straight for the South Bay Beaches of Manhattan Beach and Hemosa Beach as I have had a liking for the local feel down there. But the rest of LA, no thanks! Manhattan Beach, ...
