China’s Tesla wannabe Xpeng starts ride-hailing service

There’re a lot of synergies between electric vehicles and ride-hailing. Drivers are able to save more steering an EV compared to a gas vehicle. Environmentally conscious consumers will choose to hire an electric car. And EVs are designed with better compatibility with autonomous driving, which is expected to hit the public road in the coming decades. Indeed, Tesla is eyeing to launch its first robotaxis in 2020 as part of a broader ride-sharing scheme. Over in China where Tesla has a few disc...

The Birò O2 is the only car to be made from more than 80% recycled plastic

Apparently, in just 31 years, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. It’s an incredibly scary statistic, given how many fish exist in the sea. The car company Estrima is all poised to do something about this horrible future prediction by reclaiming some plastic and using it as raw material. The Birò O2, a special variant of Estrima’s electric-scooter is, for the first time ever in automotive history, made from more than 80% recycled plastic. The Birò O2 is a variant of Estrima’s origi...

This is what self-driving cars would look like in an alternate reality

Taking a page from the dystopian future presented to us by the minds at Pixar through the 2008 animated hit Wall-E, Alexander Zhukovsky asked himself why electric cars look like… cars. Why don’t they look like Segways, hoverboards, or motorized wheelchairs, products that are, in theory, exactly the same hardware packaged differently. Zhukovsky’s vision for self-driving EVs are autonomous single-seaters that elegantly travel around cities and neighborhoods, on four wheels. Fashioned to look quite...

Tesla first-quarter deliveries drop on challenges shipping Model 3 overseas

Tesla delivered 63,000 of its electric vehicles in the first quarter of the year, nearly a one-third drop from the previous quarter, the company reported late Wednesday. Tesla cautioned that it expects first-quarter profits to be negatively impacted by lower than expected delivery volumes and several pricing adjustments. Deliveries included about 50,900 Model 3 vehicles and 12,100 Model S and X SUVs. Tesla said despite the challenges that it “ended the quarter with sufficient cash on hand.” Tesl...

Schneider’s EVLink car charging stations were easily hackable, thanks to a hardcoded password

Schneider has fixed three vulnerabilities in one of its popular electric car charging stations, which security researchers said could have easily allowed an attacker to remotely take over the unit. At its worst, an attacker can force a plugged-in vehicle to stop charging, rendering it useless in a “denial-of-service state,” an attack favored by some threat actors as it’s an effective way of forcing something to stop working. The bugs were fixed with a software update that rolled out on September...
