Comment on seven-layer cookies by Elise Leddy

Hi! I got this recipe from the newspaper. My husband cut it out for me from Newsday, and there is no year or date but it’s been in my book of recipes for a LONG time. We live on Long Island, and my son’s favorite cookie in the world is this one. I never made them until about 10 years ago, but by then he had moved to California for his job, so I send them every year for his birthday, because he can’t get them out west. You are right- there are no cookies out there like these: even the bakeries in...

Comment on toasted coconut shortbread by Elise

Hi! These are SO GOOD!! I am making them for the third time in as many weeks (with much restraint, because I find that I am eating them every time I pass thru the kitchen, lol). This unassuming yet stellar little cookie has stolen the hearts of coworkers and finicky family alike! Question: can I freeze the dough? I was in a hurry to bake them the first time I made them, and ended up making two rolls out of them and doing the slice-and -bake thing, with great results. I doubled the recipe today...

Comment on st. louis gooey butter cake by Elise

This looks SO good! I bake every Saturday to take with me to work. I have to be in by 11 ( or so) but REALLY want to make this. How is is the day after baking? Should it be served warm? Can I make the yeast dough the night before and let it sit in the baking dish in the fridge, then bring to room temp the next morning before putting on the gooey topping and baking? I could make it in the morning before I go in…but I wouldn’t make it there until afternoon, lol. Thoughts? Thanks -Elise

Spotted on Instagram: fanciful ceramics by Elise Lefebvre, made in her workshop in Limoges, France, and only available sporadically as Elise releases them on her website (follow @eliseceramique for alerts). “Each piece is unique, like a fragment of painting, the memory of a gesture,” she writes on her site; “also you will perceive the nuances and the variations while discovering the piece in your hands.” The earthenware pieces are also microwave- and dishwasher-safe. Here’s a look at the individ...

Grove Music’s 2021 spoof article contest is now open!

Comment on marbled banana bread by Elise

I had a bunch of bananas waiting to be turned into banana bread when I saw this posted on Instagram. I knew it was meant to be. I was a little skeptical that the swirl wouldn’t be very visible because my regular banana bread usually turns out really dark. It’s beautiful! I doubled the recipe and made little marbled muffins also.

Comment on apple pie by Rachel P

In reply to Elise. Delicious! I had a few issues with over-browning the crust (thanks only to my particular oven), but other than that, I love this pie! I used a crust shield and foil over parts of the pie, after the first stage of baking, in order to curb browning. I also used mostly Granny Smith apples, and I think in this case, the lemon ingredients are a bit too much, and I would reduce then next time. Otherwise, it’s a great recipe!

Comment on roasted pear and chocolate chunk scones by Elise

This is the first SK recipe that hasn’t worked for me. I used a scale for ingredients, used only 2 pears, and the dough was so wet it was like cake batter. I added in at least 60g of flour and had a consistency that I could at least use as drop scones. Next time I’d add the butter first and fold in the pears with the chocolate so they don’t get so beaten up and make the dough even wetter.
