CS Interview: Phillipa Soo Talks Hamilton & Playing Leading Lady Eliza The stages of Broadway remain quiet in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis that has seen the shutters come down on all shows since March 12, and it will stay that way through the end of the year according to The Broadway League. Even before the shut-down, though, seeing Hamilton was out of reach for many of its fans. PB = PB || {}; PB.gptStandAlone = PB.gptStandAlone || {}; PB.gptAutoRef...

‘Hamilton’ Review: Filmed Version of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Musical is Somehow Both Miraculous and Slightly Underwhelming

Lin-Manuel Miranda‘s hip-hop musical Hamilton is an unqualified masterpiece: a once-in-a-generation combination of brilliant writing, indelible performances, and spectacular music that became a genuine pop culture phenomenon and crossed over into the mainstream. So it feels strange to say that director Thomas Kail‘s filmed version of Hamilton, which was shot with the original cast at the height of the show’s fame in 2016 and which debuts on Disney+ this Friday, left me slightly underwhelmed. As...

New ‘Hamilton’ Clip Will Leave You Incredibly “Satisfied”

We’ll never be satisfied until we see Hamilton in its entirety on Disney+ on July 3. But a new clip of one of its most beloved songs might help ease the tension a little. Disney+ has released a new Hamilton clip that shows a snippet of the iconic “Satisfied” number, performed by Renée Elise Goldsberry. Watch the new Hamilton clip below. Hamilton Clip Every great musical needs one great song about unrequited love, and Hamilton delivers in spades with “Satisfied,” one of the most popular ...

Comment on simple, essential bolognese by Eliza

I made this last night and it turns out I prefer my bolognese more unctuous and less tomato forward so I added more whole milk along with the pasta water. Parmesan also helped but next time I will halve the tomato paste or try another recipe. I also added a parsnip because I had one and I take every opportunity to sneak vegetables into meat dishes. I did like using the food processor to chop (why do I always forget I have one?) so taking that step with me. My husband liked the original sauce b...

Comment on almond rhubarb picnic bars by Eliza

Delicious! But not pretty. They didnt slice cleanly and our rhubarb is mostly green… and making a pattern was just a bit too tedious. I would definitely make again but I dont think I’ll be bringing them anywhere.

Your AI Chatbot Therapist Isn’t Sure What It’s Doing

In 1966, Joseph Weizenbaum created Eliza, the first psychotherapy chatbot. Eliza’s programming was relatively simple: Engage the user by detecting keywords in their statements and reflect this information back at them as an open-ended prompt. (A user might say “I’m sad,” to which Eliza could respond, “I’m sorry to…Read more...

Comment on mom’s apple cake by Eliza

I have made this before and loved it so I thought i would try it again with rhubarb. I mixed the rhubarb with a little sugar and I used almond extract instead of vanilla. I thought it was really good but not as good as it is with apples. I might try it again with a rhubarb apple mix. Oh, I halved the recipe and it fit perfectly in a loaf pan.

Comment on mushroom crêpe cake by Eliza

I was so intimidated by this and it was actually easy… and it was so insanely delicious! I used our own mozzarella with just a slice of a smoked cheddar to get the smoke flavor. I made the mushroom mixture and crepes yesterday and just heated everything and assembled in the morning. It made for a most perfect brunch. Big thanks!

Comment on strawberry rhubarb soda syrup by Eliza

I made this with just rhubarb and it was awesome! We had it in our mimosas for Mother’s Day. It is a heavier liquid so it kind of sinks to the bottom which looked really pretty. I was also surprised that it was a beautiful pink color.

"Tengujo can be made so thin that, at a certain point, it is too insubstantial for even the most gentle, decorative uses."

"At the width of a couple of kozo fibers, the paper becomes as thin as the wings of a mayfly. Only one use remains then: paper conservation. Trying to aggressively mend a document is risky because long-term chemical and physical effects are highly variable and relatively unknown. 'The more and more I am in this field, I feel that I should do less and less,' Ms. Choi said. So, as far as reinforcement material goes, the thinner the better.... The width of this thinnest tengujo is the same as the d...

Comment on layered yogurt flatbreads by Eliza

These are so delicious! We had them with hummus and I just love them. They are bit too crispy to use as a wrap type bread. They did take a bit longer than I was expecting but so worth it. We will be making them again really soon!

Hiring: Which Employees Should Be Avoided

Each employer wants to find a reliable candidate for the position. All business owners aim at maintaining a stable, friendly atmosphere in their employees. But statistics data is very disappointing: 78% of job seekers lie during an interview. It is obvious that the candidate will demonstrate his best qualities and hide his shortcomings and weaknesses. So how to identify the behavior of a candidate that could pose a threat to business? Unfortunately, there is no unified strategy for recogniz...

Federalism comes through on virus response

I’m in the Wall Street Journal today with this paywalled piece on the triumph of federalism on pandemic response: would-be modernizers aren’t scoffing at state government any more, as governors lead the way. The piece briefly mentions that after surviving yellow fever Alexander Hamilton and his wife Eliza underwent quarantine in the Schuyler Mansion on the order of Albany officials. That was a fun one to research. The essentials are found briefly stated in item number 10 of this list or in this...

Comment on homemade oreos by Eliza

These were awesome! I used butter in the filling and it was just perfect. I do wish that I had remembered to use Dutch cocoa instead of Hershey’s but they were still irresistible. I spread a dollop of filling in the center because I hate piping. They definitely had a homemade quality to them that was appealing.
