Three great club newsletters: SARC, PCARS, ERC

Every month (well, almost every month), I send out a column to amateur radio newsletter editors. (To get on the mailing list, click here.) As a result, these newsletter editors put me on their mailing lists, and I get a variety of club newsletters every month. Perhaps the most impressive newsletter that I get is from The Communicator from  Surrey Amateur Radio Communications. The April issue is the “Antenna Building Issue” and has articles on the Yagi-Uda antenna (you did know that Yagi wasn’t...

Decentralized Finance

While we wait for the blockchain/crypto technology to scale to the point where it can be the foundation of mainstream consumer applications (games, social media, e-commerce, etc), there is a sector where scalability is a little less important and where blockchain/crypto is starting to show some real signs of life. In the crypto space, it is called Decentralized Finance, or DeFi for short. It includes, of course, all of the ICO activity largely built on top of Ethereum and the ERC-20 token. Bu...

Thailand imposes extra fees on blockchain-powered p2p energy producers

New regulations drafted by Thailand officials demand that electricity producers using blockchain be charged additional fees. Government regulators fear an explosion in independent power generation will lead to a reduction in revenue. Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has demanded the fees be paid as a subsidy for potentially destabilizing effects blockchain technology brings, Nikkei Asian Review reports. “The number of household solar rooftop power generators is increasing rapi...

Blockchainpreneur: ‘I don’t know any good Ethereum developer that isn’t a millionaire’

The initial coin offering (ICO) market has grown rapidly over the past year, specifically since mid-2017. Several successful ICOs, including Bancor, EOS, and Tezos have raised billions of dollars through bitcoin and Ether (the native cryptocurrency of Ethereum). ICO tokens are particularly appealing to users of the Ethereum network because ICO tokens can be stored in Ethereum wallets which are compatible with the ERC 20 token standard. Every crypto-token available in the market has initiated an ...

Can we tell black holes apart?

Astrophysicists at Goethe University Frankfurt, and collaborators in the ERC-funded project BlackHoleCam in Bonn and Nijmegen have created and compared self-consistent and realistic images of the shadow of an accreting supermassive black hole. WIRTW #501 (the “fireflies” edition)

According to a recent study, going to concerts adds years to your life. If this is true (and who am I to argue with science), then last Thursday should propel me into triple digits. We went to see our fav, Rhett Miller, who invited Norah to share the stage and duet with him. I learned 4 things watching Norah: She’s got nerves of steel (which I kind of already knew). Her performance belies her 11 years of age (which is also kind of already knew). She can hold her own with a 30-year veteran of th...

Opinion: UK research in troubled political times

The clock is ticking for the UK in terms of research funding from the EU. Horizon 2020, the current framework programme, has provided an increasingly important source of funds for universities in the UK. Until recently, despite the uncertainties surrounding the UK’s preparations to withdraw from the EU, UK-based researchers were still being encouraged to apply for H2020 funding. But earlier this month an explicit warning shot was fired across the researchers’ bows. Now, although UK-based ...
