Coronavirus Update 8-10-2020: Indians quarantine of pitcher Zach Plesac is a teachable moment in handling irresponsible employees during this pandemic

The Cleveland Indians have sent pitcher Zach Plesac back to Cleveland from their current run of road games for breaking the team's COVID-19 protocols.  According to, MLB security personnel caught the pitcher returning to the team's hotel early Sunday morning after he had gone out with friends. The team has its own coronavirus code of conduct, which in part required Plesac to obtain permission before leaving the hotel. According to ESPN, the Indians hired a car service to return...

Clippers’ Doc Rivers foresaw a coaching future for Nets’ Jacque Vaughn

Perhaps not specifically on Sunday evening, but longer term, Doc Rivers is rooting for Jacque Vaughn. Entering the game against the Clippers, Brooklyn’s interim coach — promoted in March following Kenny Atkinson’s midseason departure — is 5-2, including 3-2 in the bubble. Brooklyn clinched a playoff berth last week with a 119-106 win over the Sacramento Kings in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. It’s the second NBA head coaching stint for the Pasadena native, who starred at John Muir High School, where...

Alexander: Sparks’ Seimone Augustus is on point in first game against her old team

Sparks’ coach Derek Fisher knows something about the stress of returning to face a former team, going back to his own NBA days. So if Seimone Augustus had any nervousness or apprehension about facing her former team Sunday, she was in the right place. Turns out, if she had any she didn’t let on. And none of it fazed her or her Los Angeles teammates, who withstood a third-quarter run from the Minnesota Lynx and went on to roll past their rivals, 97-81, in the WNBA’s bubble in Bradenton, Fla. Augu...

"In June and July, Fox News was the highest-rated television channel in the prime-time hours of 8 to 11 p.m. Not just on cable."

"Not just among news networks. All of television. The average live Fox News viewership in those hours outstripped cable rivals like CNN, MSNBC and ESPN, as well as the broadcast networks ABC, CBS and NBC, according to Nielsen. That three-hour slot is a narrow but significant slice of TV real estate, and it is exceedingly rare for a basic-cable channel to outrank the Big Three broadcasters, which are available in more households and offer a wider variety of programming. Even the return of live sp...

A Chinese golfer, not only playing in but leading a major on U.S. soil, who wears an advertisement on his hat for the social media app WeChat, at the very moment that the President is talking about “banning” WeChat and another Chinese app, TikTok … gee, what could possibly go wrong? Starz execs explain how they're partnering with potential rivals like Amazon and Apple and sharpening their programming focus to cut through the noise (LGFA)

Starz has added streaming subscribers and reduced cancellations, even as legacy-media giants like WarnerMedia and Peacock launch rival offerings.  Two top Starz execs told Business Insider that comarketing with platforms including Amazon Prime Video and Hulu has been key to that growth. "We're going to market with them in a lot of instances to try to grab subscribers together," Alison Hoffman, Starz' president of domestic networks, told Business Insider. How to Be More Creative

Those of us who weren’t fortunate enough to be born the next Picasso may think there’s no way we can learn to be more creative. But is that really true? According to some of the most creative people in the business, it’s not.  I recently interviewed Brian Koppelman, a renowned filmmaker, producer, and writer. He has worked on some of my favorite movies, like Rounders, Ocean’s Thirteen, and The Illusionist. He also created the popular T.V. show Billions, which has won many prestigious awards. ...

Inside the rise of Netflix's new 'badass' CMO, who rubs elbows with Anna Wintour and the Obamas and handled crises at Uber and Papa John's

Bozoma Saint John, Netflix's newly named chief marketing officer, has climbed the corporate-marketing ranks over 20 years using her celebrity connections and ability to tie brands like Pepsi and Apple to cultural trends. She's also known as unapologetically outspoken and a role model for women of color — who are notoriously underrepresented in the C-suites of corporations.  Netflix has long been synonymous with streaming video, but it needs to convince people to keep subscribing as new options...

Too Many Penalties

from Greg Wyshynski of ESPN, Like other players in the NHL's "bubble," Ryan Hartman of the Minnesota Wild watched a lot of postseason hockey during the first few days of the restarted 2019-20 season. He couldn't help but notice an obvious trend during his viewing binge. "A lot -- a lot -- of penalties were being called," he said. "There wasn't much getting by." That wasn't just perception. Alexander: Is Brooks Koepka primed for a PGA three-peat?

The PGA Championship will be held in San Francisco beginning Thursday and, well, this may be the eeriest major golf tournament in a long time, with no galleries to provide adrenaline at the moment a player might need it most. But does it feel like a major? Brooks Koepka thinks it does, fans or no fans, and that may be bad news for the rest of the field. “It’s pretty obvious it’s a major when you pull in,” Koepka said on a pre-tournament Zoom conference this week, when asked if he might have to c...

Disney Plus' audience growth has wildly exceeded expectations but it brings in less than half the revenue Netflix does per subscriber (DIS)

Disney Plus hit 60 million paid subscribers in August, a milestone the company initially told investors it hoped to reach by 2024.  The media giant bolstered its streaming audience with titles like "The Mandalorian," "Hamilton," and "Black Is King," as well as by bundling it for cheap with its other services, including Hotstar in India. But Disney Plus' streaming subscribers still bring in significantly less revenue on average than established services including Netflix and Disney-owned Hulu. ...

Pac-12 rescue: Mammoth loan program would bail out athletic departments if football is canceled

The Pac-12 is planning a mammoth loan program that would provide an escape hatch for cash-strapped athletic departments in the event the football season is canceled because of coronavirus, according to internal documents and conference sources. Football accounts for the majority of each department’s revenue, generating in excess of $50 million dollars in ticket sales and media rights alone. The loan program would be large enough to cover that loss for each school, if needed: According to a serie...

Lakers blend in Dion Waiters as Rajon Rondo’s rehab progresses

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Just 62 minutes into his Lakers tenure, Dion Waiters has already scored 30 points. That part of the game has always come naturally to Waiters, a career double-digit scorer who has sometimes been on the outs with his teams, but he has always possessed an offensive toolbox. While his 3-point jumper hasn’t been quite as hot (he’s just 3 for 14), Waiters has never been one to lack confidence in his shot. And down two guards, the Lakers need a player like him in the rotation....
