What is So Special About the Balenciaga $725 Boots?

In case you missed them, Balenciaga included a new line-up of $725 soccer cleats with their 2020 collection. Yes, you read that right, $725. First, you might be asking who or what in the world is Balenciaga is? Well, they are a luxury fashion house based in Paris, founded in 1917 by Basque designer Cristóbal Balenciaga. It is basically a chic brand for those with enough money to buy their products. What makes these boots so special? Well, other than the visual branding, not a whole lot really. ...

How To Recover From Blisters While Playing Soccer

With so many players returning to soccer action right now, there is one problem popping up more than ever before; blisters! After several months without scheduled soccer practices and games, our feet are more susceptible than ever to irritation. I’ve experienced it myself over the past few weeks, with new boots that I’m reviewing really testing out the conditions of my feet. And this is even more problematic for players who are now wearing new boots, switching from something that was previously...

Neymar is set to switch from Nike to Puma! It was revealed today that Neymar Jnr is set to make a dramatic brand switch over from Nike to Puma! Out goes the Mercurial Vapor NJR and the Jordan collaborations, in comes the all new evoSPEED NJR. Adidas Nemeziz 19.3 Laceless JNR Boot Review

Today, I have been testing the adidas Nemeziz 19.3 laceless. When I first saw these, they looked interesting. The top where usually the laces would be, instead there was a stretch fabric material that overlapped in dark blue. The color design on the outside was very interesting as well. Lines of light green and dark blue overlapped each other. They kind of look like someone took a paint brush and just painted a random design. And on the side written in black was printed, “NEMEZIZ” with the adid...

Say “spread spectrum” fast ten times

Yesterday, I recorded the Signals and Emissions chapter of my No Nonsense Extra Class License Study Guide audiobook. The final section of that chapter covers spread spectrum communications. I didn’t realize what a tongue twister “spread spectrum” is, and I had to say it ten times in less than two minutes! Here’s a clip: Notice how I have to slow down every time I say “spread spectrum?” That got me thinking about other amateur radio tongue twisters. Can you think of any? I as...

What is the feedpoint impedance of a bent dipole?

The other day, a friend of mine emailed me: I am putting up a multiband, right-angle dipole. That is to say that one element is vertical, the other horizontal. The vertical element is a 17-ft. telescoping whip, and the horizontal element is about 10% longer than the vertical element.  I have inductors wound for 40 meters and will try them later today. Once the antenna is working on both 20 meters  and 40 meters, I will tap the inductors and get the antenna to work on 30 meters. I need indu...

Amateur radio videos: WiFi antenna tuner, Heathkit presentation, QSO Today Expo review

I think this is a very cool project. I didn’t participate in many of the QSO Today Virtual Expo forums, but I did sit through this one, and being the old-time that I am, found it to be very interesting. I still have many Heathkits here in the shack including a triple-output, benchtop power supply that I use all the time. I also have a couple of code practice oscillators that I take with me when I do CW demonstrations. Just as an aside, Heathkit used to be located in Benton Harbor, MI. I li...

Monday round-up

Briefly: In the New York Times, Adam Liptak previews Uzuegbunam v. Preczewski, a case that will be argued before the Supreme Court this fall. The justices, Liptak writes, will decide whether a student at a public college can sue officials “for violating his First Amendment rights when they enforced a particularly severe version of the school speech codes that have become commonplace at colleges and universities around the nation.” The officials argue that the case is moot because, after the law...

What Are The 25 Best Soccer Cleats of All Time?

A few years back, Complex had a complete section on their site devoted to soccer footwear, something that we were able to provide input into. But since it has kind of fallen into the archives and out of the spotlight. Case in point, this 2012 article on the 25 Best Soccer Cleats Of All Time. It was a fun piece to put together and released a ton of reaction for fans. Some enjoyed the list, others felt like boots were missing or just shouldn’t have been placed as high as they were. Monday round-up

The Supreme Court begins its second week of summer recess as court watchers continue to absorb the news on Friday that Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has a recurrence of cancer. Politico’s Josh Gerstein reports that Ginsburg’s announcement renews focus on a lack of transparency around the justices’ health, with critics saying the public is entitled to more information. CNN’s Dan Berman notes that gemcitabine – the chemotherapy drug that Ginsburg began on May 19 – “is a standard chemotherapy treatme...

A different kind of Field Day, but still a lot of fun

So, how was your Field Day? Here, it was a lot different than usual. Our club cancelled the big event and everyone operated in some way from their homes. The bad thing, of course, is that Field Day wasn’t the big party that it usually is, but the good thing is that it gave me a chance to try some things that I probably would not have otherwise. And, I still had a lot of fun. The setup First of all, I decided to operate Class 1B-Battery.  I used my KX3, set to 5 W output and a BioEnno battery. ...

How To Pick The Best Soccer Cleats For Toddlers

So, you have a toddler in your life who is ready to embark on his or her soccer career. First note; before the age of 5, your budding star should only be kicking a ball for fun, beginning to grow a love for the game. As a result, there is no need to go looking for the most tech advanced boot on the market. It is comfort that is absolutely key. In fact, I wouldn’t judge any parent who allows their toddler to wear a pair of their favorite running shoes. But, there is something nostalgic about bei...

Salvagers to attempt recovery of Titanic’s Marconi radio

from yahoo! finance: A federal judge says RMS Titanic Inc. can go forward with its plan to cut into the Titanic shipwreck and try retrieving the Marconi wireless telegraph machine that sent out distress calls 108 years ago. In an order issued Monday in Norfolk, Va., District Judge Rebecca Beach Smith said RMS Titanic, the court-designated salvage firm for the Titanic, made its case that the radio had enough historic value to justify sending a specially equipped robot into the wreck. The remo...

Take the 2020 State of the Hobby Survey

Dustin, N8RMA, writes: First and foremost, I hope everyone is staying healthy out there. I was originally hoping to release this survey mid-March, but due to the pandemic response I was forced to change this up. I trust many others have had to make similar adjustments, so I hope folks understand. That said, the time has come for the survey to be released! I wanted to ensure I could devote the proper amount of time to promoting and administering the survey before I released it. Things have calmed...

Holding club meetings by Zoom/Skype/Meet?

No, this isn’t your typical amateur radio club member. I searched for “club” clipart, and this is one of the images that I found. This morning, I got an email from Nick, G4IWO. He writes: I am on the committee of the Denby Dale Amateur Radio Club – a small club based in Yorkshire in the North of England about 3 miles from my QTH. When we were faced with lockdown in the UK I took part in a club net on 2 meters and suggested that we carry on meeting, but using Zoom. I volunteered to set up...

A way back to relevance for amateur radio?

Normally, when I post a video, I post several of them. This one, however, I think is important enough to post on its own. Kamal Singh (M0IOV) gave this presentation—The Future and Growth of Amateur Radio—at the RSGB Convention in October 2019. I’ve been meaning to post and comment on it ever since I found out about it several months ago. His premise is that once amateur radio was relevant, visible, and appealing, but that we are no longer. He blames this, not on the coming of the internet, bu...

Under Armour HOVR Machina Running Shoe Review

With no soccer action over the past few months, road running has become a key piece of my stay fit routine. I’m sure a lot of you are encountering a very similar situation. First to respond were Under Armour, who offered up a pair of their tech advanced UA HOVR Machina, a running shoe that is designed to create a zero gravity feel on foot. No pause from Supreme Court for “public charge” rule during COVID-19 pandemic

Earlier this year, a divided Supreme Court gave the Trump administration the green light to enforce the “public charge” rule, which governs the admission of immigrants into the United States, while the government appeals orders by district courts in New York and Illinois that blocked it from doing so. Tonight the justices turned down pleas from the challengers in the case to put a temporary pause on the rule until the COVID-19 crisis is over. However, the justices did leave open the possibility ...

Nike Tiempo Legend “FUTURE DNA IV Elite” Released

Nike has released the 4th and final installment in their Future DNA series, taking the Tiempo Legend 8 back in time, paying homage to the 2011 edition. That 2011 version of Tiempo Legend IV Elite was the lightest Tiempo of its time — by at least 20 grams. Even more enticing than its lightweight feel was its ability to stand out on the pitch: the cleat’s vibrant orange pop of color from the tongue, heel graphic, stud tips and laces created a stark contrast from the black premium leather upper (a...
