How to End Up in Someone’s Spare Bedroom 500 Kilometres North of Santiago

It’s pitch dark outside, which is a sure sign it’s way too early to be up, packing. I hope I’ll be able to find a taxi. I hope I won’t get lost in the maze of the San Borja bus terminal. I hope I’ll find the right bus—apparently, mine says “Iquique” (even though I’m going to La Serena) and it should arrive at platform 35 (or 41, or 24, according to the company’s employee). I hope I’m making the right move, because I have no idea where I’m going. I spent four nights in Santiago and I took surpris...

Expedia Analysts Grow More Bullish After Strong Earnings

While growth in Expedia’s home rental service disappointed, the company made up for it with strength in its core platform. Cowen also sees positive read-through to peers Booking Holdings Inc. and TripAdvisor Inc., which report later this month. “HomeAway was the major disappointment” in the fourth quarter and the lack of prior warning from management suggested it must have started to deteriorate at the end of the year, after third-quarter results.

Are Apps Really Recording Your iPhone’s Screen?

Hadrian/Shutterstock.com TechCrunch claims many iPhone apps “secretly record your screen.” Is that true? Well, yes, kind of—but their recording abilities are limited. Apple is now cracking down on these apps and requiring more transparency, too. An App Can Only Record Your Activity In the App First, let’s make this clear: iPhone and iPad apps can’t record everything you do on your phone’s screen. An app can only record what happens within the app itself. In other words, even if an app is...

Many Popular iPhone Apps Secretly Record Your Screen Without Asking (slashdot)

An anonymous reader quotes a report from TechCrunch: Many major companies, like Air Canada, Hollister and Expedia, are recording every tap and swipe you make on their iPhone apps. In most cases you won't even realize it. And they don't need to ask for permission. You can assume that most apps are collecting data on you. Some even monetize your data without your knowledge. But TechCrunch has found several popular iPhone apps, from hoteliers, travel sites, airlines, cell phone carriers, banks and ...

Expedia Analysts Grow More Bullish After Strong Earnings Report

While growth in Expedia’s home rental service disappointed, the company made up for it with strength in its core platform. Cowen also sees positive read-through to peers Booking Holdings Inc. and TripAdvisor Inc. The firm highlighted the positive ad ROI environment as well as Expedia’s stable nights growth, which should ease concerns about industry growth and about Expedia posing a major threat to Booking in international markets in the near term.

A Rollercoaster of Emotions in Santiago

I’m on a rollercoaster of emotions when I arrive in Santiago, after the border crossing. I love this city, but I’ve never experienced it alone even if I entertained fantasies about moving here—“be realistic, Juliette!” “Yes, Feng…”. It’s 40⁰C, the taxi driver is talking way too fast and once again, I realize that even though I know the city very well, it’s going to take me a bit of time to adjust to Chile. “I’m from Argentina,” the taxi driver says apropos of nothing, as if he wanted to confuse ...

No one likes to get sick, especially while on a vacation away from home, even more so in a country where you don’t speak the language. EZE to MDZ – Buenos Aires to Mendoza

“Mendoza it is!,” I emailed Feng a few minutes after finalizing this leg of the trip, i.e. booking the hotel and the plane ticket, hoping my credit card wouldn’t be flagged for suspicious purchases—I mean, I usually use it to buy groceries at Walmart, in Ottawa, Scotiabank could legitimately worry about my whereabouts. Both transactions went through and Expedia congratulated me—“You’re going to Mendoza!” Why Mendoza? Because it’s across the country, on the east side of the Andes, close to Chile....

Bill Gates made these 15 predictions back in 1999 — and it's scary how accurate he was (MSFT)

In 1999, Bill Gates wrote a book titled "Business @ the Speed of Thought." In the book, Gates made 15 bold predictions that at the time might have sounded outrageous. But as Markus Kirjonen, a business student, once noted on his blog, Gates' forecasts turned out to be eerily prescient. Here are the 15 predictions Gates made just about 20 years ago — and how close they've come to being true. Eugene Kim and Biz Carson contributed to earlier versions of this slideshow.SEE ALSO: 19 crazy facts about...

A quarter of hotels more expensive on OTAs

According to a study by the Center for European Economic Research (ZEW), hotels are given inferior positions in the search results, for example if they quote cheaper prices on their own website. "Not every positioning and recommendation on major booking portals such as Booking.com and Expedia is therefore in the interest of the users," the study says.

A foodie guide to Adelaide

Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, has always been known by many as the city of churches. Rather ironically, these days there are more bars and pubs than churches in the CBD, largely thanks to recent changes in small bar licensing. The food scene in Adelaide has evolved drastically over the last five years; the entire CBD is now adorned with food trucks, small bars, tuck shops, cafes, burger joints and farmers markets. Adelaide is quickly rising as the next must-visit foodie destinatio...

Punta del Este’s Famous Hand and Beaches

The first thing you see when you step outside the bus terminal is a giant hand, five human fingers made of iron and cement and partially emerging from sand. It’s La Mano, from Chilean artist Mario Irarrázabal. Go ahead, stand beside it and ask someone to take a picture, it’s a fixture in Punta del Este. Half of Uruguay is very rural and you’ve probably never heard of cities like Paysandú, Las Piedras, Durazno or Treinta y Tres—I discover a new one every time I look at the destinations listed at ...
