Facebook prototypes a swipeable hybrid carousel of feed posts & Stories

Feed and Stories unite! Facebook is so eager to preempt the shift to Stories that it might even let us use the same interface of horizontally swipeable cards to sift through News Feed posts. If users won’t scroll down any more, Facebook’s ad business could take a huge hit. But by allowing traditional feed posts and ads to appear amidst Stories in the same carousel you’re more prone to swipe through, it could squeeze more views and dollars out of that content. This would help Facebook graceful...

Mark Zuckerberg actually calls for regulation of content, elections, privacy

It’s been a busy day for Facebook exec op-eds. Earlier this morning, Sheryl Sandberg broke the site’s silence around the Christchurch massacre, and now Mark Zuckerberg is calling on governments and other bodies to increase regulation around the sorts of data Facebook traffics in. He’s hoping to get out in front of heavy-handed regulation and get a seat at the table shaping it. The founder published a letter simultaneously on his own page and The Washington Post, the latter of which is an idea...

5 Tips for Getting Results when Search Volume Is Low

While a properly managed PPC campaign can work well for most industries, some niches are more difficult than others to see results in. Some products and services just don’t receive a significant number of search queries, particularly in B2B niches where the audience is tightly defined. Perhaps a business maintains highly specialized machinery for industrial settings, or sells software targeted toward C-level individuals in credit unions. Or, the business may only service a narrow geographic are...

3 weeks in to Facebook ads

I have now spent £600 on Facebook ads! You may remember from my analysis a week back that I was losing money. So am I in profit yet? Ha ha, no! I have made £500 so far, so I am still £100 underwater. This is actually pretty generous too, assigning all earnings to FB ads, which is not accurate – even without ads I get a couple of sales a day, so it’s probably more like £200-£300 losses. Well well well. Oddly though, I am holding my nerve still. In practical terms, I have only lost £100, which is ...

Why Paid Media Must Be Part of Your Social Content Strategy

Since 2013, organic distribution of brand’s social media, especially on Facebook, has taken a hit. Today, brands are lucky to get 3% organic reach on their social content. This decrease in organic reach by platforms has caused a huge spike in brands paying billions of dollars to advertise to see any kind of meaningful results from their efforts. So why should you use paid media to support your social efforts? Reach and conversion are two very important reasons. Importance of Paid Media in Your...

8 books returned in one day!!?!

Yesterday I had an epic day in Facebook ad response – 29 books sold across two series, earning $54 there and then with more to trickle in over today and tomorrow, on $65 worth of spend. Almost getting to the breakeven point? I had some great responses to ads, and as I learned from Michael Cooper, every comment on your ad increases its relevance in Facebook’s eyes. My challenge blurbs are raising a few hackles, but more people are saying they’ve gone on to buy the books in question because of the...

PPC Best Practices We Love to Hate & Hate to Love

When it comes to Valentine’s Day candy, I have a love-hate relationship with the colorful candy hearts pictured above. On one hand, I love that they remind me of childhood and the fun parties that we would have in elementary school. They’re also so pretty and festive. On the other hand, I hate that they taste like chalk. Maybe their absence this year will make my heart grow fonder of them when they return next year. During my years in PPC, I’ve found that there are a lot of best practices just...

Facebook will reveal who uploaded your contact info for ad targeting

Facebook’s crack down on non-consensual ad targeting last year will finally produce results. In March, TechCrunch discovered Facebook planned to require advertisers pledge that they had permission to upload someone’s phone number or email address for ad targeting. That tool debuted in June, though there was no verification process and Facebook just took businesses at their word despite the financial incentive to lie. In November, Facebook launched a way for ad agencies and marketing tech deve...

The BIG List: PPC Text Ad Character Limits

Several years ago, I put together a BIG List of PPC Image Ad Sizes. This post stemmed from many questions from both the Clix team and clients about what image dimensions were needed for each channel. Since then, we have continued to get the same question about ad character limits. I love making sure my clients’ overall marketing messages are portrayed in our ads, but it’s always a pain when there are too many 10-letter words to fit in a 25 character headline. Google Ads Responsive search ad...

Today’s Shadow Brokers: Facebook’s Data Sharing Loophole Ripe for Exploitation

What if I told you there is still a data loophole of sorts that exists on a platform billions use every day, that any unscrupulous advertiser could exploit? A couple weeks ago, I saw a wonderful thread on Twitter, dissecting why the sharing of data in light of the 2016 elections is a big deal. Don’t worry, this post isn’t political — but it did remind me there are many ways in which data gets shared, and it’s rather mysterious to your average citizen who doesn’t geek out in ad platforms...
