“I had an idea how the day would pan out but I went anyway” – a match report

Send your match reports to [email protected] If it’s a professional match, on no account mention the cricket itself. If it’s an amateur match, feel free to go into excruciating detail. Edwardian went to Cambridge MCCU versus Worcestershire CCC at Fenner’s back in April. Edwardian writes… I had an idea how the day would pan out but I went anyway. I hadn’t been able to get to any of the county fixtures at Fenner’s so I decided to go, expecting to leave at lunch...

Cambridge University v Arabs match report

Edwardian writes: I arrived at Fenner’s just after start of play and exchanged a ‘hello’ with an Arab in a floppy hat on the boundary. I had to bone up on Arabs before the match. Kurtz-Fest

Stuart Kurtz turned 60 last October and his former students John Rogers and Stephen Fenner organized a celebration in his honor earlier this week at Fenner's institution, the University of South Carolina in Columbia. Stuart has been part of the CS department at the University of Chicago since before they had a CS department and I knew Stuart well as a co-author, mentor, boss and friend during my 14+ years at Chicago. I would have attended this weekend no matter the location but a total eclipse...

It’s hard to walk in the shoes of someone with a serious mental health condition, but art can play a major role in bridging the divide. Kate Fenner, an 18-year-old artist, tapped into this exact creative process in order to better explain how her schizophrenia diagnosis affects her everyday reality. The result is a series of illustrations that perfectly capture how the mental health disorder feels and manifests: A 10 minute self portrait: 3:30 AM. I would do more, but It's like I&#...

Waterworld: can we learn to live with flooding?

In December 2015, Storm Desmond hit the north of the UK. In its wake came floods, the misery of muddy, polluted water surging through homes and the disruption of closed businesses, schools and roads. Rapid urban growth and progressively unpredictable weather have focused attention on the resilience of cities worldwide not just to extreme events, but also to heavier-than-normal rainstorms, and raised questions as to how flood risk can be managed. There is of course no ‘one-size-fits-all’ ...
