How Popeyes’ New Global CMO Plans to Make the Niche Brand Into a Mass Brand

Paloma Azulay was quietly appointed Popeyes global chief marketing officer in January, and stepped into the role last month. Prior to that, she was global CMO for another of Restaurant Brands International's iconic chains: Tim Hortons, the beloved Canada-based coffee-centric fast-food chain. In her relatively new role, Azulay is reporting directly to Fernando Machado, who...

Let’s be fans: how clients get the best from agencies

Headlines continue to chronicle the woes agencies face at the hands of demanding clients. There’s Audi, which ungenerously put its business to pitch after almost half-a-century of success with BBH; big pharmaceutical companies, like GSK, continue to “simplify” their rosters while shrinking compensation; and there’s my former employer, General Mills, which is on the hunt for more agencies with what sounds like a rifle of rough terms. Yes, procurement horses are stampeding all around. None o...

Burger King's anti-Happy Meals are pissing some people off, but BK is used to that

Earlier this week, Burger King introduced a new offering, a set of “Real Meals” acknowledging that people aren’t happy all the time. Including selections like the Pissed Meal, the Blue Meal and the DGAF Meal, they’re a playful dig at its competitor McDonald's Happy Meals. Consulting firms are encroaching on the advertising business. Here's why Burger King's top marketing exec doesn't buy into the consulting firm hype.

Fernando Machado, the global chief marketing officer of Burger King, doesn't think consulting firms have much creative prowess, at least not yet.  "I don't see the value [in working with them]," Machado told Business Insider in a recent interview. Some of the fast-food chain's most iconic campaigns would never have come to life if it weren't for its agencies, said Machado. See the full list of ...

Did Burger King’s Super Bowl Ad Actually Work? CMO Fernando Machado Shares 10 Insights

It was a Super Bowl ad unlike any other--for better or worse. Burger King's #EatLikeAndy ad in this year's Big Game was a surreal 45 seconds of Andy Warhol silently eating a Whopper.
