Flames’ Dream Season Buried by Avalanche

The Calgary Flames were the second-best team in the National Hockey League during the 2018-19 regular season, winning 50 games. However, their breakout season came to a screeching halt via a five-game first round series loss to the Colorado Avalanche. The Colorado Avalanche were a step ahead of the Calgary Flames during their first round playoff series. (THE CANADIAN PRESS/Jeff McIntosh) There are several competing theories regarding the Flames’ loss to the Avalanche which try to expla...

Flames Scratch Veteran Neal & Juggle Lines for Game 5

CALGARY — Facing elimination and requiring an offensive spark, the Calgary Flames scratched playoff veteran James Neal to make room for Austin Czarnik in Friday night's Game 5 against the Colorado Avalanche. Calgary head coach Bill Peters confirmed the move after Friday's pre-game skate. The Flames trailed the Avalanche three games to one in their best-of-seven opening-round series. Czarnik, 26, will make his NHL playoff debut. He had six goals and 12 assists in 54 regular-season games for...

The Calgary Flames Will Face Elimination On Friday After OT Loss To The Colorado Avalanche

from Eric Francis of Sportsnet, The Calgary Flames have a five-alarm fire on their hands. Despite another heroic goaltending outing by Mike Smith, the Flames return to Calgary Friday facing the very real possibility another conference champion is about to bite the dust courtesy of a wild-card club. The Flames allowed a game-tying goal in the final three minutes for the second time in this series, setting up a 3-2 overtime loss and 3-1 series deficit. This time Colorado’s hero ...

Avalanche Bury Flames for 2-1 Lead – Makar Shines in NHL Debut

DENVER — Nathan MacKinnon scored twice in the first period and set up newly signed rookie Cale Makar’s first NHL goal in his debut as the Colorado Avalanche routed the Calgary Flames 6-2 on Monday night to take a 2-1 lead in their first-round playoff series. Matt Nieto added a short-handed goal, and Mikko Rantanen and Erik Johnson also scored for the wild-card Avalanche, who built a 6-1 lead early in the third period and finished with 56 shots. Philipp Grubauer was credited with 27 saves. ...

Flames Shouldn’t Waste Smith’s Strong Goaltending

Heading into the 2019 Stanley Cup playoffs, the Calgary Flames looked like a potential Cup contender. However, the most common source of pre-playoff anxiety was their goaltending. Colorado Avalanche’s Gabriel Bourque is stopped by by Calgary Flames goalie Mike Smith (THE CANADIAN PRESS/Jeff McIntosh) Ironically, through the first two games of their first round series with the Colorado Avalanche, goaltending has been the only consistently strong element of the team’s performances. ...

Flames’ Fourth Line Swings Playoff Opener

The Calgary Flames began their 2019 Stanley Cup playoff journey with Game 1 against the Colorado Avalanche. They won 4-0, capturing their first post-season victory since 2015. Flames left wing Andrew Mangiapane scored the game-winner in Game 1 against the Colorado Avalanche. (Sergei Belski-USA TODAY Sports) The game-winning goal was scored by a fourth line player that was still in junior the last time the Flames won a playoff game. Flames Top Line Hoping to Regain Form in Game 1

CALGARY — The Flames are hoping the team’s top line of Johnny Gaudreau, Sean Monahan and Elias Lindholm will regain its mid-season form in Game 1 of Calgary’s playoff series against the Colorado Avalanche. The players struggled following the NHL All-Star break but head coach Bill Peters isn’t worried considering the play of other players like Matthew Tkachuk and Derek Ryan. “Which line is that again? I gotta make sure I know which line you’re talking about,” joked Peters when asked about t...

Weekend Preview (Apr 6)

Welcome to the final day of the regular season! What is really left to play for?  Well, there's jockeying to be done in the NHL playoff races, as the Jackets did clinch the final spot in the Eastern Conference last night, so now we just try to figure out who is playing where in a few cases. The biggest story in the hockey pool, which is a horrible long shot, but it's all we got... can anyone [Author: opiatedsherpa]

Morning Player Notes (Apr 4)

One healthy scratch that was overlooked before the Calgary Flames taking on the Anaheim Ducks when the line rushes were published yesterday afternoon was Elias Lindholm getting the night off ahead of the playoff run.  The Flames dropped that game against the Ducks, but they really pared down their roster to the bare essentials to play, rather than icing their best team.  The Flames have one [Author: opiatedsherpa]

Flames’ Neal Ends Cold Streak In Final Stretch

Calgary Flames left-winger James Neal is a patient individual. This can be seen by his persistent play all season long, creating numerous scoring opportunities, dealing big hits when they mattered, and overall establishing an irrefutable physical presence on the ice. Despite his efforts, however, the veteran forward continually walked away empty-handed each game in terms of points. While his work ethic is undeniable, the 2018-19 National Hockey League regular season has seen an ice cold Neal...

Evening Preview (Apr 3)

There isn't a great deal of intrigue among tonight's three games in the NHL, as there is only one of them that has any sort of meaning towards the playoffs, the other two are just something to watch for the sake of watching it. There isn't even a whole lot of intrigue in the hockey pool out of these three game.  No games that have any merit to the money race, one top 10 game and Scott trying [Author: opiatedsherpa]

Morning Player Notes (Apr 2)

Toronto Maple Leafs rookie forward Andreas Johnsson missed out on the playoff-clinching game last night on Long Island thanks to a bout of the flu.  He was under the weather and could not go in the game, currently listed as out day-to-day for right now.  The Leafs are right back at it tonight, at home against the Hurricanes, so there's usually a good chance a player will play the night after a [Author: opiatedsherpa]

Evening Preview (Apr 1)

The end of the tunnel is beginning to show some light and the NHL regular season is finally coming to a close this coming weekend.  We begin the last week of the season with eight games on the schedule and only a little bit to play for, by the look of things. The race for 2nd place is alive and well, as the duo of Kristy & Don jumped up there with a monster week and Stacey M.'s team is [Author: opiatedsherpa]

The Flames’ MVP – Gaudreau or Giordano?

The Calgary Flames are enjoying their best on-ice performance in 30 years. In the standings, the team is seeing successes they haven’t seen since the 1988-89 season that netted them a Stanley Cup. Calgary Flames defenseman Mark Giordano is the heart and soul of his team. (AP Photo/Bill Kostroun) While the team’s success is a product of a collective effort, two players have really driven the group to new heights in 2018-19: captain Mark Giordano and leading scorer Johnny Gaudreau. Evening Preview (Mar 29)

I'm going to try and brand these afternoon posts a little differently for the last week (and a little bit) of the season, ahead of next year.  I think a little more can be done, since there are usually some news bytes that could be done here and there's a lot more to the pool than just the goalies, right? Let's see how this goes.  It's a work in progress, to say the least. Jordan Binnington [Author: opiatedsherpa]

Handicapping Flames Potential Playoff Opponents

For the third time in five seasons under general manager Brad Treliving, the Calgary Flames are headed to the Stanley Cup playoffs. But for a team that has escaped the first round just twice in the last 30 years, the luck of the draw in the opening round could be massively important. Some potential first round opponents would be more of a challenge for the Calgary Flames than others. (THE CANADIAN PRESS/Jeff McIntosh) The odds-makers and standings projections have the Flames likely f...

Stars Down Flames – Bishop Injured

CALGARY — Miro Heiskanen scored the winner in the Stars’ 2-1 victory over the Calgary Flames on Wednesday, but the Dallas victory was tainted by an injury to goaltender Ben Bishop. Play was blown down with Bishop down on his knees in obvious discomfort at 13:22 of the second. He skated off the ice under his own power but went straight to the dressing room. Bishop appeared to wince earlier in the period after dropping into the butterfly and shuffling across his crease to track a shot. Al...

Goalie Announcements (Mar 27)

There are only four games on the docket for the NHL on this fine Wednesday and surprisingly, all four games had their goalies confirmed by the lunch hour today.  How fortunate for us. Both Neil and Stacey C. are watching their teams torch the points column, both of them are up with 16 points through the first couple of nights and they currently sit 7th and 8th in the standings, respectively.  [Author: opiatedsherpa]

Morning Player Notes (Mar 22)

The New York Islanders will be without forward Valtteri Filppula for the remainder of the regular season, as he has been sidelined with an upper-body injury, an injury suffered in Boston on Tuesday night.  Filppula's regular season was sub-par, even on a surprising team like the Islanders this season, posting 15 goals and 29 points in 71 games this season, only good enough for 281st in pool [Author: Clayton Corley]

Goalie Announcements (Mar 19)

It's Tuesday!  The days are just flying by, aren't they? We'll be having a quick peek at the playoff situations for a bunch of these games tonight, 10 games on the schedule.  There was only one night worth of action so far this week, so I won't get too crazy about the weekly scoring numbers yet.  Let's make this post quick and dirty. Afternoon Player Notes (Mar 18)

Currently working on his own personal shutout streak, Ben Bishop of the Dallas Stars suffered a lower-body injury late last week and he was unable to put any starts in on the weekend, missing out on Friday and Sunday games.  He's currently listed as out day-to-day and did come out for a little bit of practice on Sunday, but there's no apparent timetable for his return at the moment.  The Stars [Author: Clayton Corley]

Jets Beat Flames – End 3-Game Winning Streak

WINNIPEG — Mark Scheifele scored his 34th goal of the season as the Winnipeg Jets halted the Calgary Flames’ three-game winning streak with a 2-1 victory on Saturday. The Flames needed at least one point to clinch a playoff spot or have Minnesota lose to the New York Rangers in their Saturday game. Mathieu Perreault scored the game-winning goal for the Jets (42-25-4) and Connor Hellebuyck made 27 saves. Mark Jankowski had a goal for the Flames (43-21-7) and Mike Smith stopped 19 shots. Goalie Announcements (Mar 12)

It's good to see a fresh team jump up to the top of the weekly standings, as Stacey C.'s team went bucky on Monday night, picking up 11 points and taking an early lead into a somewhat busy Tuesday night.  The big night saw his team jump up five spots in the standings, going from 17th to 12th and if his team continues to roll, there's still plenty of room to move. Goalie Announcements (Mar 10)

Sunday fun day!  We close out another week with five games on the schedule and I think we've only got one more race to really figure out, barring a minor miracle somewhere. Flames’ Goaltending Still in Question as Playoffs Draw Near

For the Calgary Flames, it seemed like the issue was put to bed ages ago. Not only was netminder Mike Smith finally hitting his stride, but newbie goalie David Rittich also looked to be coming into form. In many respects, the Flames appeared to have successfully found a cure to their longstanding netminding vulnerabilities, with two strong goalies to lean upon. However, due to unsettling recent developments, that pesky old question has come to the surface once again: does Calgary have a goaltend...

Goalie Announcements (Mar 7)

It's pretty rare to see a team, during a full week of action, have no points through the first three nights of the week, but the hockey gods seem to have it out for Brian's team, as he still hasn't seen a sniff this week.  Monday, that's understandable, usually a quiet night.  Tuesday, nothing?  There's a lot of games usually that night, so you should be seeing something.  Wednesday, nothing? Goalie Announcements (Mar 6)

Last night, there were three shootouts out of 10 games on the schedule, so this is really becoming a thing, finally!  The pool only collected 5 goals, but hey, that mini-game is really heating up.  I wonder how I can incorporate that into this goalie post. Goalie Announcements (Mar 4)

Welcome to the brand new week, Week Twenty-Three. This is the least busiest week of the remaining five, with only 48 games on the schedule, but as we draw closer and closer to the end of the season, the value of these games increase.  If last week was any indication, teams are trying not to give games away and they find their way to the shootouts, which is good for one mini-game, at least. Most Valuable Flame: Iginla’s Number Retired

For a franchise with nearly five decades of history, the Calgary Flames have been very selective when celebrating it. Heading into the 2018-19 campaign, the club had retired only two jersey numbers and honoured two others – a surprisingly low figure given the number of Hockey Hall of Fame inductees that have worn the Flaming C over the years. Jarome Iginla’s #12 jersey was retired by the Calgary Flames on March 2, 2019. (THE CANADIAN PRESS/Jeff McIntosh) On Saturday, March 2, the Flames added ...
