Astros confiscate fan’s sign, booed in first spring training game

The Houston Astros' sign-stealing scandal was taken to a whole new level on Saturday. The team held its first spring training game of the year in Florida on Saturday, a matchup against the Washington Nationals, and were naturally booed heavily throughout the contest. One man even brought a fairly clever sign to hold up behind home plate to honor the reigning World Series champions — who are caught up in a massive cheating scandal that has dominated the offseason.

Ducks use humor to block out worries as NHL’s trade deadline nears

IRVINE — Coach Dallas Eakins joked recently that he was never good enough as a player to be traded during his NHL career. Defenseman Korbinian Holzer cracked that since he had played with league’s most scrutinized team, the Toronto Maple Leafs, earlier in his career he had been traded 700 times. More seriously, newly-acquired center David Backes delayed his departure for Anaheim after Friday’s trade so that he could at least hug his wife and children who had gone to Florida from their Boston hom...

Why I love caring for geriatric patients

As I enter the exam room, I hear, “Don’t get old honey!” As a physician caring for a large population of geriatric patients in Florida, I hear this approximately five times a day. To this statement, I always reply, “There’s no alternative, though!”  I also try not to get offended by repeatedly being called “honey.” […] Find jobs at Careers by KevinMD.com. Search thousands of physician, PA, NP, and CRNA jobs now. Learn more.

Travel: Peel back the centuries in St. Augustine, America’s oldest city

My family finally took a long-awaited trip in December to St. Augustine, America’s oldest consistently populated city in the continental United States, established by Spain in 1565. This enchanting city on Florida’s Atlantic coast, oozing with old-world charm, did not disappoint. Our only mistake was not staying longer and seeing more of the city’s sights and beaches. St. Augustine has earned some well-deserved accolades in the travel industry. In 2018, Conde Nast Traveler included St. Augustine...

Tiger Woods skipping Honda Classic for second straight year

For the second consecutive year Tiger Woods will skip what essentially is his hometown event next week when the PGA Tour travels to South Florida for the Honda Classic. Woods, who lives in Jupiter Island about 15 miles from PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, said following last week's Genesis Invitational that he would take some time off before he started training again, presumably in time to play the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, where he's won eight times. Fort Lauderdale's art scene

The idea of going to an art gallery used to absolutely terrify me. Nothing makes you feel like more of a fraud than entering a room full of artists and aficionados, and pretending to be moved by a piece of abstract expressionism that, for all you know, is a picture of an exploded rubber band ball. Enjoying art at the amateur level can be tricky, because many galleries, museums, and art districts feel intimidating to those outside the art community. I had come to terms with the fact that I’d n...

SpaceX anticipates building “many rockets” as it iterates Starship towards orbital flight this year

SpaceX founder Elon Musk has been sharing a number of updates about his company’s progress on Starship this week. Along with footage of the assembly process of the current ‘SN1’ prototype of Starship, he explained on Twitter some of the other considerations and strategies the company is working with as it works on the new spacecraft and tries to fly it to space this year. Musk said that SpaceX is iterating at a much faster pace with Starship than it has recently with Falcon, since Falcon’s...

Stream Seed Of Pain’s New Album Flesh, Steel, Victory…

The South Florida band Seed Of Pain play a fervent, intense, blood-gargling form of metallic hardcore -- one built on riffs and grooves and screams. It's a visceral, physical sound, and it kicks a whole lot of ass. Today, the band -- which shares members with other Florida bands like Ecostrike and Envision -- releases … More »

Maple Leafs News & Rumors: Muzzin, Andersen, Malgin & Barrie Trade?

What an odd game this hockey is. Two teams played on two nights and looked like two completely different teams each night. I’m sure that sounds confusing, but on Tuesday night in Pittsburgh, the Toronto Maple Leafs were simply steamrolled by the Penguins by a 5-2 score. Two nights later, the Penguins were completely overwhelmed by the Maple Leafs by a score of 4-0. The teams completely switched roles and results. Weekly Roundup, Friday 21 February 2020

By all accounts, the Airbus A220 is a lovely plane, well liked by airlines and passengers alike. How ironic that this great airplane almost completely destroyed its developer – Bombardier. See story below. Good morningThe Covid-19 virus (it now has a name) has been enormously on my mind the last several weeks, and for very direct and personally impactful reasons.  To help clarify my thinking, I wrote a detailed and careful analysis of the present situation and the possible unfolding future, an...

Tennessee completes yet another execution using the electric chair

As reported in this AP piece, a "convicted murderer was put to death in Tennessee's electric chair Thursday, becoming the state's fifth prisoner over 16 months to choose electrocution over the state's preferred method of lethal injection."  Here are the basics: Nicholas Sutton, 58, was pronounced dead at 7:26 p.m. at the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville. Asked if he had any last words, Sutton looked directly into the witness room and spoke clearly. “I would like to thank my w...

Why Florida’s New Parental Consent Law For Abortion Is Problematic

In the latest reproductive legislation in the U.S., a new Florida requires people under the age of 18 to get a parental permission before having an abortion. On Thursday, legislature passed in a largely party-line vote of 75-43. Now, Governor Ron DeSantis is expected to sign the bill into law, but the ramifications for the new bill are still up for debate. Across the country, legislation around abortion has created storied obstacles for specific populations — teens included. According ...
