And now, her personal journey has led her to spread that love to others. Maria is Portland’s hill-climbing ambassador. Disability rights activist pushes bill for more diversity on ODOT committees

People who ride these have a very different perspective. (Photo: Jonathan Maus/BikePortland) A bill working its way through the Oregon Legislature seeks to add new faces to state transportation advisory committees. The man behind the effort also happens to be the first Oregonian to get a disabled parking placard for his bicycle. Some of you might recall our 2018 story about Forest Grove resident Chris Billman. After being denied twice, Billman, who has scoliosis and other physical challenge...

Amid opposition and delays, Yamhelas Westsider Trail planning effort chugs along

The project would be built on an abandoned railroad line along Highway 47. Imagine a connection between this path, the Salmonberry (to the coast) and the Crown Z (to the Columbia River). When moms escape: Tackling the unpaved Trask River Road route to the coast

Team Sundress ready to hit Trask River Road (after an hour-long ride on the MAX).(Photos: Madi Carlson) “It was by far the hardest thing either of us have ever done, but we’d both do it again…though only after some rest and time to forget some of the details.” While the kids are away the moms will play. For me that means riding my bike much farther while carrying a bit less stuff than when I have the kiddos in tow. And ideally with a mom friend at my side. My friend Elle of Tiny Helmets...

Oregon begins process to legalize electric-assist bikes in state parks

E-bikes are currently illegal on paths like the Banks-Vernonia. A new rule would change that.(Photo: J. Maus/BikePortland) The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department wants to update their rules regarding electric bicycles. As we were first to report last summer, electric bikes are not currently legal to ride on paths in Oregon State Parks. That’s because park paths are governed by Oregon Administrative Rules (OAR), which currently classify electric bicycles as “motor vehicles” — thereby prohibi...

Chris Billman is the only Oregonian with a disabled parking decal for his bicycle

It’s not a bike, it’s a personal mobility device.(Photos: Chris Billman) 61-year-old Forest Grove resident Chris Billman got a new lease on life when he discovered cycling. He was born with scoliosis and suffers from a litany of degenerative issues including spinal stenosis and liver disease. He needs a cane to walk, and when he does, his legs can go numb. But put his feet on pedals and everything changes. Billman started riding years ago by putting upright “chopper” handlebars on a Schwinn 1...

1966 Chevrolet Corvair homecoming – missed deadlines

Prepositioning script and body trim with blue painter tape. It’s got to fit before it is attached. Photos by author. Originally, this was supposed to be an optimistic update of a project well along. But as things have worked out, I’m now fairly discouraged. Not yet depressed, and certainly not defeated, but the original timeline to get this car into the Forest Grove Concours on July 16 might not be possible. It’s just feeling as though time is running out two weeks too soon. Sometimes new tr...

1966 Chevrolet Corvair homecoming – the turning point

On the trailer going to the shop. Just love those narrow whitewalls! Photos by author. I have come to and passed the turning point in the Corvair project:  More things are now going in or on the car than are coming off. Getting to here has taken longer than I’d planned, and the project is now officially six weeks behind. I’d hoped to get the rebuilt drivetrain into the car by the end of February. I was generous with the time, and figured if it happened by the end of March, that’d still be OK. ...

Remembering Mitch York, Portland’s latest victim of traffic violence

Mitch York, self-portrait. May 2016. 55-year-old northeast Portland resident Mitch York died on Saturday while he was riding his bike across the St. Johns Bridge. He was likely on his way to another ride on some of his favorite roads in the west hills. Mitch was only a few tenths of a mile from the quiet backroads, steep climbs, and gravel roads he often set out to explore. Our picture of who Mitch was is still coming into focus, but it’s clear from his photography that cycling played a large ...
