In passing of Yazdani’s Zend, Mumbai has lost a master baker

“Get rid of your cough, eat my ginger biscuit.” The baker who kneaded such happy prescriptions into Mumbai’s gut via the blackboard of the iconic Yazdani bakery in Fort is no more. Zend Meherwan Zend, the jovial co-owner of the six-decade-old Irani bakery who said bread must have a bite to it and who did not let Parkinson’s disease keep him from sipping tea or relishing ice-cream at the cash counter, passed away at age 86 this past Sunday. Co-owner of Fort’s Yazdani Bakery, Zend Meherwan Zend, dies at 86

Food historian Kurush Dalal recalls Zend as the baker who wasn’t afraid to experiment and wished to give his customers quality products. Sitting behind the cash counter or instructing staff by the woodfire oven, Zend Meherwan Zend was synonymous with Yazdani Bakery. He was a regular at the iconic bakery in Fort, even after being afflicted with acute Parkinson’s in his later years. On Sunday, Zend died due to advancing age. He was 86. Maneckji Seth Agiary – Parsi Imprint on Mumbai

Anyone who has lived in or grown up in Mumbai would know at least one Parsi for sure. And if new, you will wonder about the fuss around Bun-Maska (Bun-Butter), Bhurji-Pav (Scrambled eggs-Bread) and Irani Chai (Persian Tea). That is the extent to which the Parsis are part of the cosmopolitan weave of this city. The history of Bombay and the Parsis almost run parallel, with the community making their presence felt since the mid-17th century. Their contribution to the island’s early development, an...

The last of the Zoroastrians

My grandfather had never been a tall man, and now he looked absurdly small, no bigger than a child. Swaddled in off-white sheets like a newborn, with just his head and the soles of his feet visible, his eyes were open and mouth disconcertingly agape, as if in surprise. His corpse was slightly raised from the floor, lain atop a rickety wooden stretcher. Beside the body, three priests in white robes intoned in Avestan, the long-dead language of the Zoroastrian scriptures, as a small fire burned i...

That time Davy Crockett met Bigfoot

Legendary American explorer, soldier, and folk hero Davy Crockett (1786-1836) may be known as the "King of the Wild Frontier," but we all know that title actually belongs to Bigfoot. I hadn't realized that the two actually met in 1835 in Nacogdoches, Texas, a year before Crockett's involvement in the Battle of the Alamo and his death. From Mysterious Universe: Crocket purportedly took a seat upon a log, removing his sweaty shoes and digging into his small rations. As he ate his food, he...

Watch two rehabbed sea lion pups return to the ocean in Palos Verdes

Two sea lion pups were overjoyed recently when their caretakers at the Marine Mammal Care Center set them free in the ocean near Terranea Resort. As soon as the doors to their cages opened, the pups skipped over the rocky shoreline of Rancho Palos Verdes straight to the water’s edge — then frolicked about in the surf for a moment before swimming out past the breakers, according to a video the resort posted on YouTube this week. Two sea lion pups newly released by Marine Mammal Care Center...

(CBS Local/CBS Detroit)- The coronavirus pandemic has made an impact across industries, countries and on the lives of millions of people around the world. 12 Reasons Why I Absolutely Loved Rajasthan

How to begin writing about my life-changing trip to Rajasthan? I’ve spent the past week wrestling with just that, trying to figure out which blog post to write first. I can’t remember taking a trip that blew my mind so much as my three weeks in Rajasthan did, and I’m both speechless and stumbling over sentences in a frantic desire to share just how wonderful this part of the world is.  I absolutely adored my time in India’s desert-filled state.  I think it’s best, then, to focus exactly on that,...

IRS criminal investigators tout 2019 successes, look to year 101's tax crime challenges

Folks who cheat on their taxes to pocket extra dollars are infuriating enough to those of us struggling to do everything right on our 1040 forms. Folks who go to extremes to evade taxes are even more maddening. The Internal Revenue Service, however, has some good news for us here. It's Criminal Investigation (CI) unit is catching and convicting these tax criminals at a commendable rate. A 91.2 percent conviction rate in 2019, to be precise.
