Daveed Diggs: "What to my people is the Fourth of July?"

In this sobering video made for the Movement For Black Lives, Hamilton actor Daveed Diggs asks that we look at what Independence Day really means for Black people right now. It was inspired by Frederick Douglass’ 1852 speech "What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?" and was written by Safia Elhillo, Danez Smith, Lauren Whitehead, W. Kamau Bell, Angel Nafis, Idris Goodwin, Pharoahe Monch, Camonghne Felix, and Nate Marshall. What, to my people, is the Fourth of July? My people, who are failed ...

Illegal Firework Use Skyrockets Leading Up To July 4th Holiday

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – Lighting up the night sky with illegal fireworks has become a popular trend leading up to the Fourth of July, so state and local agencies are cracking down. “I don’t know if this year people are extra bored because of shelter in place orders. The reason they’re illegal is that they’re unsafe,” said Daniel Berlant, with Cal Fire. Over the course of just one week in June, Cal Fire confiscated nearly 50,000 pounds of illegal fireworks. “You could face fines up to $50,000 and ev...

Folsom Sells Out One Of The Only Community Fireworks Shows In The Region

FOLSOM (CBS13) — Friday saw an Independence Day celebration unlike any other in Folsom. The city put on one of the only fireworks shows in the Sacramento region with a Star-Spangled Drive-In event held at Folsom Ranch. The event sold out quickly and provided some much-needed relief for cooped up families. “We actually choose to come to this event because it was designed to be socially distant,” Lindsei Crowder said. A total of 1,250 tickets were sold. One ticket was allowed per vehicle – each fi...

Discovery Park Welcomes Small Crowds To Start July 4th Weekend

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – Small groups of immediate family members spread throughout the beach at Discovery Park Friday. It’s a stark contrast from Memorial Day weekend where the area saw around a thousand people crowding the beach. Sgt. Randy Bickle, a Sacramento County park ranger, said the gatherings were so small, some park rangers were sent home early. “We thought that we would see much larger crowds. I actually had the capability of sending a few rangers home early which is a good thing,” Bickl...

Pets And Fireworks: How To Keep Your Animals Calm And Safe On July 4th

(CNN) — Fireworks explode like magnified gunfire in the exquisitely sensitive ears of many of our pets. Measuring between 150 and 175 decibels, fireworks are louder than gunfire (140 decibels) and even many planes at takeoff (120 decibels). Decibels measure the loudness of a sound while hertz measures the frequency of a sound. Human ears are damaged at a mere 85 decibels. Yet we can hear to only about 20,000 hertz, while dogs can hear between 45,000 and 65,000 hertz. Just think of the physical a...

Canceled Independence Day Events Lead To Explosive Fireworks Sales; Local Groups Reap The Benefits

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – Canceled events around the Sacramento region led to a big boom in business for local fireworks stands as more people try to make their own Fourth of July fun. But this year, this sales explosion means more to organizations behind the booth. In Natomas, Jonathan Koskovich is running his first fireworks stand in years for Victory Outreach South Sacramento, a church organization trying to make up for the loss of funding due to the pandemic this year. “What we make here is going...

Folsom Lake Anticipates Big Crowds Through Holiday Weekend As Counties See Coronavirus Spikes

FOLSOM (CBS13) – The holiday weekend is in full swing at the same time many are living in counties seeing another uptick of coronavirus. Folsom Lake was crowded as early as Friday morning. At one point, Park Rangers had to turn cars away. “I know it’s a big holiday weekend, a lot of people are used to traveling. It’s still not the time to travel far outside your home area,” said Richard Preston, Superintendent of Folsom Lake. Despite that, massive tents full of people from different families pop...

Banned fireworks show still a go in Lancaster, even ‘if they decide to arrest me,’ mayor vows

The Lancaster City Council will hold an emergency meeting Saturday to determine whether to issue a permit for a controversial Fourth of July fireworks display despite a ban on pyrotechnics across Los Angeles County. Mayor R. Rex Parris said Friday he is confident the council will vote unanimously to move ahead with the $30,000 fireworks show, which is set for 9 p.m. Saturday at an undisclosed location on the east side of Lancaster, despite facing the possibility of criminal charges. “If they dec...

Government safety video reminds us that fireworks are no joke

This new safety video put out by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission shows the many ways fireworks can spoil your Fourth of July. But, as you're probably aware, it's good advice for any ol' night these days. In my Bay Area neighborhood, we've been hearing bottle rockets in the morning and M-80s at night. (Don't even get me started on how freaked out my kitty gets with all the loud bangs.) Despite the heavy messages, the video is still a fun watch: - Never allow young children to play ...

4th of July: Divided we stand on everything from flag to heroism

Welcome to the divided states of America. Get ready for an earful. We don’t agree on much in 2020. Need evidence? Just talk for five minutes to your neighbor, or your relatives, or people in line at the grocery store, or people protesting in the street. Ask people how concerned they are about the coronavirus pandemic, or what politicians should do to try to stop it. Maybe the only thing we can agree on is that we have the right to disagree. The Southern California News Group asked myriad people ...

FOLSOM (CBS 13) —  Major firework shows are canceled this year from Sacramento to Manteca, but there are still things you can do to celebrate the holiday weekend at a distance. Despite LA County ban, Lancaster mayor says fireworks show still a go, even if he has to flip switch

Despite urging from Gov. Gavin Newsom and a ban on public fireworks shows across Los Angeles County, the mayor of Lancaster maintained his pledge Thursday that his city will stage July 4 pyrotechnics — even if he has to flip the switch on the display himself. Amid rising numbers of new virus cases and hospitalizations, Newsom tightened up “Safer at Home” restrictions on Wednesday. With O.C. and L.A. beaches closed, forest officials prepare for larger crowds in the mountains for Fourth of July

With beaches closed throughout Los Angeles and Orange Counties because of the coronavirus pandemic, forest officials are anticipating larger crowds in the mountains as people look for ways to get outside for the Fourth of July. But with those larger crowds, officials worry about an increased risk for wildfires. “The grass on these hillsides are very dry,” U.S. Forest Service spokesman John Clearwater said Wednesday as firefighters dealt with the Rowher fire in the Angeles National Forest. “With ...

Newsom Urges People To Avoid Holiday Gatherings

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday urged Californians to turn to their “better angels” and use common sense over the holiday weekend by wearing a mask and skipping traditional gatherings with family and friends. “We’re not going into everybody’s backyard and enforcing,” he said. “We’re just encouraging people to be safe, to be thoughtful about themselves and others.” He also announced a new public awareness campaign, involving billboards, TV and radio ads in multiple languag...

How Americans did the first July 4

If John Adams had it his way, we’d all be celebrating the Second of July. In a letter to his wife Abigail, dated July 3, 1776, Adams predicted that the day the Continental Congress declared independence from Great Britain would go down in history as America’s greatest, and be celebrated accordingly. “It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires, and Illuminations,” he writes, “from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forwa...

Fourth of July: Beach and parking lot closures, big waves, rip currents could make for crazy holiday

Heading to the beach for the Fourth of the July holiday, a time-honored tradition for Southern Californians, will be complicated this year. Some beaches will be closed, some open, and others – like Orange County’s state-run beaches – are shutting down parking lots to try to curb the crowds. The closures and restrictions are meant to limit holiday weekend crowds at the coast, where people cram onto swaths of sand and fill in the streets to celebrate. But shutting down beaches is a complex issue, ...

Fourth of July celebrations are canceled across LA County, but what about safe-and-sane fireworks?

Fourth of July is gonna be a little different this year — because of the coronavirus pandemic. With the number of coronavirus cases and hospitalizations rising, Los Angeles County this week banned all firework shows in an effort to prevent large gatherings, which could further spread the virus. While the lack of professional shows had been settled in many cities already — Long Beach’s fireworks display over the Queen Mary was canceled months ago, for example — the health order officials issued o...

July 4th Could Create ‘Perfect Storm’ For Spreading Coronavirus, Warns Infectious Disease Doctor

(CNN) — As the Fourth of July weekend nears, an infectious disease doctor said the United States could be heading into “the perfect storm” for a spike in new coronavirus cases. “It’s set up a perfect storm: the combination of travel, the combination of reopening — perhaps in some cases, too early — and the combination of people not necessarily following some of these preventive guidelines,” Dr. Joshua Barocas, an infectious disease physician at Boston Medical Center, said during a Wednesday brie...

Doctors Say July 4th Will Be A Tipping Point In Sacramento’s Fight Against Coronavirus

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — The holiday weekend could have a huge impact on coronavirus cases in Sacramento, according to the county health director. Health officials are urging people to keep their distance to prevent more reopening rollbacks. “They want to gather. They really want to gather for any kind of event,” said Aneetray Gaston, a Sacramento resident. Despite fireworks ban, Lancaster vows to hold Fourth of July show

Despite a ban on Fourth of July fireworks displays throughout Los Angeles County, Lancaster city officials plan to defy the order and go ahead with the show at its fairgrounds in the northern end of town, the city’s mayor said Tuesday, June 30. Santa Clarita officials, meanwhile, canceled that city’s July 4 fireworks display, complying with the county’s decree. “Unless the National Guard is knocking on my door, we’re going forward,” said Lancaster Mayor Rex Parris. “We are attempting to talk to ...
