A linguistic League of Nations

Some time ago, a question followed my discussion of sound-symbolic and sound-imitative sl-words (March 13, 2019): “What about slave?” Obviously, as I replied, not all words of a certain phonetic structure belong to the same homogeneous group. Yet ever since, I have been planning to write something about this tricky subject. Slave would not have deserved special attention if it were not so close to Slav. By way of introduction, I decided to devote some space to the use of ethnic names in words an...

Amendments to the Juries Act in Ontario

The current jury system has long been criticized in Ontario, in particular in regards to its diversity and representation. Hints in Ontario’s recent budget suggest some changes are forthcoming. A big part of the reason for Ontario’s problems is that it is jury rolls remain an anomaly in Canada, and are based on specific provisions under the Juries Act. Although the Director of Assessments prepares jury questionnaires based on the provisions in s. 6, based on the inhabitants of the county under s...

Rams free agency review: More departures than arrivals this time around

Compared to their last few offseasons, in which the Rams completely revamped their franchise from top to bottom, Les Snead understands this offseason might seem a bit anti-climactic. There were no blockbuster trades or big free-agent swings. By the Rams’ recent standards, the last few months have been especially quiet. “But I like to say that’s a good thing,” the Rams general manager assured reporters last month, “because all those things have kind of put us in a situation where we’ve got this f...

Ducks’ Prospects to Take First Pro Steps

Just like all NHL teams, the Anaheim Ducks are not entirely made up of players who are, or were once, highly-touted prospects. Ducks fans expect a lot from the new generation of players like Troy Terry, Max Jones and Sam Steel, but there are a couple of skaters, drafted around the same time, who are getting their first pro shifts without much fanfare. Brent Gates Jr. and Steven Ruggiero, both 2015 draft picks, signed amateur tryout contracts (ATOs) with the San Diego Gulls Friday and are experie...

Cam Fowler finds motivation in final games of the Ducks’ lost season

ANAHEIM — Ducks defenseman Cam Fowler refused to call 2018-19 a throwaway season. He wouldn’t write it off as a wasted exercise. He was as angry and frustrated as any of his teammates about the way it unfolded and how the Ducks will spend the summer working to make amends next season. There were lessons to be learned, no question about it. One of the harshest ones was that every shift, every period, every game and every practice matters. For a while, when they were losing 19 of 21 games and cost...

2018-19 Erie Otters: A Season of Pain, Pride and Promise

The Erie Otters fought with everything they had all season. In the end, it was not quite enough to qualify for the OHL Playoffs. With a chance to make the playoffs during the final week of the season, the Otters had four chances to make something happen in the standings. But due to an incredibly difficult schedule which included playing seven games in 10 days, they ran out of gas. Despite falling just short, it doesn’t take away from what the Otters almost accomplished. Consider for a second wha...

Ducks say they have plenty to play for down the stretch

ANAHEIM — Technically, the Ducks remain alive in the Western Conference playoff race. Realistically, they’re out of it and have been since last month. So, what’s left to play for in their final 11 games, including Thursday’s date with the Coyotes in Glendale, Arizona? Pride, for one thing. The Ducks veterans aren’t used to missing the playoffs. “We’re competitive people, so we want to make sure we’re playing as well as we can no matter what time of year and no matter what kind of circumstances,”...

Ducks’ Top 5 Rookie Seasons

With the Anaheim Ducks beginning, at least, a partial rebuild, there’s an increased focus on their rookies. That scrutiny will continue as general manager Bob Murray approaches a crucial draft, possibly with a top-three pick. Anaheim has twice had the No. 2 pick: first in 1994 when they selected Oleg Tverdovsky, and again in 2005 when they picked Bobby Ryan. The Ducks have had players who had fantastic rookie seasons, and not all of them were picked early in the first round. With that in mind, l...

Analysis: A five-step blueprint for the Rams during free agency

The Rams didn’t bother waiting for the open market to make their move. Three days before the NFL’s “legal tampering” window was set to open on Monday, the Rams announced the signing of veteran safety Eric Weddle. Two days after that, on the eve of free agency, the Rams brought back edge rusher Dante Fowler on a one-year deal. The two pre-emptive signings seem to have answered the team’s two most glaring question marks ahead of free agency. But by no means do those moves suggest the Rams are done...

Pass rusher Dante Fowler agrees to new deal with Rams

When Dante Fowler arrived in Los Angeles, following a midseason trade from Jacksonville, he spoke openly of how desperate he was for a fresh start. The first three seasons of his NFL career had been miserable. But as the Rams made a run to the Super Bowl over the four months he’d spent with them, Fowler finally felt like he belonged. The Rams, apparently, felt the same. The team agreed to terms on a new deal for Fowler on Sunday night, answering one of the franchise’s biggest question mark in fr...

Ducks defenseman Cam Fowler finds comfort zone after lineup changes

ANAHEIM — Cam Fowler spent the better part of his nine seasons in the NHL playing his natural spot as a left-handed shooting defenseman. But when the Ducks traded Brandon Montour and Michael Del Zotto at the trade deadline Feb. 25, changes were in order for their revamped defense corps. General Manager Bob Murray acquired Brendan Guhle and then recalled Jacob Larsson from the San Diego Gulls of the AHL, two left-handed shots. Murray didn’t wish to break up his top pair of Hampus Lindholm and Jos...
