In the futuristic science fiction world of Alita: Battle Angel, the population needs entertainment – and they find it in the form of Motorball, a brutal sport in which cyborgs race around a ring chasing after a ball while destroying each other to get it. 20th Century Fox has released a new clip of a few highlights of director Robert Rodriguez‘s action sequence, which features the amnesiac cyborg Alita (Rosa Salazar) absolutely obliterating her competition in front of an electrified audience. Ch...

What Rien Poortvliet Gets Wrong

A couple of things about this terrific drawing by Rien Poorvliet: a working terrier does not actually work this way. The fox is not above ground, and the dog has little or no opportunity to throttle a fox by the neck. Fox either bolt free or to net, or else they present head or tail in the pipe, and there is very little extra room. If faced with head, a useful terrier (i.e., one that can be worked next week as well as this) will stand back and bay. The terrier and fox are dug to, and the fox is...

Fracturing to Survive in Tanya Tagaq's 'Split Tooth'

None In his treatise Why Indigenous Literatures Matter (2018), Daniel Heath Justice (Cherokee) argues that literature is part of a larger struggle across our cultural practices, social formations, and our very selves, to "understand and articulate our humanity." Literature tells stories about people, and indigenous literatures matter because they tell stories about what it means to be indigenous—in a world of one's own people, in a world of settler peoples, in a world with other beings who may ...
