Social Psychologist Erich Fromm Diagnoses Why People Wear a Mask of Happiness in Modern Society (1977) Modern man still is anxious and tempted to surrender his freedom to dictators of all kinds, or to lose it by transforming himself into a small cog in the machine. —Erich Fromm There are more think pieces published every day than any one person can read about our current moment of social disintegration. But we seem to have lost touch with the insights of social psychology, a field that dominated popular intellectual discourse in the post-war 20t...

Facts and Fancy

(from my Goodreads review of by Nicholas Sammond)The overall posture and style of this study are so self-consciously disinterested and relativistic as to read like a caricature of postmodern academic writing. This pastiche has lost not merely its sense of humor but its sense of purpose too. The fear of letting a stray value judgment slip out seems to have stultified the author's analytical capabilities. And yet values per se are largely what the study is about. The superficial irony of this is...

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Brandon Beane joked he would’ve lost a bet on whether the Buffalo Bills would fail to make a trade during the NFL draft. Then again, the Bills general manager wasn’t expecting to draft Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm, either.“I just felt like he was too good of a value to pass up,” Beane said during a video conference call Saturday in referring to selecting Fromm with the 167th pick.Fromm’s addition, however, highlighted the patient approach he took toward the draft, which the Bill...

Report: Jake Fromm impressing teams in interviews

There are many players who have found their effort to move up draft boards hampered by the lack of on-field Pro Day workouts, but players who are building their cases on other aspects of their game may not be as hamstrung. The Summerhill School, the Radical Educational Experiment That Let Students Learn What, When, and How They Want (1966)

Among the political and social revolutions of the 1960s, the movement to democratize education is of central historical importance. Parents and politicians were entrenched in battles over integrating local schools years after 1954’s Brown v. Board of Education. Sit-ins and protests on college campuses made similar student unrest today seem mild by comparison. Meanwhile, quieter, though no less radical, educational movements proliferated in communes, homeschools, and communities that coul...

What the Bears should expect if they pick a quarterback in 2020 NFL Draft

You might be excited if Jacob Eason or Jake Fromm or Jordan Love or Jalen Hurts slip to the Bears with the 43rd or 50th pick in this year's draft, allowing Ryan Pace the opportunity to draft someone who could finally be a long-term fix for Chicago's football bugaboo. The hope and intrigue of Fromm or Love or whoever showing up to Halas Hall with the backing of being a top-50 pick would be fun. The Bears have only picked one quarterback in Pace's five drafts, that being Mitch Trubi...

Malik Zaire: ‘Florida’s Run Defense Will Be Key Against Georgia’

(CBS Local)- The Florida-Georgia rivalry is among the best that college football has to offer, an annual slug-fest dating back to 1915. There have been a few breaks in the schedule here and there, but the teams have met continually each year since 1944. That history, as well as the raucous atmosphere that comes along with a game nicknamed the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party, will be in the spotlight this Saturday, when the teams meet in the SEC Game of the Week on CBS. The pair enter with...

Whicker: Freshman QBs aren’t often plug-and-play, even USC’s JT Daniels

Cincinnati released Matt Barkley on Wednesday. Ohio was much kinder to him, nine years ago. Barkley was USC’s first-year freshman quarterback, from Mater Dei. Pete Carroll thrust him inside the Ohio State horseshoe, in front of 106,033 of the most unmerciful fans in America. It was no country for young men, and Barkley had turned 19 five days before. Yet he gathered the offense with the same no-problem smile that we see from Mike Trout. He took USC on a late-night drive, six minutes and 10 secon...
