Futurama's Bender Turned Into a Belligerent Smart Speaker That's Still More Useful Than Siri

If you’re going to put a smart speaker in your home that disregards your privacy and functions only to rake in profits from you in any way possible, it might as well be a disembodied interactive version of Futurama’s Bender instead of Siri, Alexa, or Google Assistant. “Bite my shiny metal ask me anything.”Read more...

This Zoidberg 'Futurama' quarantine cosplay is pretty great

Hey, when life hands you virii, make cosplay. Zoidberg cosplay. From IMGURian @celestialcosplay, a splendid use of time spent at home, saving lives. Zoidberg is taking the trash out responsibly, and that's nice, but mostly this is about take-out dinner. Futurama forever. Here's my contribution to the Isolation Bin Outing group on Facebook. Except Zoidberg doesn't take bins out, only dinner.

‘Robot’ was coined 100 years ago, in a play predicting human extinction by android hands

The big climax arrives in Act Three. There’s an uprising, as the robots take over the factory that created them. By the Epilogue, humankind is all but extinct. Fed up with their treatment, the robots have laid waste to the hands that created them, sparing only a single human — a fellow worker. The decision may have ultimately doomed themselves, however, as they failed to save the one person capable of proliferating their kind. It is, however, the last living man who finds humanity in a pair ...

The Word “Robot” Originated in a Czech Play in 1921: Discover Karel Čapek’s Sci-Fi Play R.U.R. (a.k.a. Rossum’s Universal Robots)

When I hear the word robot, I like to imagine Isaac Asimov’s delightfully Yiddish-inflected Brooklynese pronunciation of the word: “ro-butt,” with heavy stress on the first syllable. (A quirk shared by Futurama’s crustacean Doctor Zoidberg.) Asimov warned us that robots could be dangerous and impossible to control. But he also showed young readers—in his Norby series of kids’ books written with his wife Janet—that robots could be heroic companions, saving the solar system from cosmic supervilla...

Fans keep going back to “Futurama,” as Matt Groening’s animated series enjoys a healthy life in syndication, 20 years after it began. Disenchantment

I was pretty interested in watching this, even though I can’t say I’ve always been the biggest Groening follower. Sure, I liked the Simpsons back in the day, but haven’t watched any of it in over a decade (at least), and watched bits of Futurama here and there, and liked it enough, but that’s it. As for this, I’ve watched half of the episodes, and, well, I like it enough to watch more. It’s nothing amazing, it’s fun but not incredibly funny (although I absolutely love Elfo), but I find myself...

‘Disenchantment’ Early Buzz: Matt Groening’s Fantasy Send-Up Lacks Magic But Has Potential

After diving into suburban family life and the distant future with The Simpsons and Futurama, animation icon Matt Groening is bringing his trademark humor into the distant past with his fantasy comedy series Disenchantment on Netflix. But does Groening, whose shows have lost their bite in later seasons, even for longtime fans, have what it takes to head into new territory and create something refreshing? Or are we looking at a similar run of jokes in a premise that isn’t quite living up to its ...

Matt Groening goes back to the drawing board for ‘Disenchantment’

“I tried walking around in a Homer mask, but the latex is hard to breathe in. My head gets so sweaty and my glasses fog up. It’s not worth it for me,” Matt Groening laughs. “But what a way to go, suffocating on a Homer Simpson mask.” The cartoonist bemoans his inability to go incognito on a recent trip to San Diego Comic-Con. It would be a poetic death, perhaps, asphyxiating beneath the likeness of his most iconic creation. But he doesn’t want to make the headline writers’ jobs too easy when ...

‘Disenchantment’ Teasers Introduce the World and Characters of the Animated Fantasy Comedy

Disenchantment, Netflix’s latest animated comedy from The Simpsons creator Matt Groening, made a big splash at the San Diego Comic-Con with the debut of the first trailer. Matt Groening, creator of The Simpsons and Futurama, heads to Netflix with Disenchantment, a very-funny looking new animated series set within a fantasy realm. ‘Disenchantment’ Trailer: ‘The Simpsons’ and ‘Futurama’ Creator Matt Groening Heads to Netflix

Matt Groening, creator of The Simpsons and Futurama, is headed to Netflix with Disenchantment. 6 Times Satan Was Actually the Good Guy

Usually, movies and TV shows paint the Devil with rather broad strokes. He might be charming, but make no mistake: He’s invariably there to cause pain, snatch souls, impregnate housewives, challenge violinists and guitarists to musical duels, etc. But every once in awhile... Satan can be a pretty awesome guy.Read more...
