Gun safety: ASK for kids’ sake

Twenty-two years ago, I survived a shooting at Garfield High School. A student brought his grandfather’s unsecured gun to school, and I was caught in the spray of bullets. Seite Books.

I came across a reference to Seite Books and wanted to know how the name was pronounced, so I googled up this LA Times article from 2014 by Hector Tobar and was immediately hooked: When Adam Bernales and Denice Diaz started Seite Books in a little storefront in East Los Angeles, a lot of people thought their taste in books was too highbrow. What We Don't Learn About the Black Panther Party—but Should

By Adam Sanchez and Jesse Hagopian Fifty years ago this month, the Black Panther Party was born. Its history holds vital lessons for today's movement to confront racism and police violence, yet textbooks either misrepresent or minimize the significance of the Black Panthers. The first issue of the Black Panther newspaper, which at its height had a weekly circulation of 140,000 copies, asked, "WHY WAS DENZIL DOWELL KILLED?" Helping Dowell's family demand justice in Richmond, California, was on...

brand book bites from onward

In lieu of my usual Brand Book Bites format, I wanted to share my favorite excerpts from Onward: How Starbucks Fought for Its Life without Losing Its Soul, the book Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz wrote in 2012 to memorialize the remarkable turnaround at his company after he returned to the helm in 2008. I recently re-read the book (for purposes that will become clearer later…yes, that was a teaser) and was struck by the way the company’s recovery was driven by a singular, clear, and focused com...
