Dieter Rams Lists the 10 Timeless Principles of Good Design–Backed by Music by Brian Eno

Nearly all of us have heard the dictum "Less, but better," and nearly all of us have used Braun products. But how many of us know that both of those owe their considerable popularity to the same man? After studying architecture, interior decoration, and carpentry, the German industrial designer Dieter Rams spent 40 years at Braun, most of them as the company's chief design officer. There he created such hits as the 606 universal shelving system, the SK61 record player, and the ET66 calculat...

Why ‘Rams’ Director Gary Hustwit Doesn’t Want Studios to Buy His Films

Most filmmakers dream of scoring a big studio deal, but not Gary Hustwit. The “Helvetica” director applies a “do it yourself” model to the release of his movies. “Rams,” his recent documentary about German industrial designer Dieter Rams, is Hustwit’s latest venture into self-distribution. “I don’t want to be paying someone else’s overhead,” said Hustwit. Behind the Scenes of RAMS: An Interview with Director Gary Hustwit and Mark Adams of Vitsœ

If you work in design, study design, or even if industrial design is on your radar in any capacity, you are likely familiar with the work of Dieter Rams. Known for his time designing iconic products for Braun and later Vitsœ, Rams' 10 Principles of Design have garnered him a top spot on the list of most influential industrial designers of our time. We won't give too much of Rams' design story away, as director Gary Hustwit did the work for us with his new feature-length documentary, RAMS, which ...

2018 International Design Conference Recap

The IDSA conference is an annual affair bringing together a community of designers, educators, students and experts all connected by their commitment to the field of industrial design. The 2018 edition, reborn as the International Design Conference, represented a complete rethinking of this yearly tradition, where the organizers applied their design skills to redesign the whole experience. I'm happy to report that their efforts were a success, with many attendees commenting on how this was their...

From an architect’s exhibit of paintings in London to a coveted collection of bath textiles, here’s what is on our collective radar this weekend. Above: Photograph from Midcentury Modern Mashup: At Home with a Rising Design Star in LA. Kitchen island or no kitchen island? After Michelle’s piece on the matter, the rest of you weighed in. Simple Dieter Rams prints

I really like these prints for Rams, Gary Hustwit’s upcoming documentary about the legendary Dieter Rams. Each print features an object designed by Rams or his design team: the T41 radio, the ET66 calculator, the 620 chair, and the 606 shelving system. PS. You can still buy the calculator from Braun. Ok, it’s a reissue, but that means it won’t cost you 100s of dollars on eBay. Tags: design   Dieter Rams   Gary Hustwit   movies   Rams [Author: Jason Kottke]

Finally! Dieter Rams Documentary by Gary Hustwit is On the Way

Dieter Rams appears sparingly in Gary Hustwit's "Objectified" documentary on product design. Perhaps that was for the best, as Hustwit's now working on a dedicated feature-length documentary on Rams, where we'll get to hear about his philosophies, processes and inspiration in-depth. Hustwit has released three teaser trailers: Rams - Teaser (Less and Better) from Film First on Vimeo. Rams - Teaser (Objects) from Film First on Vimeo. Rams - Teaser (Simplicity mic drop) from F...

Rams, a documentary about legendary designer Dieter Rams

Dieter Rams is one of the world’s most influential designers. Rams acolyte and Apple design chief Jony Ive has said of him: Dieter Rams’ ability to bring form to a product so that it clearly, concisely and immediately communicates its meaning is remarkable… He remains utterly alone in producing a body of work so consistently beautiful, so right, and so accessible. Gary Hustwit, director of Helvetica and Objectified, is making a documentary about Rams called Rams. Here are three short clips fro...

Graphic Designer Redesigns a Movie Poster Every Day, for One Year: Scarface, Mulholland Dr., The Graduate, Vertigo, The Life Aquatic and 360 More

No scene in a movie counts for as much as its opening, but even before its first frame passes through the projector, its poster has already made the real first impression. This remains basically as true in the era of digital cinema as it was when film actually passed through projectors. But while filmmakers only occasionally go back and retool their past works — not that the experience of, say, George Lucas and the original Star Wars trilogy vouches for the practice — film posters ...

Minimal Graphic Design: 5 Great Typography Designs

4 min read When there’s nothing you can take away from the picture, the picture is perfect. In a nutshell, that’s what a minimalist design is all about. Both artists and enjoyers of art love it for its refined cleanness and smooth execution, while web designers use it for its effortless readability. Though grids, negative spaces, divine proportions and visual balance create a framework for its aesthetics in architecture, it’s typography that translates it into a compelling graphic design....
