Pigs get the birthday treatment at Gentle Barn in Santa Clarita

It was not your traditional Easter outing, we’ll say that. But tell that to a wide-eyed 8-year-old child who after an egg hunt would be perfectly fine with getting to know some special pigs, with some special oinks and requisite tummy rubs. A hen checks in on Zeus, an 800-pound pig, on her birthday during Easter day Sunday at the Gentle Barn in Santa Clarita. Using art, Paper Earth Fair in Tarzana offers vision for trash-free world

Sunny day. Arts, crafts, food, music. Earth. Local people enjoy Sunday’s Paper Earth Fair in Tarzana. It was organized by 11:11, a San Fernando Valley-based art collective. Is criticism of Israel the same as anti-Semitism? Jewish and Muslim communities spar over the difference

Outside the Hilton Hotel in Woodland Hills, on Saturday, March 23, a crowd of nearly 1,000 had gathered to protest newly elected Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minnesota. “Reject Ilhan’s bigotry,” screamed one banner. Some carried American and Israeli flags. Protesters from Jewish and conservative groups rally outside the Hilton hotel Saturday late afternoon March 23,2019. The protesters don’...

Greeted by protests, Rep. Ilhan Omar tells LA-area Muslims to ‘raise hell’ in face of ‘human rights’ violations

Freshman Congresswoman Ilham Omar of Minnesota urged some 400 Los Angeles-area Muslims packed inside the Woodland Hills Hilton on Saturday to stand defiant and “raise hell” in the face of discrimination they confront as Muslims in America. It’s advice the politician appears to have adopted as her own strategy, as this appearance — a fund-raising event hosted by the Council on American-Islamic Relations — came just weeks after her comments sparked national controversy and exposed a generational ...

As LA Unified pushes new legal bid to postpone strike, parents and teachers make their picket signs in North Hollywood

On a street corner in North Hollywood, dozens of LAUSD elementary school students held handmade picket signs and chanted “Class size matters” or “We support teachers” to honking passersby on Sunday, as the teachers union said that its Jan. 10 strike date may be prolonged to Jan. 14 by a new legal offensive filed by the district. “UTLA goes to court proactively this week to scuttle his third attempt at an injunction, based on a disingenuous claim that UTLA did not give sufficient notice of our in...

Notre Dame, Simi Valley, Birmingham boys soccer win holiday tournaments

NEWHALL >> Notre Dame defender Matthew McGonigle had a score to settle with Hart High’s boys soccer team. His was being outplayed, and the tension was even greater between two teams that played less like common opponents and more like bitter rivals. Eight yellow cards were issued, but it was Notre Dame which kept its composure in the end to defeat Hart 4-1 and avenge a loss to the Indians on the same field three weeks ago.
