Can the Yankees still win the World Series without Luis Severino?

The New York Yankees started the day as the favorite to win the American League and a good bet to win the World Series. Then came the two words that no baseball team wants to hear this time of year: Tommy John. The team announced Tuesday that Luis Severino, their ace before Gerrit Cole signed a $324 million contract and came to town, needs Tommy John surgery and will miss the entire 2020 season.

Gerrit Cole begins spring training pumping high-90s heat

It was just one inning, but newly-signed Yankees starter Gerrit Cole made his Yankees debut last night. And he looked pretty good doing it. Cole struck out two and walked one over a hitless inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates, pumping gas like it was the middle of the season.

Yanks' Cole strikes out 2 in hitless inning of spring debut

Gerrit Cole struck out two and walked one over a hitless inning in his spring training debut for the New York Yankees against Pittsburgh on Monday night. Cole's first pitch to Adam Frazier was a 97 mph fastball. After Frazier popped out and Bryan Reynolds struck out, Cole Tucker drew a walk.

NHL great Bowman says Yanks' Boone right to expect a lot

Yankees manager Aaron Boone is embracing the enhanced high expectations after the addition of ace Gerrit Cole to his 103-win team. Nine-time Stanley Cup-winning coach and baseball fan Scotty Bowman agrees with the approach. ''He had a good young team last year and they're all back, and now they added,'' Bowman said.

Cole starts Yankees tenure with questions about Astros

On the day of his first formal workout with the New York Yankees, Gerrit Cole talked about what he did and did not know about the Houston Astros. Houston was disciplined by Major League Baseball for breaking rules by using a video camera to steal signs during its run to the 2017 title and again during the 2018 season, the first after Cole was acquired from Pittsburgh. New York lost to Houston in the AL Championship Series in both 2017 and against last year.

Dodgers’ trade for Mookie Betts, David Price is finally official

LOS ANGELES — They spent the winter big-game hunting and finally bagged their prey. Gerrit Cole wanted to be a Yankee, the Dodgers said, and not even their $300 million could change his mind. Anthony Rendon wasn’t interested in the “Hollywood lifestyle” that comes with playing in Los Angeles, he said himself. Stephen Strasburg didn’t want to leave Washington. Francisco Lindor would have cost more than money and the Dodgers wouldn’t part with Gavin Lux and Dustin May to land him. But they did lan...

Dodgers reassert superpower status with blockbuster Mookie Betts deal

Just when it looked like the Los Angeles Dodgers were out of possible moves to make in trying to improve a team that both won 106 games last year and somehow disappointed, the Boston Red Sox decided it was time to pack things up for 2020 and deal away one of the best players in baseball. After whiffing on Gerrit Cole, and Anthony Rendon, and Stephen Strasburg, and a number of other major free agents, the Dodgers completed a trade to acquire 2018 AL MVP Mookie Betts, plus left-handed starter Davi...

As the Dodgers head toward the first workout of spring training on Feb. 14, we are providing breakdowns of how they stand with difference aspects of their roster. Up first, the starting rotation: 2019 RECAP For the second time in the past three seasons, Dodgers starting pitchers had the lowest ERA in MLB. Second-year right-hander Walker Buehler had a solid follow-up to his rookie season despite a slow start, finishing 14-4 with a 3.26 ERA and flashes of brilliance like a 16-strikeout game agai...

Inside the Dodgers: How Jimmy Nelson may help the pitching staff

Editor’s note: This is the Tuesday, Jan. 7 edition of the Inside the Dodgers newsletter. To receive the newsletter in your inbox, sign up here. The question was there at the beginning of the off-season: how would the Dodgers fill out their starting rotation between now and spring training? It gained steam when Gerrit Cole signed with the Yankees. It gained more steam when Hyun-Jin Ryu signed with the Blue Jays, then more when Rich Hill signed with the Twins. I first deployed the analogy of ste...

Future sign: Cole arrives with old placard of Yankees fealty

On his first day in pinstripes, Gerrit Cole admitted to stealing a sign - no, not those signs. Cole affixed his signature to a record $324 million, nine-year contract at 10:45 a.m., walked into a news conference at Yankee Stadium and pulled out the crinkled placard he took to one of New York's World Series games at Arizona in 2001. A newspaper photo from Game 6 or 7 shows the 11-year-old holding the placard reading: ''Yankee Fan Today Tomorrow Forever.'' Cole brought the...

Yankees can void Gerrit Cole’s decision to opt out of contract

The Yankees introduced new ace Gerrit Cole at a press conference on Wednesday as their record nine-year, $324 million contract was finalized. The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal reported a previously unreported detail about Cole's contract: if Cole opts out of his contract after the 2024 season, the Yankees can choose to void his decision if they add one more year and $36 million to the back end of the deal. Cole, 29, will be entering his age-34 season when the decision comes, with Four years...

Cole on $324M, 9-year deal with Yankees: 'It was my dream'

Gerrit Cole brought along a sign for the news conference to announce his signing with the New York Yankees: a crinkled poster board that read “Yankee Fan Today Tomorrow Forever." Then 11, Cole was caught on camera holding up that placard in the seats at the 2001 World Series in Phoenix, either before Game 6 or 7. The lettering of the tape he used has faded from blue to tan during years on the wall of his room and then in a closet.

How much might Zack Wheeler cost? And would that price tag be too steep for White Sox?

The White Sox are rumored to be in pursuit of free-agent pitcher Zack Wheeler. And though he might not be grabbing the same kind of attention that's going to Gerrit Cole and Stephen Strasburg - the Cy Young types at the tippy top of this winter's free-agent market - he'd be a high-quality upgrade to the South Side starting staff. The question is whether what's expected to be a hefty price tag would be too steep for the White Sox.

Cubs free agent focus: Gerrit Cole

Cole is a bonafide ace, a true No. starter and one of the best starting pitchers in Major League Baseball. The Cubs are familiar with the 29-year-old from his NL Central days, as he played for the Pirates from 2013-17.

MLB free agency: Would Gerrit Cole be right fit for Giants this year?

The Giants have used Buster Posey as a recruiter in recent years, but if they go after the best pitcher on the market this offseason, they'd be better off turning to another longtime member of the team's core. As you have surely heard by now, Brandon Crawford is Gerrit Cole's brother-in-law, a connection that is enough to have many fans dreaming of bringing Cole, a runner-up in the Cy Young balloting this year, back to California. The right-hander is represented by Scott Boras -- ...

A look at the Angels’ payroll now that the free-agent market is open

The free-agent season officially opened Tuesday, which means Angels fans can officially start salivating over Gerrit Cole and any number of other players who they believe can help stop the team’s four-year streak of finishing with a losing record. But first, it’s important to understand the Angels’ payroll. So, here’s the definitive explainer of how to do to the math. For starters, the Angels insist their payroll is always based on their revenues, not the luxury tax. So it’s not right to view th...

Gerrit Cole, Anthony Rendon among 10 players to receive qualifying offers

The deadline for Major League Baseball teams to extend qualifying offers to eligible free agents passed at 5 p.m. ET Monday. In total, 10 players were extended the offer, including postseason stars Gerrit Cole of the Houston Astros and both Anthony Rendon and Stephen Strasburg of the Washington Nationals. Worth noting, it's the first time since the qualifying offer system was instituted eight years ago that the value of the offer actually dropped.

Angels decline Kole Calhoun’s option, making him a free agent

Kole Calhoun’s tenure with the Angels is one significant step closer to being over. The Angels declined Calhoun’s $14 million option for 2020 on Monday, instead paying him a $1 million buyout. Calhoun is now a free agent, so he could still re-sign with the Angels at a lesser salary. At this point it’s unclear if either side would be interested in such a reunion. Calhoun, 32, had been preparing himself for the end of his Angels’ tenure since before the season ended. After the final game of the re...

Early 2020 World Series odds don't give Twins much respect

There are a lot of ways to interpret the various sets of "way-too-early" World Series odds for 2020 that popped up almost as fast as Gerrit Cole declared his free agency after Game 7 Wednesday. But I think it's revealing to see the Twins so relatively low in both online odds and Westgate odds. In the former, per Sports Betting Dime, the Twins sit at just 35 to 1 to win the World Series — 13th among all teams, a whole bunch of whom finished worse than the Twins last season since, you know, they h...

Gerrit Cole to Giants in MLB free agency? Mike Krukow is all for it

Gerrit Cole likely will be the most valued free-agent pitcher Major League Baseball has ever seen. Just about every team with the budget to do so will be breaking out the checkbook in pursuit of the 29-year-old. One team that has been linked to Cole for several reasons is the Giants, and San Francisco broadcaster Mike Krukow is exuberant about the potential of seeing Cole in a Giants uniform.
