Jimmy Nelson’s long road back could lead to Dodgers bullpen

GLENDALE, Ariz. >> In early September 2017, Jimmy Nelson was one of the better young starting pitchers in the National League, a sturdy 28-year-old about to be 12-6 with a 3.49 ERA in 29 starts for the Milwaukee Brewers. And then, he wasn’t. Nelson was spinning a shutout four innings into a Sept. 8 start at Wrigley Field. With one out in the top of the fifth, Nelson lined a base hit into left field, rounded first base hard then thought better of it and scrambled back to first base, diving with h...

'Politically Correct, Progressive Bull—': Aubrey Huff Says Giants Excluded Him Due to His Support of Trump

The San Francisco Giants will be celebrating the 10-year anniversary of their winning the 2010 World Series with a reunion this summer, but one of the key players from the championship team won't be there. Former Giants first baseman Aubrey Huff was disinvited because of some tweets that the team's management decided were offensive and, he said, politically incorrect. Huff, now 43, led the Giants in home runs with 26 and in runs batted with 86 during their 2010 championship season.

Giants prospect Sean Hjelle shines, lights up radar gun in spring debut

With the Giants nursing a one-run lead in the eighth inning Sunday, manager Gabe Kapler called right-handed prospect Luis Madero into the game. As Madero faced the A's, Sean Hjelle started warming up in the bullpen. Kapler saw Hjelle getting loose and called down to make sure he knew he was getting the ninth, not part of the eighth.

Joey Bart, Mauricio Dubon hit homers in Giants' spring training opener

The Giants waited nearly three hours for the rain to clear Saturday so they could get their Cactus League opener in, and it was worth it when a couple of young hitters stepped to the plate against the Dodgers. Mauricio Dubon went deep to left with his first swing of the spring, and four innings later Joey Bart also smashed a homer to right with his first swing of 2020. Dubon showed surprising power as a rookie, hitting four homers in 104 at-bats after his promotion from Triple-A. He said he has ...

Giants' Mike Krukow has no sympathy for Aubrey Huff, says he 'blew it'

You can add Giants broadcaster Mike Krukow to the list of people who have no sympathy for Aubrey Huff after the former first baseman was informed that he would not be welcome at Oracle Park for the celebration of San Francisco's 2010 World Series championship team this coming August. "I think that Aubrey Huff blew it, and I think him not being included is something he needs to take to heart," Krukow said Tuesday on KNBR's "Murph & Mac Show." "I don't think it's going to affec...

Buster Posey reacts to Giants not inviting Aubrey Huff to 2010 reunion

For two members of the 2010 Giants championship team, the trip to this summer's reunion won't be far. Pablo Sandoval and Buster Posey still are here, and they'll be greeting old teammates -- almost all of whom long ago retired -- as the Giants celebrate the group that finally brought a title to San Francisco. The Giants told their former first baseman that he will not be invited to the ceremony.

The Giants aren't shunning Aubrey Huff because of his politics, it's because of his words

The San Francisco Giants are hosting a family reunion this August to honor their 2010 World Series-winning team, and they've chosen the latter option with Aubrey Huff … which has, in turn, played out exactly as expected. “Earlier this month, we reached out to Aubrey Huff to let him know that he will not be included in the upcoming 2010 World Series Championship reunion,” the Giants said in a statement. Declaring himself “shocked” and “disappointed,” he criticized the Giants' “political...

Meet the urban planner responsible for San Francisco's car-free Market Street

Downtown San Francisco is putting pedestrians first by turning the 2-mile Market Street, a major hub for the city, into a completely car-free space. Inhabitat spoke with an urban planner of the esteemed Perkins and Will for more details about the groundbreaking, pedestrian-friendly project. While the complete redesign is expected to extend into the rest of the year, January 29 marked the official ban of cars on the thoroughfare. Giants say they won't include Aubrey Huff in 2010 World Series reunion

The Giants do celebrations and nostalgia better than anyone, and quite a bit of time will be devoted this season to looking back at the 2010 team that finally brought a title to San Francisco. The Giants have told Aubrey Huff, the starting first baseman on that team, that he is not welcome at the ballpark when they celebrate the 2010 championship. San Francisco Giants are putting up zeroes, using Nos. 0, 00

When San Francisco added speedy outfielder Billy Hamilton with a minor league deal earlier this month, equipment manager Brad Grems called the league to make sure there's a difference between the two — because new first base coach Antoan Richardson aleady had claimed 00. He's good with stuff like that,” shortstop Brandon Crawford said Monday of Grems' due diligence. Given the Giants have 11 retired numbers with their long list of Hall of Famers and 13 coaches and a pair of bullpen...

Bret Bielema interviewing for Colorado job

Giants assistant coach Bret Bielema might have been interested in the Michigan State job, but he's interviewing for the vacancy created by the guy who actually got it. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Bielema is interviewing for the Colorado head coaching job. That's the one that came vacant when Mel Tucker bolted for Michigan State.

Bay Bridge Spanned: A’s, Giants Make 1st Trade Since 1990

MESA, Ariz. (AP) — The first baseball trade in almost 30 years between two teams separated only by a bay and a bridge happened Saturday when the San Francisco Giants and Oakland Athletics completed a deal. In a move to add experience to their bullpen, the A’s got right-hander Burch Smith from the Giants for cash. The last time Oakland and San Francisco made a trade was on Dec. 4, 1990, when the Athletics acquired outfielder Ernest Riles from the Giants for outfielder Darren Lewis and minor leagu...

Giants, A's end trade drought, make first deal together in 16 years

The rivalry has thawed, kind of. The Giants sent right-hander Burch Smith to the A's on Saturday morning in exchange for cash considerations, marking the first deal between the two Bay Area teams since 2004, when the Giants sent pitcher Adam Pettyjohn to the A's for cash. The Giants designated reliever Burch Smith for assignment earlier in the week when they added Jarlin Garcia, but this is the kind of deal that people on both sides have been on the lookout for since Farhan Zaidi joine...

How Gabe Kapler made impact on Tyler Beede before coming to Giants

Before just about every one of those games, there was a young kid or a pack of them leaning across the rail, hoping for a quick photo or an autograph. Occasionally, the kid would be bold enough to ask for a baseball, or perhaps a few pieces from the tubs of bubble gum in every dugout. This has been part of Kapler's life since he was drafted 25 years ago, as common an occurrence as pulling on his spikes or lining up for the anthem.

Dodgers troll Giants with Max Muncy vs. Madison Bumgarner homer bobblehead

Giants fans still could have a fresh memory in their minds of a ball that landed in McCovey Cove off the bat of Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Max Muncy last June. The home run itself wasn't what made fans cringe, but the exchange between Muncy and Madison Bumgarner sure will. Muncy smacked the solo bomb that traveled 426 into the water and pimped out the home run with a pointing action.

Random Excellence: Giants?

Might call this "random interest" rather than excellence, but it's curious. You might want to look at the picture carefully before reading on. We were talking about the novel Giants in the Earth the other day, and I ran across the old snapshot above on a site called Ipernity. The original poster, Alan Mays, was given it as a Christmas present. A few different elements conspire to create a visual illusion. The small size of the tractor and the boy driving it, the looming hill in the background, ...
