Guest Post: Gina Baynham

I first came upon Corey‘s blog in 2007 accidentally as I sat in my kitchen in Australia helping my 7-year-old daughter to research a school project. The link Google brought me to was a story about gold bead necklaces  traditionally gifted to young girls in Marseille to mark special occasions as they grew up. I was captivated. For a brief moment I was unaware of my messy kitchen, the pile of laundry waiting to be done,  and young kids running around asking me to do things for them. I came b...

‘The Real Housewives of Orange County’ have a renewal of vows and a tequila surprise

I’ve learned many things from “The Real Housewives of Orange County.” Money can’t buy good taste or manners, for one. Too much tequila can lead to skinny-dipping (in truth, I first learned that on my 30th birthday). And, after this week’s episode, this: When you renew your vows, never, ever let a 14-year-old boy offer his own version of your vows for the ceremony. Sound The gallery will resume in seconds Show Caption of Expand Housewife Braunwyn Windham-Burke an...

Coronavirus Update 11-9-2020: COVID-19 and no-fault attendance policies

Can you "point" an employee under a no-fault attendance policy for a coronavirus-related absence? For example, an employee sick with COVID-19 or awaiting test results, quarantined because of an exposure, or at home because a child needs care? For the uninitiated, no-fault attendance policies operate by having workers accumulate "points" for missing work, arriving late, or other attendance-related issues; after the accumulation of a pre-determined number of "points," employees face discipline or e...

The Real Housewives of Orange County slam tequila and Braunwyn’s struggle with sobriety

The conclusion of the two-part “I Am Braunwyn W.” played out on “The Real Housewives of Orange County” on Wednesday, with Braunwyn Windham-Burke’s quest for sobriety appearing as admirable as her friends’ response to it has been insensitive. To refresh your memories from the first half of this storyline a week earlier: Braunwyn, who was seen drinking enthusiastically through her debut season on “The Real Housewives,” kicked off the season premiere this year by announcing that she is an alcoholic...

Is ‘The Real Housewives of Orange County’ dealing with alcoholism storyline responsibly?

Is “The Real Housewives of Orange County” still fun for you? Superficially, sure. On some level, let those of us pure enough not to laugh at privileged people acting like spoiled toddlers throw the first skinny margarita in someone’s face. Shannon Storms Beador decides to ruin her housewarming party over some small slight and we laugh. Kelly Dodd says this week’s jaw-droppingly naughty thing and we roll our eyes. Braunwyn Windham-Burke hurls a drink to the floor as she storms off, and here we go...

Goddess Figure Candle

As human as these artfully detailed candles are, no one could fault you for seeing something of the divine in them. Handmade by Dowa Doneye, each candle captures both the natural beauty of the female form and its sacred essence. Dowa has crafted three distinct body types (Gina is the fullest, followed by Bré, then Tolani) to reflect the sensuous reality of women's bodies and to share a message of positivity and inclusion. Each comes in three colors. Sculpted from pure beeswax for its subtle, nat...

The Real Housewives of Orange County show that sharing is caring – and kind of scary

Like a spirit who isn’t ready to pass over into the other realm, Tamra Judge, who’s no longer a regular on “The Real Housewives of Orange County,” just won’t disappear. That might say something about a decline in back-stabbing or gossip-spreading among the cast on Season 15. Or maybe it’s a factor of the coronavirus-shortened season. But the Big Fight this week involves Housewives Braunwyn Windham-Burke and Gina Kirschenheiter after Tamra tells Braunwyn something Gina told her. Gina and Housewif...

Coming-of-Age Set to The Smiths - 'The More You Ignore Me' Trailer

"It was like you were singing… just to me." Mental illness, Morrissey and guinea pigs. Vega Baby US has released a new trailer for the indie dark comedy coming-of-age film The More You Ignore Me, a spunky 80s flick from England that already opened there a few years ago. Adapted from Jo Brand's novel and set to the songs of The Smiths, The More You Ignore Me is a darkly funny coming-of-age story of dysfunctional family life in the 1980s. The film focuses on Gina, a young mother, whose efforts...

The real story of how the violent, drug-fueled ‘Goodfellas’ became a gangster classic

Martin Scorsese’s “Goodfellas” is not just an iconic gangster movie; it’s an all-time classic and a pop-culture touchstone that’s packed with one memorable scene after another, whether it’s that minutes-long shot tracking Ray Liotta’s Henry Hill and Lorraine Bracco’s Karen Hill through the bowels of the Copacabana club or Joe Pesci’s terrifying Tommy DeVito asking ominously if Henry thinks he’s “funny like a clown.” It’s also a film that Glenn Kenny, a veteran film journalist, has re-watched reg...

Comment on mom’s apple cake by Gina

This is so similar to the “Jewish Apple Cake” recipe my mother made and passed down to me. She (and I) subbed apple cider for the orange juice and brown sugar for the white in the apple mix. The big difference is that we slice the apples rather than chop them, and both layers of apples are inside the cake. I’ ll try your chopped apple version. This cake has become a required element of our family Thanksgiving.

How a pioneering brain surgery helped a man who'd been addicted to opioids for 18 years find sobriety

The opioid epidemic claims about 128 lives every day in the US. But doctors are hoping a risky type of brain surgery can be used to treat addiction and put a dent in that number. We followed one former opioid addict of 18 years who found sobriety after undergoing the surgical procedure, known as deep brain stimulation. Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. Gerod Buckhalter believes a pioneering brain surgery is his last hope to overcoming his addiction to opioids. Brand...

Wagner's treaty warning to the Tories

Boris Johnson’s attitude to international law inspires Wagnerian comparisons from reader Graham Bould, while Dr Anthony Isaacs urges Gina Millar to intervene. Mark Stallworthy says the row has exposed Suella Braverman’s shortcomingsFurther to letters (10 September) regarding the Tories’ disregard for the rule of law, I am reminded of the fate of Wotan and the other Germanic gods as told by Richard Wagner. ‘Real Housewives of Orange County’ reveal new housewife, October season premiere date

The 15th season of “The Real Housewives of Orange County” returns to Bravo on Wednesday, Oct. 7 for a season filmed before and during the coronavirus pandemic of 2020. That’s not the only big change for the new season either. Vicki Gunvalson and Tamra Judge — two legendary housewives, which is a term they did not know to teach us journalism school — are no longer on the show. Attempting to fill those stiletto heels is Elizabeth Lyn Vargas, a soon-to-be-divorced Orange County transplant who house...

One Aim for the Next 100 Years of the 19th Amendment: More Women in All Levels of Public Office

August 26th 2020, Women’s Equality Day, will mark the 100th anniversary of the certification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. On August 18, 1920, Congress ratified the Amendment. Today, Virginia Sapiro (BU, Department of Political Science) and I published this column in BU Today’s Point of View, arguing that, on the 100thanniversary of the 19th Amendment, a critical priority before we mark the next significant anniversary should be increasing political representation by women—par...

Coronavirus Update 7-29-2020: SAFE TO WORK Act would offer employers a significant shield from employee COVID-19 lawsuits

Earlier this week, Senate Republican introduced their $1 trillion COVID-19 economic stimulus package. Among other proposals the bill contains the SAFE TO WORK Act [pdf], which would provide employers a significant shield from liability for lawsuits related to coronavirus exposure by requiring gross negligence or willful misconduct that actually causes a personal injury before liability could attach.  Employers would receive significant protections from employment-related COVID-19 lawsuits br...

In reply to Gina L.. Some people stir it back into the greens, but I do not. You could add it to soups, too; it’s great in bean soups, and classic in split pea.
