Bergevin Was Right to Trade Galchenyuk for Domi

At times, you may end up being right for the wrong reasons. The ends justify the means, though. That’s the situation Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin finds himself in a half-year after acquiring Max Domi from the Arizona Coyotes for Alex Galchenyuk. Domi vs. Galchenyuk As Domi and the Canadiens prepare to face Galchenyuk’s Coyotes ahead of the All-Star break, a quick glance at the stats reveals a seemingly lopsided trade in favor of the Canadiens. Galchenyuk has half of Domi’s ...

Oilers Could No Longer Justify Keeping Chiarelli

On April 24, 2015, the Edmonton Oilers hired Peter Chiarelli to serve as their president of hockey operations and general manager, becoming the sixth individual in that role since the Oilers joined the NHL in 1979. Chiarelli was generally well regarded at the time, having won a Stanley Cup with the Boston Bruins in 2011 and reaching another Stanley Cup Final with the team in 2013. The Oilers were certainly excited to have him, with CEO Bob Nicholson noting that “a person of Peter Chiarelli’s cal...

GM Plant Workers Allege Racist Acts Continue Even After Lawsuits

It comes after years of racist language on the assembly line, scrawled slogans and swastikas on the restroom walls and nooses suspended in the workplace, as well as misogyny, according to the lawsuits. “GM downplays this and says it is a few isolated incidents, but it’s not,” said Michelle Vocht, a Michigan lawyer representing eight employees at the plant who are suing GM, alleging a hostile workplace. The company does take the complaints seriously, spokesman David Caldwell said.

GM’s 2.7-liter Pickup Engine Comes Up Short in Real-world MPG Test

You’ve read no shortage of commentary about General Motors’ new truck engine on these digital pages — from the 2.7-liter four-cylinder‘s impressive on-paper power figures (310 hp, 348 lb-ft), to the continuing rivalry between GM and Ford, to the rather slim fuel economy gap separating it from its eight-cylinder stablemates. Shoshana Zuboff discusses her new book, "Surveillance Capitalism"

Ever since academic Shoshana Zuboff coined the term "Surveillance Capitalism" in 2015, it's become a touchstone for the debate over commercial surveillance (we've cited it hundreds of times). This week, Zuboff published her (very thick) book on the subject, to excellent early notices; I haven't read it yet, but it's next on my list. Though I'm familiar with the general shape of Zuboff's argument, I'm really eager to get to grips with the specifics, and to see how it's evolved over the last ...

Oilers & Talbot Need More From Each Other

With the focus on so many other aspects of the Edmonton Oilers’ roster this season, and with fans clamoring for a GM change after getting a coaching change, the impact of goaltending has been somewhat overlooked. Take the Oilers’ significant run of success, going 7-2-1 from when Ken Hitchcock took over as head coach on Nov. 20 until Oscar Klefbom’s last full game in the lineup on Dec. 9. During those 10 games, Oilers goaltenders posted seven quality starts, well above the league average this sea...

It’s worth keeping an eye on Detroit, where longstanding GM Ken Holland has a year remaining on his contract after this season with former Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman poised as his successor. Yzerman, 53, is an obvious Seattle choice, given he built a Tampa Bay Lightning franchise – much of it under then-CEO Leiweke – currently leading the President’s T...

Look for Seattle NHL team to hire a GM this summer rather than next

Everyone who's telling you that Tesla is influencing the rest of the auto industry is completely wrong (TSLA)

Tesla is routinely considered to be influencing the traditional auto industry. Tesla has exerted some influence, but it has been relatively modest in the grand scheme of things. Auto executives are too busy dealing with real business problems to worry about Tesla — and if Tesla did become truly influential, the traditional industry could quickly develop and sell millions of electric vehicles. If you follow Tesla and the company's endless flurry of news, non-news, rumor, innuendo, and Twitteri...

GM’s Side Airbags Are Still Crashing the Party
