Lowry banks big on confidence after grittiest round: "I had to go right the bottom of the well for that one”

Shane Lowry hits his tee shot on the first hole during the final round of the 100th PGA Championship held at Bellerive Golf Club on August 12, 2018 in St. Louis, Missouri. (Photo by Montana Pritchard/PGA of America) Shane Lowry banked much more than a cheque for €1.04 million in the Arabian Desert on Saturday — he rediscovered his confidence and stashed some away for major days to...

Long Shot Cashes in at Desert Classic

Adam Long holed a 14 foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole of The Desert Classic Sunday afternoon that changed his life. In so doing, he rained all over Phil Mickelson’s victory parade and likewise put a damper on Adam Hadwin’s bid for his second win on the PGA Tour. “It was one of those putts that you just stand over and you know that you’re going to make,” he told Golf Channels George Savaricas in a post round interview.… Continue Reading →

2020 Volkswagen Golf Spotted at German McDonalds?

Despite the 2020 Volkswagen Golf arriving later this year, VW hasn’t done much to tease it. In fact, the only glimpses we’ve had of it were of the Sasquatch variety — unconfirmed, low-resolution images taken in the wild before the elusive creature vanishes. There’s now another one. Last week, Instagram user johannes.vag captured a couple of […] The post 2020 Volkswagen Golf Spotted at German McDonalds? appeared first on The Truth About Cars.

Tiger Woods paired with Xander Schauffele and Tony Finau at Torrey Pines, other featured groups revealed

Tiger Woods' 2019 debut will have a familiar setting, but feature an unfamiliar pairing. The PGA Tour announced on Monday the 14-time major champ will be paired at this week's Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines with Xander Schauffele and Tony Finau on Thursday and Friday. Although, both players have climbed into the top 10 of the Official World Golf Ranking, neither have ever played an official round with Woods before.

Vokey adds Slate Blue Finish Option to SM7 Wedge Lineup

The one-year refresh on products with 2-year lifecycles is all the rage right now. If it’s chrome, PVD is the standard play (unfortunately). But how do you keep it fresh when black is already in the lineup? If you’re Vokey, the answer is Slate Blue. Good answer. The latest iteration of Vokey’s take on blue found its way into the lineup in limited form last fall with the release of the Wedge Works 60° T Grind. Beginning January 31st, the finish will be available across the entire Vokey SM7 line...

Rickie Fowler talks about his switch to TaylorMade's TP5x golf ball

Rickie Fowler has won four times on the PGA Tour and amassed more than $34 million in career earnings. Now in his 10th full season on the PGA Tour, Fowler is making a monumental shift in his equipment, changing to TaylorMade's TP5x ball (the number 15, in homage to his motocross days) in a multiyear agreement that also will have him wearing the company's Tour Preferred Glove. Fowler spoke with Golf Digest's equipment editor E. Michael Johnson on the process of making the switch, t...

Tiger Woods embarks on another 'sophomore' season, hoping its better than the first one

Hype and hope, if they're not siblings, are at least first cousins, separated only by a vowel, but otherwise indistinguishable in the case of Tiger Woods, 2019. There are no metrics to measure hype, so with Tiger preparing to make his 2019 debut at the Farmers Insurance Open this week, his first tour start since winning the Tour Championship, we are left to gauge it with the ear test, and what we're hearing sounds not altogether different than it did in 1998. Former Golf World editor J...

First Look – PING G410 Plus and G410 SFT Drivers

The PING identity is rooted in MOI, forgiveness, and a no trade-off mentality that doesn’t allow for advancement in one area if it diminishes performance in another. It’s the reason why PING seldom, if ever, takes a step backward, or even sideways with new products. It’s a mindset that all but guarantees that a new PING product will outperform what came before it. That commitment, however, brings with it its own trade-off. The unfortunate reality of the modern world is that consistency and depen...

First Look – 2019 Ping G410 Irons

PING’s G-Series is the proverbial bread and butter of its iron line up. It’s the one-ski quiver which sits at the top of the bell curve and offers players a forgiving distance iron with more precision and consistency than some might expect out of a game-improvement iron. Ping’s i500 iron is a player’s iron with distance attributes while the G700 is the most forgiving model PING offers. The G410 sits in between these two. Contrary to some of its competitors, PING tech talks tend to limit fluff an...

First Look – PING G410 Fairways and Hybrids

Without compromise. That’s PING’s anthem and guiding design principle when evaluating whether new product is ready for market. The challenge is to take a step forward in all major performance areas without taking any steps, even small ones, backward. As a result, it’s fair to consider PING as perhaps the most cautious and calculated of the major OEMs – and that’s not a bad thing.    Shiny, sparkly and highly caffeinated product releases aren’t exactly its modus operandi. As such, with PING’s G4...

First Look – 2019 Ping G410 Crossover

The original PING Crossover was famously not a driving iron. Two iterations later, is the G410 version a driving iron? Well, mostly. On the hybrid-driving iron continuum, PING’s G410 Crossover tilts more closely to the nebulous “driving iron” label than the two previous Crossover editions. That said, PING is billing this version as one which looks, feels, and fits like an iron, but retains the most beneficial characteristics (forgiveness and ball speed) of a hybrid. For those familiar with the...

First Look: Srixon Z-Forged Irons

Never mind most of us aren’t anywhere near good enough to play them, but good gravy a nice set of blades can make your nether-regions do the Ball Striker’s Rumba all day and all of the night. Blades are the true eye candy of the golf world, and serious golf companies are measured by how sleek, sexy and downright gorgeous their blades are. Srixon has blades, so by definition, it’s a serious golf company. How serious depends on how sleek, sexy and gorgeous you find their new Z-Forged irons. My hu...

Phil Mickelson lives up (or down) to his reputation as 'a fabulous enigma'

Phil Mickelson is the official ambassador of the Desert Classic, which could not ask for a more accommodating host, his generosity extending to a putter that helped orchestrate the least likely outcome the PGA Tour might see this season. Adam Long emerged from obscurity on Sunday and won the Desert Classic and Mickelson lost it, the least recognizable player in the field beating the most recognizable player, and who could have envisioned either of those happening? Give Long credit.

Evil on the Golf Course

Last September the golf world was stunned when a young, talented golfer was savagely murdered on the golf course. Celia Barquín Arozamena an Iowa State student and former Big 12 Player of the Year was attacked while playing a solo round on one of the colleges home courses, Coldwater Golf Links in Ames, Iowa. To an eastcoaster Ames, Iowa sounds like small town America with farms, familes and brings to mind cornfields, friendly neighbors and the “Field of Dreams” question:… Continue Reading →

Golf Swing Lesson: A Slow Backswing Doesn’t Hurt Your Golf Swing Speed

Salt was musing at how nearly every high handicapper he met was obsessed with their golf swing speed.  They wrongly equated a slow backswing with a slow golf swing.  Nothing could be further from the truth. Just them Salt saw a curious gentleman in the distance. Or rather, he heard him. He was pounding drivers on the range, one after the other. He could hit the ball a long way indeed. Sometimes he would carry his drives 250 yards, very long for an amateur. Salt was watching him hit ball after ba...

Phil Mickelson shook off the rust of his winter hiatus from golf with a scintillating 60 at the LaQuinta resort course in his 2019 season debut.
