Google Lens Can Now Recognize a Billion Items

Google said in a blog post that its AI-powered "Google Lens" camera tool can now recognize over a billion items. When it launched last year, it was only able to detect around 250,000 items. The Verge reports: The expansion comes over a year after the Google Lens' optical character recognition engine has been trained on reading more product labels. By recognizing text, Google Lens thus can put names to the faces of more goods. It has also been fed more data from photos taken by smartphones, so Go...

Google still claimed to be blocking search rivals on Android, despite Europe’s antitrust action

Mobile licensing changes made by Google this fall, when it tweaked terms for OEMs wanting to license its Android smartphone platform on devices destined for the European market, don’t appear to be offering succour to search rivals — despite being triggered by an antitrust ruling intended to reset the competitive playing field. The European Commission found the search giant guilty of anti-competitive practices related to its Android platform this summer, slapping the company with a $5BN ...

Amazon is gobbling up 'significantly' more Google ads than ever during the holiday season — and it reveals a change in the e-commerce giant's strategy

Amazon is spending more on Google's text-based ads than it has the past couple of years during the holidays, according to new data from Merkle. This could signal a shift in Amazon willing to pump more money into Google earlier in the fourth quarter to drive important holiday sales. While Amazon is beefing up its investment in Google's text-based search ads, it is not investing the same amount in coveted Google Shopping ads, possibly because Amazon competes with Google in this area. Amazon is ...

What Do You Do When You Lose Organic Traffic to Google SERP Features?

Posted by Emily.PotterGoogle’s increasing dominance of their own search engine results pages (SERPs) has kicked up a lot of panic and controversy in the SEO industry. As Barry Adams pointed out on Twitter recently, this move by Google is not exactly new, but it does feel like Google has suddenly placed their foot on the accelerator: I find it hilarious that SEOs are suddenly annoyed that Google is aggressively taking over some verticals with in-SERP features. They’ve been doing that for years.Wh...

Analyst Colin Sebastian says that Google has begun to offer deep discounts on shopping ads in Europe.  The reduced prices could lead to as much as a 3% decline in ad revenue, according to Sebastian. Last year, the EU found that Google had tweaked its search engine to favor the company's comparison-shopping service.    Google is slashing the prices of its shopping ads in Europe an...

Amazon needs to take on Waymo to keep its crown as the king of retail, Morgan Stanley says (AMZN)

Waymo, Google’s  secretive self-driving car project, could offer retailers an inexpensive way to compete with Amazon's Prime Now, Morgan Stanley cautioned. Amazon's innovation focus and shipping volume make it "one of a few players who could compete with Waymo," the Morgan Stanley team says. Watch Amazon trade in real time here.
