DJI is out-GoProing GoPro with its own action camera

For a brief time, DJI and GoPro were partners — or at least uncomfortable allies. Way back in 2014, the companies were joined together with the intention of building a drone designed to capture athletes in motion. It must have seemed like a perfect piece of synergy from two players at the top of their respective games. Of course, things didn’t shake out that way. The best laid plans and all that. GoPro went all in on its own drone, but Karma’s launch was wobbly, to say the least. Sixteen days...

How the Crown of Thorns Arrived at Paris

Except in the Bible, the Crown of Thorns is not mentioned by any writer during the first four hundred years. It is supposed to have been hidden, but St. Paulinus, bishop of Nola (409-431), speaks of its existence as a well-known fact. St. Gregory of Tours is, however, the first to speak explicitly of it. About the year 800, the patriarch of Jerusalem sent to Charlemagne a Nail, a piece of the Cross, and some of the Thorns from the Crown. These relics were given to the Abbey of St. Denis by C...

Teens drop eloquent climate change testimony on Congress

There's a brand new committee in the U.S. House of Representatives -- the Select Committee on the Climate Crisis -- and the group used its first-ever hearing to call on four young environmental leaders to testify. Their age is particularly relevant, as these youthful citizens are destined to experience the worsening consequences of a globally disrupted climate. Two of the witnesses were teenagers, including 18-year-old Aji Piper, a plaintiff in the ongoing "children's climate lawsuit." Pi...

Edodoi.

From Lev Oborin’s FB post I learned about a delightful phenomenon, the spread via graffiti of the enigmatic word едодой [edodoi] across the streets of Krasnodar and then via social media throughout the Russian-speaking world, even turning up in the US scrawled next to a Trump Tower. There were plaintive tweets like “Так, а вы знаете, кто такой ЕДОДОЙ? Почему он везде пишет?” [So, do you know what this EDODOI is? Why is it written everywhere?] One person suggested it might be an ad for a pizza ...

DE Randy Gregory, who is suspended again, gets extension from Cowboys

Cowboys get Randy Gregory for cheap in 2020 According to Pelissero, the Cowboys converted $310,000 of Gregory's 2019 salary into a signing bonus, and added another year for $735,000 with escalators possible. At least it's cheap. If the Cowboys looked at Gregory's latest suspension as a chance to add another season at a low rate, there's some business sense behind it.

The British Library has returned three rare historic documents that had been illegally removed from the Panagia Chrysopodaritissa Monastery in Achaia in 1979. This Artist Turns Old Pocket Watches Into Miniature Steampunk Worlds, And The Result Is Fascinating

Greek artist Gregory Grozos is on a quest to prove that watches can do much more than just tick. They can fit entire worlds inside them. “I call my creations ‘miniature worlds’ because that is what I exactly aim them to be,” Gregory writes. “I try to make each work as detailed and complete as a tiny world would need to be in order to be called a world.” More: Source

Best doughnuts from around the world

Food isn’t, and never has been, limited by borders or boundaries. The things we eat travel as we do, flying across oceans and into the cultures and diets of their new homes, adapting along the way. But there may be no single food item that’s made its way into every corner of the world quite like the doughnut. Fried dough has been consumed for long enough to be found as fossilized pieces at ancient Native American sites. These days, it’s everywhere in one variation or another. In fact, forms o...

The SBC’s New Castle and the Wall

It’s been 31 years since Joel Gregory’s famous “The Castle and the Wall” sermon at the 1988 Southern Baptist Convention (SBC). As the illustration goes, Lord Londonderry owned a castle in Ireland with fine stones that the local villagers began pilfering in order to rebuild broken roads and buildings. Prior to an extended trip, Londonderry gave orders to his agent to enclose the castle with a well-coped wall, six-feet in height. Londonderry arrived several years later to find his castle had disap...
