Dave Grohl Plays Drums Along with the Original Recording of Smells Like Teen Spirit

At an event for the release of his recent memoir, The Storyteller, Dave Grohl got behind his drum kit and played along with the original recording of Smells Like Teen Spirit. You might notice that Grohl grimaces a bit right at the beginning — this is maybe the first time (or one of a handful of times) he’s played this song with Kurt Cobain’s vocals since Cobain died. From the video’s description: It probably wasn’t easy for DG to get to this point where he was willing to share. At the show ...

Dave Grohl Falls Offstage & Breaks His Leg, Then Continues the Show as The Foo Fighters Play Queen’s “Under Pressure” (2015)

How do you make the show go on after a broken leg? The blessing we give performers before they go onstage isn’t something we actually want to see happen. Nonetheless, stage injuries occur frequently, and in some cases, severely, as when Patti Smith fell 15 feet into a concrete orchestra pit in 1977 and broke several vertebrae in her back. “I felt like an asshole,” she told Circus magazine, “but my doctor told me not to worry, it happens to everybody.” Maybe not everybody, but when th...

After falling off the stage during a concert and breaking his foot back in 2015, Dave Grohl performed subsequent gigs from a giant motorized throne. The following year, Grohl’s former foe Axl Rose borrowed the throne after suffering an injury of his own. Apparently that throne is still around because Grohl just leant it to another musician this week.

Dave Grohl has finally performed live with his nemesis, 11-year-old British drummer Nandi Bushell. He wrote a theme song for her and she wrote a song for him. And last night, at Foo Fighters’ concert at the Forum in Los Angeles, Grohl invited her to the stage to help close their set out with a performance of “Everlong....

Dave Grohl Tells the Story of How He Wrote “Everlong”

Dave Grohl, like many rock musicians, does not come from a classically trained background. Instead he has an ability to write according to what sounds good, and where noodling around in the studio can bring great rewards. That’s where The Foo Fighters’ best song “Everlong” originates. In this 2020 clip from Oates Song Fest, Grohl tells the story of “Everlong,” and how it came to him in the studio one day in between working on the band’s second album. It started with a chord. “I’m not...

Ahead of the 10th Foo Fighters album, their frontman recalls the music and scenes that made him – from punk gigs in Chicago to sleeping on floors in Italian squatsBefore I was a teenager, I started playing music in my bedroom by myself. I fell in love with the Beatles, then began to discover classic rock. I went from Kiss to Rush to AC/DC, but in 1983 I discovered punk rock music through a cousin in Chicago. Foo Fighter Dave Grohl, formerly of Nirvana, and Nandi Bushell, an Ipswich elementary schooler, have something in common besides their incredible command of the drums. By all appearances, both seem to have benefited from being reared by grounded, encouraging parents. Nandi, at 10, likely has a few more years under her folks’ roof despite her growing renown—she’s jammed with Lenny Kravitz, gone viral in last year’s Argos Christmas advert, and most recently, matched Grohl beat for beat in ...
