Solar Orbiter Blasts Off to Capture a First Look at the Sun’s Elusive Poles

(CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla.) — Europe and NASA’s Solar Orbiter rocketed into space Sunday night on an unprecedented mission to capture the first pictures of the sun’s elusive poles. The $1.5 billion spacecraft will join NASA’s Parker Solar Probe, launched 1 1/2 years ago, in coming perilously close to the sun in order to unveil its secrets. While Solar Orbiter won’t venture close enough to penetrate the sun’s corona, or crown-like outer atmosphere, like Parker, it will maneuver into a unique out-...

Stephen Hawking's voice is being sent to a black hole light-years from Earth

Stephen Hawking's voice is speeding through space.  The famed cosmologist, who passed away in March at the age of 76, always dreamed of flying to space, and now, his voice is on a journey through the cosmos. Greek composer Vangelis, best known for composing the theme for the film Chariots of Fire, created an original score that reportedly spans six and a half minutes and features Hawking’s own voice halfway through.  SEE ALSO: Time travelers are invited to Stephen Hawking's memorial s...

Gaia creates richest star map of our Galaxy – and beyond

A multitude of discoveries are on the horizon after today’s much-awaited release, which is based on 22 months of charting the sky, as part of Gaia’s mission to produce the largest, most precise three-dimensional map of our Galaxy ever created. The new data includes positions, distance indicators and motions of more than one billion stars, along with high-precision measurements of asteroids within our Solar System and stars beyond our own Milky Way Galaxy. Preliminary analysis of this phen...

ESA launches world's first mission to explore the "atmospheres of hundreds of planets"

Behold a brand new era of space exploration. The European Space Agency (ESA) just selected the Atmospheric Remote-sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large-survey (ARIEL) mission from three candidates to launch what Nature describes as the “world’s first space telescope dedicated to studying the atmospheres of exoplanets.” The four-year, $552 million will launch on the Ariane 6 rocket in 2028. The agency said we’ve found thousands of exoplanets with a massive range of sizes, masses, and orbits, but we ...
