McCoy Tyner: Inception

McCoy Tyner should receive as much attention as Thelonious Monk, Oscar Peterson and even Bill Evans. For some reason, he doesn't, and I have no idea why not. Tyner's recordings are as inventive, as rich and as stunning as the other three piano leaders. Of course, Peterson and Monk came up in the late 1940s, and Evans came up in the 1950s, so they had a jump on him. Tyner's trio leadership career didn't begin until the early 1960s. I can't think of another pianist who best reflects the '60s than...

Boundaries: the Good Friend of Every Parent

During my son’s senior year of high school, he and a few of his friends had a rather telling conversation with their choir teacher, one my son later relayed to me. In the course of their chat after class, someone asked this teacher – who is young, smart, and beloved by students and parents alike – what she thought was the biggest problem she sees in teens these days. According to my kiddo, she didn’t sit on the question too long. “From my vantage point,” she said, “It seems many parents want to ...

Coachella 2020: These are the famous chefs cooking the festival’s splurge meals

Reservations are open for Los Angeles celebrity chef Roy Choi’s pop-up restaurant at the 2020 Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival at the Empire Polo Club in Indio April 10-12 and 17-19. The pop-up is Best Friend, Choi’s tribute to the LA food scene that has a permanent home at Park MGM in Las Vegas. The menu isn’t available yet, but Open Table describes the fare as “Korean BBQ to grain bowls, kimchi to spaghetti, adolescence to adulthood, dinner to munchies, hip hop to bibimbop.” Open Table d...

‘Fantasy Island’ Review: Stay Far, Far Away From Blumhouse’s Horror Getaway

Fantasy Island, the late ’70s/early ’80s TV series that made the catchphrase “The plane! The plane!” wildly popular, heads to the big screen thanks to the fright masters at Blumhouse. As is their want, Blumhouse has warped the show into a horror movie – a move that’s not entirely unprecedented. The original show had plenty of supernatural elements – there was even an episode featuring the Devil. And the old adage of “be careful what you wish for” has been exploited time and time again for scary...

Prince Harry begs forgiveness, the Queen shops Prince Andrew to the Feds, and Kirstie Alley’s secret life, in this week’s dubious tabloids

In previous episodes the dying Queen snubbed wife-killing son Charles and gave the Crown to grandson William, Harry and diva Duchess Meghan were exiled to Canada, and scandal-plagued Prince Andrew was imprisoned in the Tower of London. This week, as the Royal world turns, Prince Harry admits: “I’ve made a terrible mistake. Please Take Me Back!” reports the cover of the ‘National Enquirer.’ Harry, banished to the former colonies for having rebelled against the straightjacket of Royal life, has a...

Long Beach Opera’s cartoon treatment of Purcell’s ‘King Arthur’ is an ill fit

When an opera company makes the decision to radically update a creation from the past and superimpose a stridently pointed contemporary political message, that company is entering risky territory. However, when it works, as Long Beach Opera has consistently shown that it can, the result is a brilliant musical mirror on the past that offers a sharply focused reflection of our present condition. But when it goes wrong, as it does in LBO’s cartoon super-hero treatment of Henry Purcell’s 1691 creati...

20 Years Ago, ‘Galaxy Quest’ Offered One of Cinema’s Most Positive Portrayals of Dedicated Fandom

The nascent days of the Internet brought with it a recognizable and often critical depiction of fandom in popular culture. The most familiar representation of the modern fan comes courtesy of The Simpsons , with its obese Comic Book Guy character. Arguably, that’s also one of the more insulting depictions of fans, as the otherwise unnamed Comic Book Guy is unnecessarily obsessive, snide, immature, lonely, and virginal. But fandom takes many forms, and one form celebrates its 20th anniversar...

Move over Blake Shelton, John Legend is the new star on 'The Voice'

Last week on The Voice, there was a torch-passing of sorts, as incumbent coach Blake Shelton, People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive of 2017, revealed during the live results telecast that the panel’s newest coach, John Legend, had just been named Sexiest Man Alive of 2019. The moment may have been symbolic in ways Blake hadn’t even realized.  Blake has always been the most popular coach in Voice history. Last season, in fact, The Voice was so dominated by Team Blake that this supposed favoritism r...

'The Voice' recap: Night Four of the Battles takes an emotional turn

Before we get into tonight's Battles, we still have that little matter of one Mr. James 'The Hair' Violet choosing if he will take Gwen Stefani's save and remain with his original coach, or if he'll defect and move over to Team Legend. Everyone, including the very vocal crowd, knows the best move for James is to join Team Legend. Unlike many 20-year-old kids too handsome for their own good, James makes the smart decision. Over to Team Legend it is! This means Gwen has no...

'The Voice' recap: Steals are making things very difficult for Team Gwen

It's back to The Voice Battle Rounds. You know, that time in the season when we're reminded of everyone's touching story and about how much they want this and then watch as almost half of them are booted off. The good news is that we get another episode with the team advisors, who are excellent this season: Normani's on Team Kelly,'s Team Gwen, Team Legend has Usher on board, and Team Blake's got Darius Rucker. That's a real lineup there, people. To t...

Link Dump

Just clearing the baffles before embarking on this year's Six Weeks of Halloween horror movie marathon with some interesting links from the internets: 90 Branzinos Later: The Story Behind The Amazing Spider-Man’s Awkward Dinner - The amount of work that goes into a single shot of a bad movie is still pretty amazing (and far more impressive than most criticism of said bad movies, including mine). Consider the branzino. The Spider-Man scene originally called for Peter to be unnerved by the fish’...
