Hackett’s Still in Bill Ford’s Good Books

We told you the other day about Ford CEO Jim Hackett’s latest attempt to placate employees who might hold reservations about the company’s streamlining plan and their leader’s vision for the future. One individual whose […] The post Hackett’s Still in Bill Ford’s Good Books appeared first on The Truth About Cars.

A top Wall Street auto analyst just called out Ford for falling behind GM. But there's nothing wrong with second place. (GM, F)

Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas published a research note contrasting GM's and Ford's prospects. He rightly touted GM for its leadership and execution. But he underestimated Ford's tenacity and experience being No. 2 in the US market. On Thursday, as the media-and-Wall-Street aspects of the Detroit auto show were winding down, Morgan Stanley auto analyst Adam Jonas published a research note in which he praised General Motors' business and leadership and made some accurate — yet harsh — poin...

Ford, Volkswagen Talks Heighten the Possibility of Broad Alliance

Amid the whirlwind of trade intrigue that involves everything from stock market gyrations to the future of America’s relationships with China and the European Union, an interesting hookup between companies and brands may be forming: a broad alliance between Ford and Volkswagen. Each company is beset by individual problems—Ford with some evident rudderlessness under CEO Jim Hackett and an inability to improve in Europe, VW with CEO roulette and the vestiges of Dieselgate, among other things—and b...

Everton & Arsenal fans told why Son Heung-Min’s penalty was correct even though there was no contact

Everton & Oumar Niasse Everton fans will forever have a bee in their bonnet regarding Oumar Niasse. Just over a year ago, Oumar Niasse was hit with a two match ban for a dive against Crystal Palace. In a 2-2 draw at Selhurst Park, Niasse was charged by the FA after he “exaggerated the effect of a normal contact” to win a penalty. The ban came after the FA introduced a new law into football to try to combat such acts of cheating. Remember when players were going to banned if they dived and succ...

Ford CEO frankly admits that the car of the future is a surveillance device that you pay to spy on you

The era of finance capitalism is marked by a curious shift in the desire of the business world: to get out of the business of making things people use, and into the business of getting money for owning, extracting and/or liquidating things. The thing is, this isn't a good strategy. Not only did the drive to build up financial institutions themselves precipitate the financial crisis (tanking Lehman Brothers in the process, and bringing the rest to the brink of extinction, forced to beg for g...

USC football mailbag: Did Athletic Director Lynn Swann drive coaching staff changes?

USC enters a new reality. As much as its football program has had ups and downs in the aftermath of the Pete Carroll era and proceeding NCAA probation, hamstrung by the erratic tenures of Steve Sarkisian and Lane Kiffin, it still always seemed to be a ways away from the brink of a tailspin. Sure, there was the Sun Bowl finish of 2012, but even then, the Trojans stood 6-2 at the end of October and ranked No. 18 in the Associated Press poll. They finished 7-5 in the regular season, 7-4 with Matt B...

Canyon Swinging in Cairns: Conquering My Fear of Heights

Updated: 10/30/2018 | October 30th, 2018 I hate heights, which is something a lot of people find ironic, considering how often I fly. But anyone who has flown with me before knows that I’m a bit of a nervous flier. Any bump in the air and I grab onto the seat until my knuckles are white. While I’ve gotten a bit better over the years, I still won’t even go near ledges or cliffs and, if someone does manage to get me up an observation tower, it takes me about ten minutes to walk toward the glass. ...

Kasich Tells Summit That Ohio Won't Be a "Right to Work" State While He's Governor

Gov. John Kasich talked about one of his favorite subjects – partnering with community colleges to develop workers’ high tech skills – as he opened the Midwestern Governors Association workforce summit Wednesday. He also talked about what he said won’t be changing when it comes to Ohio’s workforce. Eight of the 12 midwestern states are so-called right to work states, which ban requiring that workers pay union dues as a condition of employment. But Kasich – who was a key backer of the collective ...

Ford CEO Hackett Crafts a Bold Vision, Now Must Deliver

Ford Motor Co. CEO Jim Hackett is revered as a tech-oriented visionary from his days of running office furniture-maker Steelcase, and he’s been putting together big plans for the No. 2 US automaker since Bill Ford Jr. himself installed Hackett at the helm in the spring of 2017. So far, it’s clear that Hackett’s bold plan for Ford includes bringing the company into a leadership position in two crucial areas of technology that are dictating much of the future of the industry: electric vehicles an...

Ford's decision to eliminate passenger cars and concentrate on pickups and SUVs is paying off (F)

Ford posted US sales gains in August even as the overall market has flattened or declined. Ford pickup trucks and SUVs drove the gains. Ford made a strategic decision to all but eliminate passenger cars from its portfolio in coming years. Ford reported August US sales on Tuesday, and although the market has been weakening compared with 2017, the automaker's tally was up about 4% versus a year ago. The story was all about pickup trucks and SUVs, vindicating a decision that Ford, under CEO Jim...

Plastics proliferation transitioning to bioplastics boost

IHS Markit published a plastics report saying that the market value for biodegradable polymers exceeds $1 billion and will rise sharply by 2023 thanks to increased plastic regulations and bans in Western Europe. But it’s not just Europe that we are seeing bans on plastic. Multinational companies like Kraft, Starbucks, McDonalds, Marriott, Disney and more are all jumping on the anti-plastic bandwagon as consumers demand more responsible action from their favorite brands and products. And it’s no...

Trump has 3 months to avoid sending the auto industry into a downturn (GM, FCAU, F)

All three major US automakers have lowered their full-year profit forecasts for 2018. Trump's trade wars and tariffs are hurting the business both in the US and China, the world's two biggest markets. The auto industry has been predicting a downturn, but GM, Ford, and FCA might have sent a unified signal to Trump that if changes aren't made fast, the slide could arrive ahead of schedule. Hackett’s Much-needed Stock Boost Is Nowhere in Sight

It’s generally agreed that former Ford CEO Mark Fields was shown the door after failing to turn around the company’s steadily declining stock, but his successor hasn’t had any success on that front, either.
