Ray Hadley spars with Peter Dutton over coal-fired power stations – video

The Sydney radio presenter accuses the home affairs minister of ‘toeing the company line’ for not wanting to put taxpayers' money towards fossil-fuel generation. Infuriated at Dutton’s position, Hadley yelled: ’You’re saying, "No, I don’t agree with building a coal-fired power station." Well, where do the Queenslanders get base-load power? Where do they get it?’ Dutton said the government should not be in the business of building such power stations and questioned whether it should even pay towa...

9 Nail-Polish Colors That Are Basically Spring Break In A Bottle

Ah, spring break. Even if you've been out of school since 2011, there's something universally nostalgic about the idea of taking a full ten days off of real life to jet off somewhere warm and sunny with your friends. The realities of 2019 spring break may be less than glamorous — maybe you're carpooling home to see mom and dad, or stuck somewhere frigid — but you can still feel the vibes with a fresh mani-pedi.Before polish indecision sets in and you reach for classic black, consider one of the...

Robert Willig, RIP.

Right after my wife and I moved to this neck of the woods, I made the rounds of the local bookstores, and my hands-down favorite was Troubadour Books, then in North Hatfield, just across the river; I wrote about my first visit back in 2007, featuring its generous and knowledgeable owner, Bob Willig. A few years ago I posted that Sam Burton of Grey Matter Books would be running the store (now in Hadley), since “Willig is blind and has been in bad health.” And this morning I was saddened to read...

Miami signs Australian Louis Hedley, potentially the coolest punter ever

National Signing Day doesn't officially kick off until Wednesday, but the Miami Hurricanes got an early jump. The Hurricanes officially signed punter Louis Hedley on Tuesday night, as Hedley lives in Australia and it's already Feb. 6 there. Hadley redshirted in 2018 while at the City College of San Francisco, and averaged 38.6 yards per punt in 2017.

Billingham Bags

I know, I know, what David Paterson said...in the last Featured Comment on the previous post...but I can't help one more comment about bags. And that is to point out that any time you get a lot of use out of something, you win. I circle back around to writing about Billingham (here's their website, which has the least informative "About Us" page I've ever encountered) every few years. I put Billingham in the "High-Status Luxury Veblen-Good brands" category in my Guide to Bag Brands. However, Tre...

Leading the round is Goldman Sachs, with participation from a number of unnamed private investors. Operating in the cyber security training space, Immersive Labs helps enterprise IT and other cyber security teams acquire the latest security skills by combining up to date threat data with what is describes as “gamified” learning. JENSEN MADE - Hadley's Custom Cigar Box Ukulele

Thirteen years ago when our daughter Hadley was born, I wanted to celebrate her birth and purchased a box of Arturo Fuente Hemingway Short Story to hand out cigars to friends.  It didn't take too long before the twenty-five cigars were gone and the box was filled with mementos of Hadley's birth.  This little cigar box was placed in my wife's hope chest where it likely would have stayed if it had not been for connecting with Kristopher Jensen about a year ago.  I was selling a few fiberglass fly ...

Will shakeup in race to lead California’s GOP push party closer to Trump?

A big tent candidate’s withdrawal from the race to be chairman of the California Republican Party is widely seen as a lift for rivals who would try to rebuild the state GOP in the image of President Trump. It might not work out that way, exactly. But David Hadley’s decision to quit his campaign to lead the struggling state party does shake up the contest, in which Trump supporters Travis Allen and Steve Frank are the only other declared candidates so far. Hadley, the California GOP vice chairman...

I should have written this sometime in September but life went a little sideways along with me being gone for ten days to Italy with my wife (I know, humble brag...).  I figured that I'd get it done in October but work went into overdrive and we were gone almost every weekend camping with family and friends.  Good excuses, right?  November and December have been kinda a blur at work and home.  I've been off for Christmas and will be until New Years and I'm finally getting a chance to knock out a...

Election 2018: As midterm results sink in, politicos see a ‘divided’ country and clashing interpretations

In the end, what was it all about? The same words keep coming up when political experts and activists of various ideological stripes look back at the 2018 election and talk about its broad themes — what divided the nation, motivated voters, and led to Democrats’ gains: Trump. Partisanship. Demographic change. Trump. Balanced government. Campaign tactics. Money. Women…. Trump. Before the Nov. 6 midterm election, the Southern California News Group asked activists, party leaders, campaign pros and ...

Lin-Manuel Miranda: ‘A Trump musical? I don't know how to score that yet’

The crown prince of Broadway talks politics, Hamilton and Mary Poppins Returns. By Hadley FreemanI spot Lin-Manuel Miranda half an hour before our interview, strolling through the New York hotel where we have arranged to meet, bouncy as a puppy, cocky as a rooster. I had been a little worried about his mood, because earlier he had tweeted to his 2.5 million followers that “my kids slept VERY little last night” and that he was “grumpy/hangry”. But no man has looked less grumpy/hangry in the histo...

Shift to Neutral: LA Jewelry Designer Kathleen Whitaker’s Radical Transformation

When we interviewed Kathleen Whitaker, the notable LA jewelry designer, four years ago about her turn-of-the-century home in LA’s Echo Park, she summed up her DIY remodel this way: “I suppose my jewelry designs are the antithesis of the expression displayed here at home.” Indeed. Back then, while her pieces were minimalist and understated, her home was expressive and vibrant with saturated colors. Today? “It’s flip-flopped. I started a sister collection that explores texture and color, and that...

Climate Change is Already Drastically Altering the World’s Climate Zones

In an article published by the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies, Nicola Jones details some of the ways that the Earth’s climate zones have shifted in response to our changing climate. Each effect is accompanied by a map, so you can actually see the magnitude. Her first example is that the tropics are getting bigger by 30 miles per decade. In a paper published in August, Lu and colleagues tracked how and why the Hadley cell is expanding. They found that since satellite records sta...

GOP sees Muratsuchi vs. Scotto Assembly race as rare L.A.-area shot for upset

MANHATTAN BEACH — Frank Scotto left his debate with Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi frustrated. It was hard for either man to dispute the other’s claims at the Oct. 9 forum put by the League of Women’s Voters and the Manhattan Beach Chamber of Commerce. The format called for one-minute answers with no follow-ups or direct replies, and the moderator ordered both sides to refrain from “speaking negatively about the other candidate.” “It’s not a ‘debate.’ That’s what the problem is,” Scotto, a Republican...

Eniac Ventures Seed to Scale Podcast

While we aren’t LPs in Eniac Ventures, we are big fans of the team. So, it was my pleasure to be interviewed by Hadley Harris as part of their Seed to Scale Podcast. The interview ended up being two episodes and, while listening to it in the car, I felt like it was one of the better recent interviews that I’ve done. Hadley and I talked for about an hour and then he edited the discussion down into two ten minute podcasts, so he pulled out the good stuff and left all the garbage on the cutting roo...
