"Beto O'Rourke was the one to come up with the name 'Cult of the Dead Cow' for the hacker group in April 1985."

I'm reading the Wikipedia article "Cult of the Dead Cow" because I was blogging about Beto O'Rourke this morning, and in the comments Ron Winkleheimer said, "i'm way more interested in the fact that he was in the Cult of The Dead Cow." I said out loud, "Why did they call it Cult of the Dead Cow? Was it because they were eating hamburgers?"So I looked it up, and I see: "Beto O'Rourke was the one to come up with the name 'Cult of the Dead Cow' for the hacker group in April 1985." The footnote sent...

#EATLIKEANDY.

Another Super Bowl ad. This is risky...Apparently, that really is Andy Warhol, not (as I originally thought) an actor trying to look and act like Andy Warhol. Not everyone recognizes Andy Warhol, and I suspect that a Venn diagram of people who recognize (and like) Andy Warhol and people who will eat a simple fast-food burger doesn't show a lot of overlap. But I appreciate the daring of this ad. It shows so much about the fast-food burger experience. It really is rather stark and lonely. Simple. ...

Wow! Burger King made fun of Trump. (Who does Burger King think eats at Burger King?)

Think of how much of a laughingstock a president has to become to have *Burger King* make fun of him. Sad. https://t.co/aUBiBxQACr— George Conway (@gtconway3d) January 16, 2019 In case you don't get the reference, Trump recently tweeted "Because of the Shutdown I served them massive amounts of Fast Food (I paid), over 1000 hamberders etc" (reported in "Trump’s ‘Hamberders’ Tweet Becomes Fodder for Late-Night Laughs" (NYT)). ADDED: Maybe Burger King's tweet is affectionate. I shouldn't accept t...

As LA Unified pushes new legal bid to postpone strike, parents and teachers make their picket signs in North Hollywood

On a street corner in North Hollywood, dozens of LAUSD elementary school students held handmade picket signs and chanted “Class size matters” or “We support teachers” to honking passersby on Sunday, as the teachers union said that its Jan. 10 strike date may be prolonged to Jan. 14 by a new legal offensive filed by the district. “UTLA goes to court proactively this week to scuttle his third attempt at an injunction, based on a disingenuous claim that UTLA did not give sufficient notice of our in...

"She was very well prepared. Since '... Baby One More Time' was the first song, we really didn’t know where to take it. We just kept on recording."

"We tried a couple of different styles. After a while, I could hear her stomach growl in the microphone. I asked if she was hungry. We’d been going for eight hours. She said, 'No, I’m fine.' I said, 'Let’s take a break,' and she had three burgers."From "'Britney Spears wanted to be a star': An oral history of '...Baby One More Time'" (Entertainment Weekly). Why ostracize Louis C.K.?

I'm reading "Now that Louis C.K. has admitted he’s a pig, can we keep him? The answer is still no," by Hank Stuever in the Washington Post. Why can't we hate the sin but love the sinner? To ostracize a person is to say: He's very different from us. His sins are of a different order. By cutting him off from us, we are restored. We're the good people, and we've demonstrated our goodness by ridding ourselves of that devil.Steuver explains why the remedy is exile:The end of Louis C.K. — who, at 50, i...

My 7 favorite phrases from the Politico article "Trump offers Xi steak, not a Big Mac, at Mar-a-Lago."

Here's the article, by Annie Karni, about Trump's encounter yesterday with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Here's my list.7. "... something in between an official East Room black tie gala and a stop for Big Macs on the side of the road."6. "Trump’s known favorites, dry-aged steak and whipped potatoes."5. "golf... (frowned on by the Chinese Communist Party as a rich man's sport)."4. "The first lady appeared to be enjoying a glass of red wine, while the Chinese first lady, Peng Liyuan, sipped tea."3...

NYT anti-Trump headlines are getting pretty funny.

This morning I'm seeing: "Trump Is Still Not Very Popular, and His Problem With Women Could Return." Sounds like a petulant teenager. And "Grandiose Ideas for Donald Trump Inaugural Give Way to Traditional." What were the grandiose ideas? All I'm seeing is that Trump's friend Mark Burnett (producer of "The Apprentice") thought of "a parade up Fifth Avenue" and "a helicopter ride to Washington from New York," but it sounds as though the idea has pretty much always been to do another traditional i...

"The Last Communist City/A visit to the dystopian Havana that tourists never see."

A Spring 2014 article by Michael J. Totten. Excerpt:Many tourists return home convinced that the Cuban model succeeds where the Soviet model failed. But that’s because they never left Cuba’s Elysium.... Outside its small tourist sector, the rest of the city looks as though it suffered a catastrophe on the scale of Hurricane Katrina or the Indonesian tsunami. Roofs have collapsed. Walls are splitting apart. Window glass is missing. Paint has long vanished. It’s eerily dark at night, almost entire...

Hillary Clinton danced with Paul McCartney while Jimmy Buffett played 'Cheeseburger in Paradise' during a fundraiser at his house, per pool — Bradd Jaffy (@BraddJaffy) August 31, 2016 So beautifully, tragically tone deaf. And the tweet is so perfect, right down to the potential for misreading "per pool," which got me picturing Paul and Hillary dancing by a swimming pool. Watch: Could tacos replace the hamburger as America’s most iconic food

Follow Matador on Vimeo Follow Matador on YouTube OUR MEAT MAN Nick Solares has a theory: Tacos will soon replace hamburgers as America’s most ubiquitous dish, thanks to the triple whammy of rising beef prices, shifting demographic and cultural patterns, and our nation’s current love affair with Mexican food. He discusses the matter with taco evangelist and New York City-based chef Alex Stupak, who’s inclined to agree.

This and That in Paris

This and That in Paris: Metro entrance at Palais Royal made of hand blown Murano glass for the millennium. Pyramid at the Louvre shining in the sun. The pyramid was and is controversial but I do like how you can see the Louvre through the glass. Most French eat their hamburgers with a knife and fork. The hamburgers cost about 20 Euros unless you go to Macdonalds. A nice place in Montmartre that I want to try sometime.
