Review: DC's 'Aquaman' is Utterly Preposterous But Insanely Watchable

Created by Paul Norris & Mort Weisinger, Aquaman debuted in 1941's More Fun Comics #73. In his Golden Age appearances, Aquaman is described as a human being who lives and thrives under the water and can speak with sea creatures "in their own language." During the late '50s and 60s, Aquaman was established as a founding member of the Justice League and was a mainstay on Hanna Barbera’s Super Friends, which ran from 1973 to 1986. In the '90s, the wholesome seahorse-riding superhero was re-imagin...

Scooby-Doo Team-Up #44 Preview: Dastardly and Muttley!

Out today is the latest installment of one of the comics I most enjoy reading these days: Scooby-Doo Team-Up. Issue #44 puts the characters in contact with a Hanna-Barbera favorite: fiendish Dick Dastardly and his oddly human-like snickering dog Muttley. They starred in a 1969 cartoon, Dastardly and Muttley in Their Flying Machines, which spun out of Wacky Races. You probably know it best from the theme song, “Stop the Pigeon“. DC has provided the following preview pages from the [...]

Cars are Now So Well Built, Manufacturers Pipe In Fake Engine Sounds (Listen Here)

With electric cars, the darn things are so quiet that artificial noises must be piped into the cabins; as we learned with the I-Pace, Jaguar's designers even took the extreme step of hiring a Hollywood sound engineer to tune the X-Wing-Fighter-like noise that car emits.Even internal combustion engine cars now have fake noise, as they're so well-built and quiet that drivers accustomed to engine sounds might be turned off. "Automakers say they resort to artifice," reports the Washington Post, "bec...

The Popdose Interview: Paul Melançon’s “Depression, Ayahuasca, Cartoons” and New Music

More than once, I’ve played Paul Melançon’s music for my friends, and I generally get the same reaction from them. They will appreciate it initially with the kind of comfort and ease one has while listening to old favorites. They quickly realize that this is not a familiar song, but by then, it’s too late. His songwriting is no nostalgia trip but, rather, the sound of a man who slipped out of a more creative, (some would say) better time. I came to his Camera Obscura album almost a decade after ...

The Jetsons

When I was a kid, two of my favorite cartoons were from Hanna-Barbera; The Flintsones and The Jetsons. I particularly loved The Jetsons. From Wikipedia: the Jetsons live in a comical version of the future, with elaborate robotic contraptions, aliens, holograms, and whimsical inventions.[3][4] The original series comprised 24 episodes and aired on Sunday nights on ABC beginning September 23, 1962, with primetime reruns continuing through September 22, 1963 In the last few weeks, I have been feeli...
