Top-10 Finns of the 1980s

When Matti Hagman debuted for the Boston Bruins on Oct. 7, 1976, he became the first Finnish-trained and Finnish-born player to play in the NHL. But the 1980s were when Finnish players truly took off. They demonstrated that not only could they play alongside the best of the best in the NHL, but in many instances the ...

St. Louis Blues’ 50-Goal Scorers

Ever since Maurice “The Rocket” Richard became the first to do so in 1944-45, scoring 50 goals in one season has been the pinnacle plateau for NHL goal scorers. The magic 50-number has distinguished the true “snipers” of the league. While Wayne Gretzky once scored 50 in only 39 games – an NHL record – many Hockey Hall of Famers never hit the mark even once. Since their inaugural NHL season in 1967-68, the St. Louis Blues have had only three players to reach 50 goals in a single season. To put th...

This Week in Photography Books: Lorena Turner

I used to know Keanu Reeves. It’s true. Back in the 90’s, I worked on a couple of movies in New York, just before moving back to New Mexico. One of them, a major Warner Brother production, was called “The Devil’s Advocate,” and starred Keanu, Charlize Theron and Al Pacino. I got hired as an office intern, was soon promoted to office PA, and then got a second promotion to location assistant. (Before I was fired in winter so they could hire a much more qualified person for the job.) Because I an...

3 Bold Rangers Predictions for the Rest of Season

The New York Rangers have had a tumultuous season. From an early win streak to a troubled winter, the team hasn’t been able to find much footing in this period of rebuilding. That being said, the effort is usually visible and they’ve been able to make most of their contests competitive. Indeed this has been a storied season full of rumors of trades and potential offseason acquisitions. But through all the rumblings and talk, there is still a lot of hockey to play. Here are my three bold Ra...

Rangers’ Roster Will See Lindgren Back

The second half of the New York Rangers’ 2018-19 season is about to get underway. With it comes several roster-related questions for the streaky, rebuilding team: When will general manager Jeff Gorton pull the trigger on the next anticipated trade? Which veteran will be sent away next? Will the Rangers do anything to clear up logjams? What about the prospects still fighting for a spot on the NHL roster? That brings us to defenseman Ryan Lindgren, who was recalled from the Hartford Wolf Pac...

Rangers Buying Out Their Defense Could Lead to Regret

So far, the New York Rangers have been passing the “patience test” during their rebuild. No impulsive big-name free-agent signings or quick-fix trades. No rushing youngsters in the minors who aren’t ready for the NHL level. Just a steady, gradual approach to the process of properly laying a foundation for the future – one they hope will yield consistent playoff appearances and eventually, Stanley Cup contention. The next hurdle on that path will come this offseason when the front office wi...
