How Successful Women Advocate For Themselves At Work — & How You Can, Too

Women rarely have just one job. In addition to our careers, there’s the nurturing we do at home, within ourselves, and in our relationships. And let’s face it, it doesn’t even end there. At work, we’re often tasked with the additional, invisible labor of fighting for respect, recognition, and fair compensation. That’s what makes self-advocacy such a critical skill for women. We’re not always lucky enough to have a benevolent boss or a workplace that inherently recognizes our worth and power. But...

Saraswati Devi: India’s Maiden Female Composer

Saraswati Devi was a Parsi, born as Khursheed Minocher Homji, in 1912. India’s first female composer, Saraswati Devi had a sonorous legacy which met an abrupt end as she was swiftly erased from memory and compelled to live a reclusive life, writes Sharad Dutt. Towards the end of 1933, a young couple arrived in Bombay carrying two highly acclaimed silent feature films, The Light of Asia and Shiraz, which had earlier been screened across several cities in Europe. This celebrity couple was Himan...

Browntourage: The Wokest Girl Gang Yet

Before meeting Hawa Arsala, I already felt well-acquainted with her and her curly, triangle-shaped 'do. Like any of her thousands of followers, I had fallen for Arsala through her perfectly curated Instagram, where she wore white tube top bodysuits tucked into pocketless mom jeans and shiny clogs. She was one of those girls that married white borders on her photos (something I could never quite master) with photo shoots she art directed for Nylon Germany — and none of it felt like she was tryin...

The Bottom Line: 'Swing Time' By Zadie Smith

Zadie Smith writes novels about the people and themes that seem particularly freighted with political baggage these days: immigrants, multiracial families and social groups, the white and non-white working class. Though she’s writing about her own home turf ― England, typically north-west London ― those realities are no less incendiary there, in the Brexit era, than they are here, in the Trump one. But Smith has also declined, most recently in an interview with Slate, to get too political a...

Wilaya: The Goal of Believers | Dr. Shadee Elmasry

Written by Dr. Shadee Elmasry To believe in the tenets of faith makes one a believer. But the believers have another goal too: wilaya. Wilaya is a personal relationship with Allah that develops throughout one's struggles against the four enemies: ego, whimsical impulses, shaytan, and dunya. It is said that the wali is the one given tawfeeq (Divinely aided success) in conquering these four enemies. What are the signs of these four enemies? The sign of the ego is that it is one's constant bad habi...

The DWP – a bureaucracy of outstanding brutality | Diane Taylor

How can the DWP axe benefits in an instant but be unable to reinstate them for weeks, leaving recipients such as Hawa, a former asylum seeker who has already endured so much, penniless? The Department for Work and Pensions prides itself on embracing diversity and promoting equality of opportunity. And indeed, when it comes to pulling the plug on benefits there is no sign of discrimination – everybody is treated equally harshly. It is not only those who are too sick to work but are informed they ar...
