HECM Originators Get Creative to Solve Short-to-Close Issues

As more Home Equity Conversion Mortgage borrowers are short to close since last year’s principal limit factor reductions, originators are getting creative with ways to help their clients who need to bring funds to closing. Most commonly, borrowers find out they are short to close when their mortgage balance is still too high, they must make repairs on their home, or they must provide a life expectancy set aside to cover costs like property taxes or homeowners insurance. In the greater Washington...

Hawaii is trying to solve the 'problem' of too much success

Vacations aren't supposed to be stressful. But a trip to Hawaii can be just that, if you are in a traffic jam on Maui's Hana Highway, lost in space trying to find parking at Kauai's Kalalau Trail, or struggling to find access to a South Kohala beach on the Big Island (pictured above).  Seeking to relieve these stress points—and many others throughout the Islands—the Hawaii Visitors Bureau is developing a DirectAloha app, which will give visitors live updates on locales clogged by "ove...

Weekend Cooking: Korean Home Cooking by Sohui Kim

I've been pretty busy this month with work, which always cuts into my kitchen time. Regardless, I couldn't wait to start exploring Sohui Kim's Korean Home Cooking (Abrams, Oct. 16) cookbook. I discovered Korean food when I worked in Hawaii, and I've missed it ever since I moved east. It's a sad thing, but I don't live near a good Korean restaurant What's more, I developed a late-in-life peanut allergy, so I'm now a little nervous to order Asian food out. The idea that I could learn to make my o...

Japan is steaming bowls of ramen on a cold night. Japan is shy geishas rushing to their appointments in platform sandals, bullet trains carving through the countryside, bubbling hot springs set in the mountains. And so much more. At the ti...

Two sunscreen chemicals to avoid – Oxybenzone and Octinoxate

Why is it so easy to get a sunburn in the Hawaiian Islands? Hawaii is the state located closest to the equator where UV rays are most intense. That makes a good sunscreen one of the essential items you need on a Hawaii vacation. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, you should use a broad-spectrum, SPF 30 or higher sunscreen. Though there are plenty of sunscreens with SPF 30 and higher, there are two commonly used chemicals that will be banned from sale in Hawaii. Those two chemicals are oxyb...

Mysterious U.S. whale die-off is now deep in its 2nd year. We still don't know the cause.

Using a tractor, state and town officials in coastal New Hampshire attempted to drop the carcass of a minke whale into a dumpster in mid-September. But the dead cetacean proved too big, bouncing off the red bin and flopping onto the pavement of a beachside parking lot. The minke whale — which can weigh up to 20,000 pounds — is one of 55 that have turned up dead on East Coast shores of the United States since January 2017.  The strange die-offs have officially been labeled as an "Unusual Mortalit...

Best places for cold-water surfing

There’s nothing like surfing in cold water. Those surfers with the inclination to seek it out are often rewarded with empty lineups and a feeling that you can’t quite replicate in the comfort of warm, tropical waters. Imagine being in the sea with only one other surfer on a winter’s day, encased head to toe in thick neoprene. Now you’re sliding down the frigid face of a wave, the sound of it breaking muffled by your wetsuit hood, a sharp wind in your face as you trim across a chilly wall. The...

US states Instagram statistics

You might think of yourself as an Instagram superstar because you have over 10,000 followers, but that’s peanuts compared to the number of people who follow your state’s official Instagram. This interactive map, created by WeSwap with data from Instagram, Census.gov, and worldatlas.com, shows how many people follow the official tourism account of each US state. While you might assume a warm-weather state, or a densely-populated state, might top the list, it’s actually Michigan that le...
