October 21, 2020 at 12:48 PM It’s been almost a week since the October 15th start of the new pre-travel testing program. The system is working, but not without some issues. Per an estimate provided to Hawaii News Now, the Safe Travels application has gone smoothly for about 80% of travelers.

Now, assuming all the precautions are safe, opening restaurants, hotels, tours and attractions are going to be the next hurdle. October 10, 2020 at 11:52 AM Hawaii (Big) Island Travel Update
Per the Star Advertiser, Hawaii Island Mayor Kim has received tentative approval to require out-of-state passengers who have taken a pre-travel test to take a second test upon arrival. The plan for a second test is pending approval by the state attorney general.
Mayor Kim says the earlier reports of the Big Island opting out was a misunderstanding. Here’s an excerpt from the Star Advertiser:

August 17, 2020 at 1:59 PM There’s no doubt that the tourism shutdown in Hawaii has created economic hardships. Unemployment is high. Tax revenue is down. It’s affected both big and small businesses.
One solution to restart tourism that’s being pursued is called “resort bubbles” and “geo-fencing.” It basically allows a visitors to come to Hawaii and spend their entire vacation exclusively at a resort hotel. This concept could be used if/until the pre-travel testing program can be implemented.

Hawaii is experiencing record high COVID-19 cases
For three days in a row last week, Hawaii recorded new record high numbers of COVID-19 cases. The highest daily number so far is 73 cases recorded on July 25th. Through July 28th, Hawaii has recorded 1,757 cases with most of those (1,429 cases) being on Oahu.

Through 1:30pm EDT, May 14, 2020, Oahu, Maui and Hawaii (Big) Island have not extended their mandatory quarantine past May 31, 2020, however, we would not be surprised to see more extensions. UPDATE: Governor Ige of Hawaii is extending the mandatory 14-day quarantine for all incoming travelers through June 30, 2020 for the entire state.

Yuliya’s shot was taken in Waikoloa on Hawaii (Big) Island. We have seen many honu (turtles) relaxing along the shoreline in Waikoloa. In fact, the entire Kohala Coast is an excellent place to see Hawaiian sea turtles.
Honu come onto the beaches to rest. So, if you see one, please give them their space so they can relax and rejuvenate. A distance of at least 10 feet or 3 meters is recommended.
