Aloha Friday Photo: Wonderful Waimea Christmas Tree + Hawaii traveler quarantine reduced to 10 days

Mahalo to the very talented Hawaii (Big) Island photographer Ethan Tweedie for allowing us to share this shot for Aloha Friday Photos. Ethan took this photo at Parker School in “downtown” Waimea. It’s such a cheerful shot. We love the colorful lights arranged to make a rainbow effect. It’s a perfect Christmas tree for the state that’s nicknamed the “rainbow state.” — On different note, we wanted to let you know that effective December 17, 2020, the quarantine period for travelers to Hawaii was ...

Though Hawaii tourism opens 0ct. 15 with pre-travel testing, tours, attractions, hotels may be slower to reopen

The long-awaited reopening of Hawaii tourism come October 15th with pre-travel testing has been a huge hurdle to this point. Now, assuming all the precautions are safe, opening restaurants, hotels, tours and attractions are going to be the next hurdle. Some are already open with restrictions while others will be opening in the weeks to come. The reasons for a delayed opening are many, such as: local rules prohibiting or restricting reopening the time it takes to rehire and retrain employees wi...

Hawaii in disarray over planned October 15th start of pre-travel testing program

It’s astounding that this late in the process, Hawaii leaders can’t agree on the way forward to test and allow visitors into the state. As we shared yesterday, Hawaii (Big) Island Mayor Kim has opted out of the pre-travel testing program. Could other islands follow? In a statement on Facebook, Kauai Mayor Kawakami says, “We have not yet made a determination. Decisions must be deliberate and we can’t commit to plans we don’t fully understand. Would you take a “geo-fence” vacation to Hawaii?

There’s no doubt that the tourism shutdown in Hawaii has created economic hardships. Unemployment is high. Tax revenue is down. It’s affected both big and small businesses. One solution to restart tourism that’s being pursued is called “resort bubbles” and “geo-fencing.” It basically allows a visitors to come to Hawaii and spend their entire vacation exclusively at a resort hotel. This concept could be used if/until the pre-travel testing program can be implemented. In a press conference on Fri...

Pololu Valley on the Big Island is like Kauai's Napali Coast—minus the crowds

The view from the end of the road in North Kohala is an eye-magnet, encouraging your feet to start walking. In 20 minutes, you can be down there. The green nub on the north end of the Big Island—Kohala— that points toward Maui is a million years older than the island's southern volcanic slopes, whose shores have been widened by fresh lava just htis year. That means Kohala has deep tropical valleys and ridges with waterfalls and no roads—like Kauai's Napali Coast. Most people hang aro...
