The Alfred Hitchcock Cameo You May Have Missed In Psycho

Tarantino does it. Shyamalan does it. Wes Craven, John Carpenter, and Eli Roth have done it. The director cameo is a time-honored tradition in cinema, and it's a fun one. Catching a glimpse of the person behind the curtain rarely breaks engagement with a movie -- in fact, it can enrich the experience. He wasn't a director, but for Marvel fans, a Stan Lee sighting is not only a treat, but while he was alive, a brief appearance was expected in any comic book movie based on his co-creations. One of...

Ohio considers letting teenagers work later on school nights, following Wisconsin in easing child labor laws to deal with worker shortages

A line of customers outside a popular Ohio restaurant in June, when the state's coronavirus measures were lifted. Gaelen Morse/Reuters Ohio may allow some teenagers to work later on school nights. About "90% of restaurants in Ohio are operating with a severe employee shortage," one local said. Wisconsin last month passed a similar bill, allowing students to work as late as 11pm. Fires burn as triple-digit temperatures heat up Southern California

The dry heat on Wednesday — the first day of fall — prompted heat advisories and set the stage for a host of fires that sprouted across Southern California. And as temperatures climbed, so did the number of fire emergencies. First came a small brush fire around 11 a.m., burning near baseball fields and several schools at Perris Hill Park in San Bernardino, said the San Bernardino County Fire Department. Fire crews were able to hold the blaze to five acres. Temperature: 93 degrees. Around 11:30 p...

Tony Hawk Breaks Down Skateboarding Into 21 Levels of Difficulty: From Easy to Complex

Thirty or so Christmases ago, I received my first skateboard. Alas, it was also my last skateboard: not long after I got the hang of balancing on the thing, it was run over and snapped in half by a mail truck. There went my last chance at Olympic athleticism, though I couldn’t have known it at the time: it debuted as an event at the Summer Olympics just this year, and its competitions are underway even now in Tokyo. This is, in any case, a bit late for me, given the relative… maturity of...

Weekend reading: A post-Covid return to normality or time to rethink it?

W hisper it, but it does seem like the long shadow of Covid may at last be retreating in the UK. That’s not the case for the whole world. Countries like India are feeling the full force of what some in Britain still march and vote to deny. Average global cases recently sustained a new peak of 800,000 a day. But thanks to our long (and, yes, damaging) lockdown, high vaccination rates, and the immunological protection granted by previous infection, the UK appears to be leaving the tunnel we ente...

Hawk and Rev: Vampire Slayers – review

Director: Ryan Barton-Grimley Release date: 2020 Contains spoilers Let’s head back to the 80s… the entire aesthetic of this film seems born of a love of the 80s, with a theme song and credits that sounded and looked “right there”, and a particular love of the Lost Boys - the film is mentioned (as are the sequels), the film is set in Santa Muerte (which summons thoughts of Santa Carla) and we get a sign for the “Sam Emerson Water Filtration Plant”. It is also very much a comedy, determined to...

Tony Hawk’s Last 720

Last night, Tony Hawk posted a video of himself doing a 720 at the age of 52 (a full 2 years beyond the Brimley/Cocoon Line). I recently made a 720 and it was a battle. The last one I made before this was over three years ago, and it’s much harder now all things considered: recently dislocated fingers hinder my grab, my spin is slower so I need to go higher for full rotation and… I’m really old. pic.twitter.com/u8pbwRhS9j— Tony Hawk (@tonyhawk) January 27, 2021 Hawk says it’ll probably be...

Tony Hawk, 52, landed his first 720 in years. And he is rightly STOKED. And he is turning that stoke into an opportunity to raise money for charity. Hawk writes: The last one I made was over three years ago, which sent me flying through the center of my ramp and into a pole midair; it didn't instill confidence for further attempts. — Read the rest

Small numbers of protesters gather at fortified U.S. capitols

Small groups of right-wing protesters — some of them carrying rifles — gathered outside heavily fortified statehouses around the country Sunday as National Guard troops and police kept watch to prevent a repeat of the violence that erupted at the U.S. Capitol. There were no immediate reports of any clashes. Security was stepped up in recent days after the FBI warned of the potential for armed protests in Washington and at all 50 state capitol buildings ahead of President-elect Joe Biden’s inaugu...

‘Cobra Kai’ Creators Reveal Which Characters Can Return to the Show and What to Expect from Season 4 [Interview]

The good news was that  Cobra Kai season 3 premiered on Netflix earlier than previously annoyed. The bad news was that meant we couldn’t schedule an interview with creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald until the new year. It was a small price to pay for getting Cobra Kai early, especially for the fans who’ve been waiting almost two years since season 2 on YouTube. Season 3 dealt with the aftermath of the high school battle royale that ended the previous season and left...
