A mammogram technician and mother of a young child was found dead from coronavirus in her Georgia home, state officials said. Coweta County Coroner Richard Hawk says police discovered the 42-year-old woman’s body Thursday (Mar. 19) in the living room of her home in Newnan, about 40 miles southwest of Atlanta, after a family member called the Sheriff’s Office requesting a welfare check. Hawk said Diedre Wilkes had been dead for at least 12-16 hours before police found her body. Wilkes’ young chil...

4 Books for Middle Grade (and Older) Readers

Wait! Stop! Don't click away. I know what you're thinking: you don't have kids and you don't read kids' books. What you might not know is that today's juvenile fiction often addresses real-life tough issues, like homelessness, disabilities, gender identity, loneliness, and family problems. Of course, you'll also find plenty of fantasy, historical fiction, and action-adventure too. I like middle grade fiction because it's devoid of the angst and love triangles that are so common in young ...

Robin Lehner posts photo of chest imprint from slap shot

Wednesday afternoon former Blackhawks goalie Robin Lehner posted a photo on Twitter with a cross imprint on his chest from his gold chain. Lehner was traded to the Vegas Golden Knights ahead of the Feb. 24 trade deadline. Vegas had the day off on Wednesday, so it's most likely the former Hawk took the slap shot he's referring to in Tuesday's 3-0 shutout victory against the New Jersey Devils.

Lockjaw Meets the Hawk

To the best of my knowledge, tenor saxophonists Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis and Coleman Hawkins recorded together as a duo only once (Very Saxy is a group session). Davis—like Sonny Rollins, Don Byas, Lucky Thompson and others— was deeply influenced by Hawkins's gruff, boastful attack. So teaming up with his mentor put him on the spot, and Davis opened all the valves for the session. The album was Night Hawk, recorded in December 1960 for Prestige's Swingville subsidiary. Like Moodsville, Swingville...

Survivor‘s New Season Brings Back Many of the Show’s Most Influential Winners. Where Is Original Champion Richard Hatch?

On Wednesday night, CBS will air the premiere of the 40th season of Survivor — yes, Survivor is still on the air. To mark the round number, the reality show is doing something special: the 20 players competing this time around are all former winners of the show. It’s Survivor: Winners at War. Across its 39 prior seasons, Survivor had a roster of 38 past winners to choose from. (One contestant, Sandra Diaz-Twine, has two wins under her belt.) Twenty of these “Sole Survivors” were ch...

Mark Wahlberg & Alan Arkin in First Trailer for 'Spenser Confidential'

"It's time you tell me what's really going on here." Netflix has debuted the first official trailer for Spenser Confidential, the latest film from the actor-director team-up Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg (of Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon, Patriots Day, Mile 22). Based on the "Wonderland" book series, Wahlberg plays an ex-cop named Spenser, of course. Just out of prison and trying to escape Boston, he is sucked back into Boston's criminal underbelly when two Boston Police officers are murde...

‘Spenser Confidential’ Trailer: Mark Wahlberg and Peter Berg Head to Netflix

With the world of theatrical films becoming less and less stable, more and more filmmakers are making the leap to Netflix. In 2018, director-actor team Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg had themselves a bit of a misfire with the odious action film Mile 22 – a movie that didn’t flop, but didn’t set the box office on fire, either. Rather than risk that again, Berg and Wahlberg are now at Netflix with Spenser Confidential, an action-comedy based on the book series from Robert B. Parker. Watch the Spens...

7 recommended books about nature, the environment and unexpected encounters with nudists

Wildfires. Rising sea levels. Melting permafrost. Maybe it’s the serious challenges we face that are fueling the recent surge of compelling nonfiction about nature, animals and the environment. Some of the best books published this year were on environmental topics, such as Robert MacFarlane’s brilliant “Underland,” and they offered reminders that — despite our mental relocation into cyberspace and social media — there is still a real world, and we still live in it. Cheryl Strayed’s “Wild” and H...

Miranda, Ellen and Michael

In The Wall Street Journal this week , I interviewed country singer-songwriter Miranda Lambert for my "House Call" column in the Mansion section (go here). Miranda talked about growing up in Texas, learning about music from her singer, guitarist and songwriting father and the valuable lessons she learned when her parents lost everything in the oil bust of the 1980s. The trick for me writing this column on Miranda was to structure the narrative velocity while retaining the lovely twang and exp...

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Wildlife Rescue Crews are celebrating after winning a legal battle in the case of a red-shouldered hawk that was shot in Sacramento back in April. The Gold Country Wildlife Rescue said the shooter enjoyed sitting by his chicken coop and shooting at hawks as they flew by. He now has to pay for the surgery that removed the bullet and owes the wildlife rescue $2,940 for the care of the hawk, which is still under their care. California Department of Fish and Wildlife asks that a...

William Zabka on Giving John Kreese a Second Chance in ‘Cobra Kai’ Season 2 [Interview]

Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) was the villain of The Karate Kid . Sure, he had a bad influence in John Kreese (Martin Kove), but Johnny was the one Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) had to defeat at the All Valley Karate Tournament. Cobra Kai reinvented the movie series with Johnny as the hero, or at least a co-protagonist with a middle-aged Daniel. The final scene of season one showed the return of John Kreese, so fans have spent all year wondering how Johnny is going to deal with hi...
