Hedges are done

The guys arrived on Tuesday morning and finished trimming the hedges pretty quickly. Then they took down two of the dead birches (two more to go!) and sawed them into lengths I can burn in the wood stove. Then the heavy equipment was delivered. The hedges are done for another year. The heavy equipment being unloaded out back. Heavy might not be the right word. The front loader/backhoe, steam roller, and mobile bucket all look like they're the size of Tonka trucks. They fit right in with the sm...

Every Christmas, Peruvians Living in the Andes Settle Their Scores at Fist-Fighting Festivals

As Chris Hedges discovered as a battle-hardened reporter, war is a force that gives us meaning. Whether we sublimate violence in entertainment, have paid professionals and state agents do it for us, or carry it out ourselves, human beings cannot seem to give up their most ancient vice; “we demonize the enemy,” Hedges wrote, “so that our opponent is no longer human,” and “we view ourselves, our people, as the embodiment of absolute goodness…. Each side reduces the other to objects — event...

Kalisz, Litherland complete UGA, uh, USA Olympic swimming sweep

Tokyo—As a kid Chase Kalisz followed his older sister Courtney to the famed North Baltimore Aquatic Club but would dive into the pool that produced Michael Phelps only when enticed by people throwing coins to the water. If he was lucky, the former Georgia NCAA champion, later recalled, he might come back up with more than a dollar. Uberall raises $115M, acquires MomentFeed to scale up its location marketing services

Location-based services may have had their day as a salient category for hot apps or innovative tech leveraging the arrival of smartphones, but that’s largely because they are now part of the unspoken fabric of how we interact with digital services every day: we rely on location specific information when we are on search engines, when we are using maps, or weather apps, or taking and posting photos and more. Still, there remain a lot of gaps in how location information links up with accurate inf...

This Week In Running: May 3, 2021

The post This Week In Running: May 3, 2021 appeared first on iRunFar. Thanks to BOA for sponsoring This Week in Running! Deja vu, we’ve got another 100-mile world record, this time on a treadmill by Taggart VanEtten in Illinois. A lot of times races in the American West dominate the landscape, but we really just take it as it comes, and that means all of Tennessee’s Strolling Jim 40 Mile, Virginia’s UROC 100k, and North Carolina’s Alexander County 24 Hour race, among others, this weekend. ‘French Exit’ star Lucas Hedges talks working with Michelle Pfeiffer in surreal comedy

Lucas Hedges might just be 24 but with an Oscar nomination and nearly 20 films to his credit, he knows a good screenplay when he reads one. “The appeal was in the effortlessness of the language,” Hedges says via Zoom about “French Exit,” his new film with Michelle Pfeiffer. “There were no clichés in the writing. Nothing cliché about it. “Even when I didn’t understand what he was saying, I thought it was interesting,” he says. “And so I wasn’t even drawn to the character as much as I was to how m...

‘French Exit’ Trailer: Michelle Pfeiffer Goes Broke and Heads to Paris

The French Exit trailer is here, and it wants you to know one thing: Michelle Pfeiffer is great. Perhaps you didn’t need to be reminded of that (I sure didn’t), but that seems to be the film’s biggest selling point. “Hey, Michelle Pfeiffer is in our damn movie!” this trailer screams. “Isn’t that cool?” Yes, it is. In French Exit, Pfieffer plays a once-wealthy Manhattan socialite who loses her money and flees to Paris with her son, played by Lucas Hedges. Watch the French Exit trailer below. ...

‘Let Them All Talk’ Review: Steven Soderbergh Takes You on a Leisurely Cruise in This Curious Dramedy

Can you even imagine going on a cruise again? I’m sure some people are perfectly fine with the idea – heck, some people would be willing to go right now, this very second, if they could. But here in the age of the coronavirus, cruises seem like floating Petri dishes; isolated barges with no escape. Which makes Steven Soderbergh‘s curious Let Them All Talk already feel weirdly dated. It’s set in a world where people gather freely, maskless, throwing their cares to the wind. They board a huge shi...

HBO Max Spot Showcases New Footage From Steven Soderberg’s ‘Let Them All Talk’, Ridley Scott’s ‘Raised By Wolves’, and More

HBO Max had a somewhat botched debut thanks to confusion about WarnerMedia’s brands and which customers got the new streaming service for free and which ones needed to pay to subscribe. But the good news with setting the bar low at the start is that it should be easy for things to improve from here. Today, WarnerMedia released a new commercial promoting several big upcoming releases from HBO and HBO Max, and the spot features footage from Steven Soderbergh‘s new movie Let Them All Talk, the Rid...

Disneyland Rose adds color to the theme park and home gardens, too

It’s no secret that Disneyland has some of the most beautiful landscaping around, but did you know it has its own rose? When the park opens up again, you can head to the Town Square in the New Orleans Square area, near the edge of Rivers of America, to see them. Those big copper-to-pink blooms on the rose bushes are actually a special type, specially chosen back in 2002 to become their own specimen creation. Since then, they’ve also been available to the public and adorn the gardens of rose love...

We Hired an Expert to Teach Coop Members to Prune their (damn) Hedges

Marianne made the case against HOA gardening rules, but my community has a different problem, dare I say a much bigger one? A New Deal project, my planned community included an unfortunate garden feature – 18″ privet hedges, which are inherently high-maintenance and, we know now, invasive. And ours were planted very close to our sidewalks. Over the years, with height limitations having been eliminated by the ruling body (our 1,600-unit coop), look what’s become of those cute little hedges? It’...

We’re just a few days away from the launches of both AppleTV+ and Disney+, but there is still at least one more major player waiting to enter the streaming wars after those two: HBO Max. Golden Knights: Unpacking the Zykov Suspension

The NHL dropped the hammer on the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday, suspending forward Valentin Zykov for 20 games for violating the NHL/NHLPA Performance Enhancing Substance Program.  For the Golden Knights, the news was incredibly disheartening, as this marks the second time in two seasons that a member of their squad has been handed a suspension for this very infraction. Last season, Nate Schmidt was slapped with a 20-game ban after he tested positive for a banned substance believed to be ...

As we round the corner into the month of the RIJF there is ... Live jazz in and around Rochester, NY, May 30th to June 5th

As we head into June on the other end where we'll find the CGI Rochester International Jazz Festival, a familiar decline in the amount of jazz out there is showing up, but there is jazz out there.  Just have to look harder.  However, if you count the jazz at Fairport Canal Days, perhaps there is more? I will start my coverage of the RIJF soon (I hope... I always say that but life often intervenes).   Every Wednesday, every week, you'll find the next seven days of jazz in and around Rochester ri...
