Scientists discover why supermarket tomatoes taste so bland

Scientists compared the genomes of 725 wild and cultivated tomatoes (a pan-genome) to the tomato genome that's used to represent all varieties. The representative genome was missing thousands of genes present in the pan-genome, including one that's responsible for imparting flavor to the vegetable. The good news is that breeders seem to have recently began selecting for flavor, so it's possible that store-bought tomatoes could soon start tasting better. None Ever wonder why those pale-orange toma...

Kraft Heinz says employee misconduct prompts the company to restate earnings

Kraft Heinz Co., which has now received two subpoenas related to its procurement practices, plans to restate earnings and says it found evidence of employee misconduct that increased the cost of products sold. The effects of the restatements for 2016, 2017 and part of 2018 for supplier rebates and other misstatements are expected to be less than 2 percent in each year on adjusted earnings per share, the packaged-food giant said in a regulatory filing Monday. The company said it didn’t f...

REVIEW: Heinz Kranch Saucy Sauce

What is Heinz Kranch Saucy Sauce? Standing proudly as Heinz’s latest crazy condiment mashup, this special saucy sauce combines two of America’s favorite condiments – ketchup and ranch dressing – and puts them into a single, convenient squeeze bottle. How is it? As much as I loved the taste and novelty of Mayochup, I can’t seem to get behind Kranch in the same way. On the surface, both agglomerations sound like solid, if not slightly-too-similar ideas. Mayonnaise is an integral ingredient i...

History of popular condiments

Condiments can make or break a meal. They’re the addition that saves a dry sandwich and the extra touch that spices up a bit of sushi. No matter what you’re eating, there always seems to be a condiment on the side that is there to at least improve a dish, if not save it entirely. It’s something that has been done throughout history — something that’s immediately clear as soon as you take a deeper look at where your favorite condiments come from. This is how your favorite condiments came to do...

REVIEW: Heinz Mayomust and Mayocue Saucy Sauces

What are Heinz Mayomust and Mayocue Saucy Sauces? After the brilliant or infuriating (depending on who you ask) debut of Heinz’s Mayochup, the company has branched out to other mayonnaise condiment mashups with the launch of Mayomust and Mayocue. Following Mayochup’s lead, and as the back of the bottles tell me, these combine the delicious taste of yellow mustard (or classic BBQ) with mayonnaise and a special blend of spices. Full disclosure: I loved Mayochup. Everything about it tickled me ...

Buffett admits overpaying for Kraft: Financial Times

Warren Buffett said Berkshire Hathaway overpaid for Kraft’s merger with Heinz, the Financial Times reported. “We overpaid for Kraft,” the story quoted Buffett saying on CNBC. The so-called Oracle of Omaha added that he was “wrong in a couple of ways on Kraft Heinz.”  Buffett and 3G Capital acquired Kraft in 2015 to merge with Heinz. Kraft Heinz facing the painful downside of austerity approach

Kraft Heinz, born of the $49 billion merger of Kraft Foods and Heinz in 2015, had a disastrous fourth quarter, posting a net loss of $12.6 billion on Thursday, leading to a plunge of 27 percent in the share price on Friday. Controlled by the Swiss-Brazilian billionaire Jorge Paulo Lemann, via the investment firm 3G Capital, and American billionaire Warren Buffett, who holds 25 percent of the company's capital, Kraft Heinz has relied on its famed zero-based budgeting approach to cost-cutting. There's a chemical in coffee that may cause cancer, but researchers have found a way to reduce your risk

Last year, a California judge ruled that coffee companies must post warnings about  a potential cancer-causing chemical in their brews. That chemical is acrylamide, and it's found in fried, baked, or roasted foods. S ome research has suggested that it could pose a health concern for humans.   But the US Food and Drug Administration has found that the low dose of acrylamide in coffee is safe to consume. The biotechnology company Novozymes has developed a way to reduce acrylamide concentr...

Adding new chickens

So I've agreed to take in 7 hens from a neighbor who's too old/sick to care for hers anymore, and add them to my flock of 28. She called them Heinz 57s (which I believe just means they're crossed breeds). I've never added to my flock this way before. I've always allowed a hen or two to hatch out chicks when I wanted more girls. After looking around on backyard chickens, it looks like all I need to do is fence off a separate area for the new girls for a week so they can all get used to each o...
