Organic Overflow at Milan Design Week 2019

Floral use in furniture, installations and more To offset the precision frequently associated with furniture design, many participants in Milan Design Week 2019 used elements from nature to add soft, organic overflow to their presentations. In many instances, we’re simply referring to the calculated use of trees and plants near or atop artificial elements of design. With two specific exhibitions, however, floral components composed the …

Top 10 Best Office Chairs for Maximum Comfort

In 2012, a study found that we spend an average of 64 hours every week sitting on our gluteus maximus, the back to our fronts, more commonly known as our butt. That works out to about nine hours a day. That’s for an average person. If you work from home, it is likely going to be a much higher average number per day, depending on the day. While too much sitting every day can lead to health problems such as weight gain, poor blood circulation, and even diabetes having an occupation where sitting i...

The SSD Chair proves that more designers should take to crowdfunding

If IKEA pioneered the flat-pack furniture industry, the SSD Chair brought it to crowdfunding. You see, a lot of designs get abandoned as concepts because there’s no easy way to manufacture and sell them without having distribution channels, marketing teams, and retail partners. IKEA is what it is today only because it’s a phenomenal force of retail and has warehouses and brick-and-mortar stores in a number of countries… most independent designers do not. Creating a chair is easy. Selling it is...

Tools & Craft #124: The Future of Furniture, Part 6 - Solid

After detailing the final steps of the project of making a dresser, the anonymous author of Joiner and Cabinetmaker describes how cabinetmakers would use veneering and other techniques to set off the dresser to a different level of work. Such was the distinction between joiners work and cabinetmaking in the eighteenth and nineteenth century. Cabinet work was veneered and decorated, whereas joiner's work was not. In professional work this is no different today. The low-end carcass will be melamin...

Tools & Craft #120: The Future of Furniture, Part 2 - Goals

What kind of furniture will furniture makers make in the future? Before we can reasonably predict the future of furniture, we need to understand the goals and values of the furniture's makers. Is it to build something practical? Engage in creative expression? Work practically within time and money constraints? Are we just trying to see if we can credibly perform one technique or another -- or make sure the piece is within our skill set or the range of our equipment capability? Are we striving...

What Are Your Home Studio Must-Haves?

YD Talks: The Making of SPUN, the most exhilarating chair in the world

I remember the very first time I walked into a Herman Miller outlet. I walked right past the Aeron chair, Yves Behar’s SAYL chair, and even probably the most iconic thing in the room… the Eames Lounge Chair. I walked past all these hallmarks of great industrial design, because I had my eyes affixed on the most interesting object in the room. I say object because you couldn’t really call it a chair. It was an experience. It was the Spun.“There was no intention to design a chair”, says Thomas He...

The progression of office culture from the 50s to today

Office life has undergone a number of major changes since the 1950s. Of course, workplaces have always varied in terms of look and culture, oftentimes based on regional, industry-wide, or organizational norms. But there have also been a number of widespread changes over time. These shifts include increased workforce diversity, widespread bans on smoking, and changing trends regarding popular workplace layouts. Office culture has changed quite a bit over the years. Some of those shifts were a...

Studio 7.5 on the Design of Herman Miller's New Cosm Chair

Herman Miller looks like they may have knocked it out of the seating park again, this time with their new Cosm chair: The Cosm was designed by the Berlin-based design firm Studio 7.5, the same firm behind previous Herman Miller hits the Setu, the Mirra and the Mirra 2. Studio 7.5 is a relatively small firm--just ten people--and the firm uses that small size to keep their designs grounded. "Even if you produce at an industrial scale, there is some craftsmanship involved," explains 7....

Ross Lovegrove

Auteur and icon, Ross Lovegrove is among the most visionary designers of the past half century—for that matter, of the whole history of design. Admiringly dubbed “Captain Organic,” Lovegrove’s aesthetic might be characterized as equal parts Dalí and van der Rohe; his designs possess an unmatched fluidity and an inexorable form—a kind of “organic essentialism” that recognizes the inherent curvatures of both flora and fauna while demonstrating how these asynchronous shapes jibe with the sometimes ...

At NeoCon 2018: Herman Miller’s Cosm Task Chair

It’s no surprise that industry heavy Herman Miller had a successful NeoCon, taking home Silver in the category of Healthcare Guest and Lounge Seating for the Palisade Collection, and Gold for Ergonomic Desk/Task Chairs with the cosmically inclined Cosm. I say cosmic because Cosm is the very definition of space age, offering several innovations that will likely define the direction of task chair technology. Innovation #1 is Auto-Harmonic Tilt, the hidden mechanism beneath the seat that automati...
