Ten players the Angels could use, besides Trevor Bauer

The offseason is rolling on while the Angels are still searching for a general manager. Because of the pandemic, the GM meetings aren’t happening this week. Also, the uncertain financial state of the game is likely to create a slow free agent market. All of that gives the Angels a little extra time to hire someone without missing too much. They are expecting to hire someone before Thanksgiving. When they do pick a GM, the first item on the list is likely to be starting pitching. Trevor Bauer is ...

After disappointing season, Galaxy facing another important off-season to turn franchise around

The Galaxy’s 2020 season might as well have ended as soon as Julian Araujo picked up a red card in the 41st minute against the Vancouver Whitecaps, Sunday. The Galaxy already trailed a goal, and in two minutes allowed a second goal on the way to a 3-0 defeat, closing the chapter on another disappointing season for the proud franchise. This is the third season in the last four that the Galaxy has missed the MLS Cup Playoffs. The Galaxy finished the regular season 6-11-5 with 22 points. The Galaxy...

‘Chicharito’ didn’t deliver for Galaxy in 2020, ready to focus on next season

Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez’s first season with the Galaxy was hailed as a must-see event. Mexico’s all-time leading goal scorer finally landed in the U.S. to join the Galaxy, a team looking to quickly replace the goal-scoring prowess and star power of Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who returned to Europe after two seasons in L.A. “Scoring over 50 goals in 100-plus games for the Mexican national team, with him being on (Real) Madrid, Manchester United, he’s achieved a lot,” Galaxy general...

It’s time for Dodgers to start planning for 2021 defense

The offseason has already begun with 147 players declared free agents the morning after the Dodgers’ first World Series celebration in 32 years. The market figures to be flooded with more free agents than ever as teams address the financial losses caused by the pandemic this year and try to plan for an uncertain revenue situation in 2021. MLB hasn’t had back-to-back champions since the New York Yankees won three consecutive titles from 1998-2000. In that time, only two NL pennant winners have ma...

Is Dodgers’ World Series title cheapened by unique 2020 season?

ARLINGTON, Texas — There was only one World Series championship available to win in 2020. But how does the Dodgers’ win after the most unique – and shortest – season in Major League Baseball history stand up to the 115 World Series winners that came before? “I think if you can pull back stuff from summer camp to that date you mentioned I think my answer is still the same,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “(If there was) a championship to be had, we wanted it. All that has encompassed all of u...

Cristian Pavon scores twice, but Galaxy’s slide continues in Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. — Cristian Pavon scored twice for the Galaxy, but Jaroslaw Niezgoda scored a pair of first-half goals and the Portland Timbers clinched a spot in the MLS playoffs with a 5-2 victory over L.A. on Wednesday night. The Galaxy (5-11-3, 18 points) has lost eight of their past nine games and is sitting in last place in the Western Conference. It is the fourth straight season the Timbers (10-5-5, 35 points) have made the postseason. The Timbers were coming off a 1-1 draw with Cascadia Cu...

Alexander: Maybe the way the Dodgers won was poetic justice

Maybe this is how it had to happen. Maybe, after all of those years of pitching changes that didn’t work, home runs that crushed dreams and endless ammunition for second-guessers, the Dodgers would finally win a championship because of the other manager’s unforced error. Those who follow the Tampa Bay Rays, whether they actually attend games in St. Petersburg or not, will be arguing and bemoaning and hashing over this moment for a good long time to come: Rays manager Kevin Cash coming to the mou...

Dodgers bonded closer together during bubble life at Globe Life Field

Fourteen members of the Dodgers’ 2018 World Series team participated in the World Series this year, so familiarity among players and coaches ran high long before anyone reported to spring training in February, or summer camp in July. Still, the 60-game regular season did not allow Manager Dave Roberts as much time as usual to get to learn his new players’ capabilities – or for the players to get to know each other in a socially distanced world. Game 6 of the World Series was the Dodgers’ 18th po...

Galaxy’s push for MLS playoffs is running out of time

There is always a chance the Galaxy can make the playoffs, but even those odds seem to be dwindling at rapid pace. Including Wednesday night’s meeting at Providence Park against the Portland Timbers (7 p.m., ESPN), there are four games remaining in the regular season for the Galaxy (5-10-3, 18 points).
