Flooding might triple in the mountains of Asia due to global warming

A Sino-Swiss research team has revealed the dramatic increase in flood risk that could occur across Earth's icy Third Pole in response to ongoing climate change. Focusing on the threat from new lakes forming in front of rapidly retreating glaciers, a team (UNIGE) demonstrated that the related flood risk to communities and their infrastructure could almost triple. Important new hotspots of risk will emerge, including within politically sensitive transboundary regions of the Himalaya and Pamir.

Photos of tanks and armored vehicles in the Himalayas show that China and India's next border showdown could be much deadlier

An Indian tourist rides on a horse back at the Pangong Lake high up in Ladakh region of India, June 17, 2016. AP Photo/Manish Swarup India and China have both invested in their armored forces since the 1962 war on their disputed border in the Himalayas. The armor that both sides fielded during another recent period of heightened tension on that border show that a future war could be more destructive. See more stories on Insider's business page. Faces Without Joy: The Fate of Children — Darien Gap, the March to America

Darien Gap, Panama I write these words beside the Pan Am highway. The highway system stretches from Tierra del Fuego to Alaska. In other words, with my American passport, I can walk to this highway, take a right, to Alaska. But if I take a left, I will quickly reach the end of the road. The end of the road starts the Darien Gap. 60 miles of wild jungle. Mountains. Floods. Mud like peanut butter. Only the best boots can get you through that without sucking right off your feet. Easier is to...

Himalaya Overview, African Population History, Iceland Volcano

From past couple of weeks:1) This is a fine synthesis of geological, geophysical, seismic and geodetic data of the growing Himalaya mountains. The review examines the interplay and feedbacks between seismic cycles and tectonic deformation. Earthquakes result in rock deformation and faulting. Tectonic structures developed this way over million of years, in turn, influence stress accumulation and the extent and location of earthquakes.Building the Himalaya from tectonic to earthquake scales.2) Ho...

Readings: Chamoli Debris Flow Disaster, Uttarakhand

The Himalaya are geologically and ecologically fragile. Despite this, the Indian government has repeatedly ignored advice from its scientists and has gone ahead with major infrastructure projects, which have not been assessed rigorously for the inevitable impact they will have on the surrounding environment, people and livelihoods. The February 7 2021 Chamoli debris flow that destroyed two dams and killed scores of people with hundreds still missing is the latest example of how the natural tenden...

Landscapes: In The Shadow Of A Giant

Even regular visitors to the Himalaya occasionally come across a sight that makes them stop in their tracks and gape. A few years ago in the Goriganga valley, a couple of days walk north of Munsiyari, Uttarakhand,  I turned a corner along a village path and paused in wonderment. Photo credit. Travel through a lens: Cat Vinton's best photograph – Sonam braves winter on Changtang Plateau

Our new series of travel photos that tell a story starts with a nomadic young girl who herds animals on the high-altitude Tibetan plateau We rattled over the rugged peaks of a wild, remote landscape of the high Himalaya – in a truck open to the biting wind. After a few long days crossing this frozen land, we reached a small Tibetan camp of yak-haired tents wedged in between jagged peaks. One side India, the other side Tibet (or the Tibet Autonomous Region, as the Chinese call it).The first morni...

Himalaya Herbals: Win the Fight

For years, the beauty industry (especially in Indonesia) treated acne as something controversial, but there’s nothing controversial about acne. They’re only natural. However, a research conducted by Himalaya found that 77% of Indonesians have been bullied for their acne, or as we call it: acne shaming. We realized that acne is more than a skin problem, it leads to a mental health problem. So, we decided to be the first beauty brand who took a stand against acne shaming and cre...

Tracking the Himalayan history from the evolution of hundreds of frogs, lizards and snakes

We examined two hypotheses about the uplift of the Himalaya based on biotic assembly through time of the herpetofauna. Our analyses support a recently proposed stepwise geological model of Himalayan uplift beginning in the Paleocene, with a subsequent rapid increase of uplifting during the Miocene, finally giving rise to the intensification of the modern South Asia Monsoon. These series of geological and climatic events have left significant signal on the evolution of herpetofauna.

How rain can move mountains

Scientists have long thought that rainfall has a dramatic effect on the evolution of mountainous landscapes, but the reasons for how and why have been elusive. This seemingly logical concept has never been quantitatively demonstrated until now, thanks to a new technique that captures precisely how even the mightiest of mountain ranges -- the Himalaya -- bends to the will of raindrops.

Himalaya: Critical Wedge

A while ago a friend commented that she had learned in school geography class that Himalayan faults are the youngest. Now, earthquakes in Bhuj, Gujarat, and Latur,Maharashtra, in recent times tell us that there is active faulting going on elsewhere in India too. But I could understand what she was trying to say, that the Himalaya is a growing mountain chain with active faulting. I think a lot of non-geology folks appreciate this point. What is not that well known is that within the Himalaya the...

Bill Noble's Spirit of Place Paints a Grand yet Personal Portrait

Spirit of Place is the ideal book for any plant lover or even, the serious plantsperson.  While 2020 is turning out to be, at the very least, a rather stressful year for nearly everybody on our planet, at least it does seem to be offering us some very good escape mechanisms - mainly, gardening books. The most recent one to end up on my nightstand is "Spirit of Place' by Bill Noble (Timber Press, 2020). While Timber Press wrote and asked me if I would review this book, I should say t...

Himalaya Earthquake Article

Bibek Bhattacharya has written a fine article in liveMint about Himalaya earthquake risk. He describes the geological story fairly accurately and also properly focuses on our woeful preparedness in terms of citizen awareness and in constructing earthquake resilient buildings.Seismologist Roger Bilham too has been talking and writing about this topic from time to time. He has been quoted in Mr. Bhattacharya's article. There was also an interview with him published in the July 19th edition of Time...

It’s time to marvel at the vocal stylings of Virat Kohli (and also Rishabh Pant) in this amazing/awful pimple cream ad

It’s hard not to feel that the role of ‘ambassador’ has been somewhat devalued in recent years by the marketing industry. It used to be a high-ranking diplomat. But now… “I am very excited to be a part of Team Himalaya and be the ambassador for their Men’s Face Wash range,” said Virat Kohli about his involvement in this quite magnificent ad alongside Rishabh Pant. When we wrote about what it’s like to be Virat Kohli a couple of years back, we highlighted how Indian notions...

'Hurt and angry', India leader warns China over border clash

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Friday that his country was "hurt and angry" after a border clash with China that left 20 troops dead, and warned that the army has been given free reign to respond to any new violence. India and China have blamed each other for the high altitude clash on their contested Himalaya frontier on Monday which also left Chinese casualties after brutal fights with nail studded batons, rocks and rods covered in barbed wire. Modi called a rare meeting with oppo...

"When you find your passion, figure out a way to do that." 1091 has debuted an official trailer for an indie documentary called Beyond Skiing Everest, another adventure sports doc about the challenges of the outdoors and life itself. Tencent Music bets on China’s crowded podcasting space

Listeners of podcasts, audiobooks and other audio shows are estimated to number 542 million in China this year, according to a third-party survey by marketing firm iiMedia. It’s a healthy jump from the 489 million users recorded in 2019, and it no doubt has attracted new players to the game. That includes Tencent Music Entertainment (TME), the Tencent spin-off that is sometimes regarded as the Spotify of China but differs on many fronts in practice. The group’s main line of businesses goes beyon...
