Help with Master Flee Versions

E.T.A. Hoffmann's last book, so far as I can tell, was Master Flea. The first version was written in 1820, and contained satirical criticisms (based on a character named Karrpanti) on the German authorities for their actions after the Napoleonic wars. In order to avoid threats of imprisonment he withdrew this material from the published version of Master Flea.. This edited version is available in Project Gutenberg and the MobileRead library. I would very much like to produce the full original v...

Why are women more religious than men? Because men are more willing to take risks.

Sociologists have long observed a gap between the religiosity of men and women.A recent study used data from several national surveys to compare religiosity, risk-taking preferences and demographic information among more than 20,000 American adolescents. The results suggest that risk-taking preferences might partly explain the gender differences in religiosity. None In virtually all countries in the world, women tend to be more religious than men. In the U.S., recent surveys show a sizeable 12-po...

Another Public Domain question

I have just started work on Hoffmann's Strange Stories, having taken the text from the Internet Archive. The book was published by Burnham Brothers of Boston in 1855, but the translator is not named. Would this book be accepted as being in the Public Domain, and eligible to be added to the MR library?

More help with French, please

I have nearly finished The Elementary Spirit by E.T.A. Hoffmann for the MobileRead library, but need help with a short conversation in French. One man says: Monsieur, pretez moi un peu, s'il vous plait, votre canif. And the other, the villain, replies: Oui, Monsieur, d'abord le violà, je vous le rendrai. Can anyone translate this to English for me? I need help with what they are implying as much as the literal translation, especially with the literal translation. They seem to be close to figh...

E.T.A Hoffmann (1776-1822) was a Prussian artist, author, caricaturist, composer, lawyer, musical director, and musician. Ghoul – Season 1 – review

Director: Patrick Graham First aired: 2018 Contains spoilers This is an Indian mini-series, made for Netflix and combines a dystopian future with the supernatural and – if we are going to be honest – a large dollop of the Thing (1982) and does so with a massive amount of style. The horror (and gore) building through the three episodes until it crescendos. First thing, of course, is I am going to have to tackle the fact that it is based on a version of the Arabian Ghoul before someone comments a...

Film Review: ‘The Nutcracker and the Four Realms’

Conceived just a smidge over two centuries ago, E.T.A. Hoffmann’s 1816 short story “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” has been told and retold so many times over the years — as a ballet by Tchaikovsky, as a novel by Dumas, as a Christmas cartoon by Barbie — that we can reasonably conclude there’s no […]
