Will the End of Moore's Law Halt AI Progress?

johnnyb (Slashdot reader #4,816) writes: Kurzweil's conception of "The Singularity" has been at the forefront of the media conception of artificial intelligence for many years now. But how close is that to reality? Will AI's be able to design ever-more-powerful AIs? Eric Holloway suggests that the power of AI has been fueled by Moore's law more than AI technology itself, and therefore hitting Moore's Wall will bring AI expansion to a fast halt. Holloway calls that halt "peak AI...the point whe...

UFC 233 at Honda Center canceled after another failed SoCal swipe at Bellator

Stop me if you’ve heard this one. The UFC walks into a bar, sees Bellator MMA sitting with a bunch of its fighters and hollers to the bartender, “A round of what they’re having for all of our fighters.” Pardon the pause from the bartender, as they’ve seen this before: All the drinks are made, but no one shows up. Welcome to another MMA SoCal showdown. This time, it’s UFC 233 vs. Bellator 214. Is this town big enough for two events in the same night? Nope. UFC 233, scheduled for Jan. 26 at Honda ...

Max Holloway retains featherweight title via 4th round TKO vs. Brian Ortega

Max Holloway was yanked from his last two fights because of concerns regarding his health. On Saturday, though, the only concerns were about Brian Ortega, who suffered a frightful beating at the hands of the increasingly dominant UFC featherweight champion. Holloway battered Ortega in their featherweight title fight at Scotiabank Arena with right hands throughout and the fight was stopped with Ortega’s left eye swollen shut and blood pouring down his face from his nose and mouth.

UFC 231: Holloway TKOs Ortega, Shevchenko dominates Jedrzejczyk

Max Holloway put to bed any speculation that there is anything wrong with his health, putting an absolute beatdown on Brian Ortega on Saturday night at UFC 231 to retain his featherweight crown. A doctor stepped in to stop the fight, telling a bloodied and clearly exhausted Ortega not to come out for the fifth and final round at Scotiabank Arena. Plain English in Brooklyn Heights: A Very Proper Elizabeth Roberts Townhouse Remodel

If Brooklyn townhouses could speak this one would have a detectable British accent. The structure’s local claim to fame is two-fold: its intensive renovation was done entirely in character with its first half of the 19th century Greek Revival/Italianate heritage, a job tackled by Brooklyn It Firm Elizabeth Roberts Architecture & Design. And the kitchen is the very first that Plain English installed in this country (the longstanding Remodelista favorite recently established a Manhattan showroom)....

The Porn Star's Guide To Oral Sex-Proof Lipstick

Between the hairlessness, the perpetually horny pizza delivery guys, and the white leather couches (why are they always white?), porn has given us many unrealistic expectations when it comes to what sex really looks like. But one untruth we just can't get over is when an adult film actress performs oral sex for an extended period of time, and then when she's done, she appears with her lipstick not even slightly faded or smudged.Like, come on, guys. It's a cliché that even the performers themselv...

Slaves - including children - make the bricks for Cambodia's housing bubble

Two bedroom apartments in Phnom Penh start at $260,000 -- equivalent to 2,000 years' worth of average annual wages for Cambodia's workers. But the bricks being used to construct housing in Cambodia's capital are made by people for whom apartments are even more out-of-reach than the average worker: these "blood bricks" are made by indentured slaves (including children), mostly small farmers who got into debt when climate change wrecked their crops and took on consolidation loans in exchange ...

The Future Of 1.4 Million Floridians With Felony Convictions Is On The Ballot In November

Made possible by O RLANDO, Florida — Desmond Meade doesn’t want to talk about Florida Governor Rick Scott. Nor does he want to talk about partisan politics or racial sentencing disparities. Most of all, he doesn’t want to talk about himself. That might seem odd for the head of a group devoted to restoring the franchise to 1.4 million Floridians with felony convictions , whose voting rights are automatically stripped under a Scott administration policy. But that’s the Florida R...

Brian Ortega, with Rener Gracie in his corner, embraces opportunity at UFC 226

Few have the opportunity. And even fewer have embraced it as Brian Ortega has. A yearlong commitment, courtesy of his father and his unsuspecting mother, at the cost of $130 a month, might have saved Ortega’s life. When life presents you nothing but chaos, and your only outlet is the tough parts of San Pedro, sometimes your only resource is fighting. Only Ortega was doing it as a kid on the streets and at school, not in the Octagon for the UFC. And without Rener Gracie and his Gracie Academy, Or...

Bergevin’s Record With Overseas Talent

Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin got a head start at free agency by inking two Czech defensemen this week. Both David Sklenicka, 21, and Michal Moravcik, 23, signed deals with the Habs after impressive showings at the 2018 IIHF World Championship. As teammates with Plzen HC in the Czech Extraliga, both are left-handed shots, which bodes well for the Canadiens’ depth chart. That’s one of the weakest positions in the organization. Nevertheless, it’s important for Habs fans to tempe...
