(4) TESTERS WANTED: Honma TR20 Driver

Let’s start with a statement so obvious it’s almost not worth mentioning. The only thing better than bombing a drive…is bombing a drive several yards farther. In fact, it’s probably safe to assert that there isn’t a golfer on the planet who would turn down a bit more ball speed by simply switching drivers. I know, “you can’t buy a game.” Blah, blah, blah. But, you can buy better technology…right?! In our Most Wanted testing, Honma’s TR20 driver finished 4th overall and produced the 4th highest a...

Honma and Justin Rose Call it Quits

In January 2019, Honma announced a multi-year equipment agreement with Justin Rose, though, in the month preceding the announcement, the agreement itself was the worst kept secret in golf. Now, a little over a year later, we’re largely in the same situation. Friday’s announcement formally spells out what everyone saw coming roughly two-and-a-half months ago. Justin Rose and Honma were, to borrow a line from Taylor Swift, “never, ever, ever getting back together…” Mountains or Molehills? Behi...

Honma, North America and the Quest To Figure It All Out

Can Honma figure out North America? At every PGA Show, MyGolfSpy asks the same question: Which Japanese equipment companies are still trying to figure out North America? This year, for the first time, we weren’t sure if Honma should still be on the list. Yonex, Epon, Fujimoto, ONOFF, Fourteen, PRGR and others have tried. It’s possible but it takes commitment and cash. Srixon, Mizuno and Bridgestone have done it. Even Miura has its own premium forged niche under the 8AM corporate umbrella. For ye...

Justin Rose puts TaylorMade, other clubs in play. Endorsement deal with Honma likely over

At last week's Honda Classic, Justin Rose, who signed an endorsement deal with Honma at the start of last year to play a minimum of 10 clubs, showed up at PGA National with a TaylorMade SIM driver. This week at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, however, Rose left little doubt that his time with Honma is all but certain to be over as he is playing a TaylorMade TP5 ball, 10.5-degree TaylorMade SIM driver, 15-degree TaylorMade SIM Max fairway wood, Cobra Speedzone Pro 17.5-degree 5-wood; his old...

Honma Announces New Mobile Fitting Van Program

Honma has said it’s getting serious about North America. Apparently, it’s serious about getting serious. Exhibit A was Honma’s Demo Day booth at the PGA Show, most certainly outsized for the company’s relatively small North American market share.  The highlight was the new TR20 line of irons and metal woods, the first product line produced by Honma’s new North American product development team. Yep, Honma wants to grow, but experience tells us growth and comfort do not coexist. Product alone won...

First Look: Honma T//World 747 Rose Proto MB Irons

When it comes to new blades making a statement at the Masters, I’d say TaylorMade – with an assist from one Eldrick Tont Woods – won the day with its new P7TW irons. The Twitterati has been making a chrome forged spectacle of itself over Tiger’s new sticks ever since Sunday’s final tap-in. Yep, Tiger’s new blades are sexy as hell and clearly the girl everyone wants to dance with. Arguably, Honma couldn’t have picked a worse time to officially launch its new blades, the T//World 747 Rose Proto MB...

The clubs Justin Rose used to win the Farmers Insurance Open

Justin Rose didn't take long to give Honma a little something for their endorsement dollars. Less than two weeks after Rose signed a lucrative, multiyear pact with the Japanese equipment maker, the World No. 1 responded with a convincing victory at the Farmers Insurance Open, solidifying his hold on the top spot on the World Ranking, and, perhaps more importantly, quickly putting to rest any potential talk that he might have made a mistake by walking away from TaylorMade after two decades w...

Honma Signs World #2 Justin Rose to Multi-Year Club Deal

The annual worst kept secret in golf is out of the bag. Honma has announced that it has signed Justin Rose to a multi-year partnership. Details, including Rose’s bag makeup, haven’t been disclosed, and it’s possible he’ll be given time to transition from his current TaylorMade setup. Golf.com’s Jonathan Wall reports that the deal specifies at least 10 Honma clubs in the bag. Within those constraints, it’s same to assume irons will be part of the package. JDM brands aren’t known for producing w...

Know Your Japanese Brands – Mizuno Golf

It all started with a single baseball. Past editions of Know Your Japanese Brands Stories have featured Japanese companies trying to figure out North America – particularly in the face of increased competition from the American brands who’ve invaded the Japanese market. This story is a little bit different. It should go without saying that Mizuno doesn’t fit the strict definition of a JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) brand. Once the #1 Iron Brand on the PGA Tour, Mizuno now qualifies as a chal...

2018 PGA Show Recap – Cause for optimism at last?

It took a bit longer this year to put virtual pen to paper. We’re a solid week plus removed from the end of the 2018 PGA Show, and while it’s a few days later than usual, tradition dictates that I take some time to share my thoughts on the good, bad, and stupid of this year’s show. The Big Picture As far as traffic, busiest show in last few years. Demo day was strong, and show floor experienced volume well into Thursday afternoon. On Friday the place was pretty much a ghost town, and by noon m...

In Japan, Trump to try to put human face on North Korean menace

By JONATHAN LEMIRE and JILL COLVIN, Associated Press TOKYO — After easing into his Asian debut with golf and a taste of home, President Donald Trump is trying to put a human face on North Korea’s menace, hearing from anguished families of Japanese citizens snatched by Pyongyang’s agents. Trump’s meeting Monday promises to elevate these heart-wrenching tales of loss to the international stage as he hopes to pressure North Korea to end its provocative behavior toward American allies in the region....
